-Twenty years ago needles on forest giants in mountains east of Los Angeles began turning yellow Many trees have silnee died and hundreds of thousands are dying The trees rising more than 100 feet tall some more than 700 years old were Ponderosa pines among the largest in the woods Seeds from their six-inch cones feed squirrels chipmunks grouse and quail The lumber builds houses Ponderosa needles 5 to 10 inches long and lasting up to seven years on a health tree began mottling at the tip Then the entire needle turned yellow-brown and fell off after one season Roots deteriorated as resin flow through the trunk diminished The trees fell easy prey to bark beetles and other pests Foresters at first were baffled They called the problem disease and blamed it on some insect Eventually however they tabbed the villain: smog The agent that withers the needles is a smog ingredient called ozone Created In Atmosphere It Is created chemically in the atmosphere due to the action of sunlight on auto exhaust the last uncontrolled major source of smog In Los Angeles Among other characteristics Is the ability to crack rubber used in tires and windshield wipers For the Ponderosa ozone Is a near death sentence Unlike most other pines they have small resistance to It "We are says Hatch Graham resources