Those In The Aimed Forces HIGH MILITARY OFFICIALS HONOR LYLE Diedrich Brunsen has received a a Honor" for his son Sgt Lyle Brunsen who was killed in India from' Arnold General Army Commanding General Army Air FORMS He has also received a card expressing sympathy from General Marshall and a memorial certificate from President Roosevelt Very comforting to Mr Brunsen are the two personal letters one from Richard Carmichael Colonel Air Corps (Commanding and Norman A Nelson Group Chaplain This paragraph is in Colonel letter: the time Lyle was with this organization he had always proven himself a good soldier and a gentleman Many of his fellow officers and enlisted men remarked of his pleasing personality and how much they enjoyed his sincerety and sense of Chaplain Nelson gives the details of the funeral which was held in India and with Lyle were three other members of his crew Twenty-four soldiers acted as pall-bearers six for each soldier Two men acted as honorary escort who lead the processsion the little cemetary followed by their Chaplain then the flag dropped caissons A firing squad stood near Death resulted from an airplane accident May 23rd 1944 THE SENTINEL'S PBICE-RATION April 20 you must retain tire inspection certificates for presentation when you apply for gas or tires In the future The two months old twin daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Anderson passed away Sunday night Brief services conducted Iby Rev Peter Friesen were held at the grave Tuesday Burial was in the Andrew Cemetery Mr Anderson is in the army and at present is overseas NIMBLE FINGER The Nimble Finger Club met at the home of Laura Weber on June 28 with all members present and three visitors A musical program was given by the daughters of the club members to entertain the mothers and members of the club After the business meeting the time was spent socially A delicious lunch was served by the hostess and her (helpers The next meeting will be with Mrs Clara Zumpfe The Nimble Finger Club met with Clara Zumpfe on July 12th with 3 members absent and 2 visitors A very enjoyable tirile was spent visiting Red Cross sewing was taken home by each member to work on and bring completed to the next meeting A picnic was planned for Aug 13th at the park The next meeting iwill be with Freida Bruntz on August 30th FIRE AT KLEINHOLZ SERVICE STATION SUNDAY An overheated unit in a Coca (Cola cooling box stated a fire in the Kleinholz service station Sunday evening As the station was not open it is fortunate that some noticed the smoke before much damage was done The gas from the machine made it almost impossible to enter the building NEED ROOM AND BOARD FOR ISupt Hayek informs The Sentinel that the school may lose some teachers because it is difficult to find rooms and board here He wishes to learn the names ol those who can arrange their homes to care for the teachers Same who have not been renting rooms may (have to do so to relieve the situation Call Mr Hayek NEXT FILM COMEDY ON DOMESTIC When (Room arrives the first of the week at the Vogue Theatre those in the audience without domestic help may want to congratulate themselves over that fact After witnessing some of the wild oarryings-on by Paulette God dard and Fred MlacMurray no sane person would dare to have this combination in the house very long For Paulette and Fred cast as a cook and butler respectively de'l was completed yesterday whereby Bertram sold the hotel in Geneva to Mrs Benson of Imperial A residence in Lincoln was taken by Mr Bertram in the transaction Possession is to be given July 15 Mr and Mrs Bertram have operated Dan's hotel here more than twenty years The hotel formerly known as the Jameson has been greatly improved and kept up to date and has been a favorite stopping place for travelers The past several months the Bertrams son-in-law and daughter Mr and Mrs Reuben Herzog have assisted in the operation of the hotel Mrs Florence Bertram has been a valuable (assistant several years While their future plans are indefinite the (Bertrams and Herzogs will probably reside in Lincoln for a time when they get possession of the residence Aug-gust 15 Caroline Jacobson was born in (Rosen Sweden on Oct 24 1851 and passed away at the Warren Memorial Hospital of Friend Nebraska on July 10 1944 at the age of 92 years 8 months and 17 days In her early youth she was baptized and united with the Lutheran church In 1871 ahe was united in marriage to Karl Johnson To this union were bam 10 children of which 3 died in infancy Those living are A Johnson Friend Oscar of Beaver Crossing Mrs Alfred Swanson Friend Olgert Johnson Peoria 111 Mrs Fred Oglesby Benson Minn Mrs Frank Spencer Lewiston Idaho and Carl Johnson whereabouts unknown In the spring of 1888 the family came from Sweden to Friend where they have resided since Her husband (preceded her in death in 1923 After living a numbered years in her own home in Friend She (went to make her home on the farm with her daughter (Mrs Alfred Swanson In Febr 2 1930 ahe united with the First Congregational church of Friend Nebr where she held her membership until her death She also leaves to mourn 21 grandchildren 29 great grand children and 3 great great grand dhilc'fen and a great host of neighbors and friends The funeral was held in the First Congregational church Thursday afternoon with Rev Friesen officiating The singers were Mrs Lester Cogswell and Mrs Harry Volz Burial was in the Andrew cemetery Funeral Home was in charge JAMES BEGGS James Andrew Lee son of Andrew Lee Begtgs and Mary Ann Gregory Beggs was bom in Madoe Canada February 6th 1867 In 1871 he came with his parents to (Friend where they lived on a homestead lft mile east and lft miles south When he was about 14 years old they moved into Friend and his father became the first Methodist preacher and organized the first class (here around April 1871 On May 17th 1893 he was married to Kate Alina Green and immediately-moved to a farm south of Friend To this union seven children were bom and one daugh ter Ester May Kubes preceded her father in death In 1910 he with his family moved to the Dorchester community where he continued to farm until he retired in 1927 when he moved (back to Friend where he lived until (his death on July 14th 1944 He was 77 years 5 months and 6 days old He Is survived Iby one daughter and five sons: lArlo Lee of Dorchester Ray Meridith of Crete Bertha Elizabeth McReynolds of Dorchester Herbert Sydney of North Long Beach Calif Alvin LeeRoy of South Gate Oalif Kenneth Clair of Mt Rainer Maryland Two half sisters and one (half brother also survive him: Mrs Mina Slaughter of Lincoln Grace Beggs of Boston Mass George Beggs of Boston Mass He had 16 grandchildren and one great grandchild His wife (Kate passed away April 5th 1938 The funeral was held in the Methodist church Sunday afternoon iwith Rev Pengelly officiating Mrs Grlbble ol Omaha was soloist with Miss Esther Blanchard at the organ At Colorado Springs the past year he is nofw being sent to school at Columbia university and reported there last Wednesday morning Signal LT BILL BECKER FAILS TO (Ogallala News) Now it's Bill Becker who is missing Lieut William Becker Rev and Mrs William Becker Ogallala received a telegram Friday saying their son had been missing since June 26 following a bombing mission over Austria Lieutenant Becker navigator bombardier on a (Liberator and squadron leader is the second son of the Rev Beckers to (be missing after bombing missions S-Sgt Robert Becker has been a prisoner in Germany for nearly a year after the bombing of toe Ploesti oilfields in Rumania Lieutenant Becker enlisted in toe air corps in April 1942 He visited here during the Christmas holidays after completing several months of anti-sulbmarien duty in the Oaribean area A few weeks before the report of his missing Lieutenant Becker wrote (his parents of fierce battles with German fighter planes as toe Liberator returned from German bombing missions (Rev Becker said he was somewhat prepared' for the news and could only hope now that their son is a (prisoner Rev Becker writes The Sentinel that their son Robert writes them from toe prisoner camp in Germany The last letter being dated March 11th A letter dated December 11th and a post card dated December 19th arrived in April Sgt Opal I Grandorff daughter of Mr and Mrs John Grandorff Friend Nebr has reported for duty at toe Carlsbad Army Air Field Carlsbad New Mexico Before coming to the Carlsbad base she had been stationed at Pyote Texas Cpl Richard Engel writes: a line to inform you that Lt Stanley Soutowick Is hack in iQamp Rucker Ala and also is assigned to our Field Artillery Battalion He arrived here Just recently from Fort Bragg Conrad Eurich and wife who are transferring from Camp Van Dorn Miss to Camp Beale Calif visited his parents Mr' and Mrs John Eurich and other relatives here leaving Sunday They (were accompanied by Mrs Virgil Burkhart who will visit her husband at Fort Ord Calif iCpl (Bernard Simith of Camp Gruber Okla has been home visiting his parents Mr and Mrs Edward Smith and helping with the farm work Dad Smith reports that Bernard makes him work too hard RICHARD ENGEL IN HOSPITAL July 14 1944 Dear Art: I think it could happen to me but they have placed me in the hospital for a week of special treatment then an operation for the removal of a pilonidal Cyst It appears that the next two months of my army life will be spent here as a Convalescence period It was rather unfortunate for me to become ill at this time because on July 19 several of us A VERY INTERESTING LETTER FROM REV WM BECKER Under separate cover I am sending you a copy of the Keith County News our weekly paper On the front page you will see picture Last (Friday evening July 7th we received the news from the War Department that he is missing in action June 26th over Austria This makes the second one and I sincerely hope land pray that he is safe somewhere in Germany or Austria It will just be another long wait yet not without hope We have been holding our breath as it were for some time because he has been in the thick of it for so long Me wus navigator not only of htls ship but his squadron The fore part of June they were in a rest camp in Italy for a week That means that he must have been up quite high in the number of missions completed We had word from Robert about May 29 a letter he had written March 11th Thought some of the many friends would be interested to know about the boys 1 a an enclosing a check for two dollars kindly send me the Sentinel for a time I forget what the subscription rate is now It will bring it to us for a while Every once in a while some of the friends of Friend send us a copy and its like hearing from home We are well working right on through Am kept busy as I also have a supply pastorate at Keystone Nebr in a Presbyterian Church about 17 miles from here north i like it Sunday afternoons and hi ve a good entered toe service from a position as deputy county treasurer of Auglaize County Ohio He has had 14 years experience in choir and choral music Pft James McDonough first tenor of Reading Mass who is the youngest meihber of the quartet was drafted before completing high school He has since received his di- ploma in absentia Pfc Paul Price bass of Oalcago 111 was drafted at toe completion of his second year of study at Woodrow Wilson Junior College Cpl Travis Millins baritone of Cullendale Arkanses has had 5 years experience in choral music He hopes to return to the Henderson State Teachers College where he was studying prior to (his induction The group will furnish a program of sacred solos duets and quartet numbers As a special feature Chaplain Anderson will render an instrumental number on the Hammond Solovox.
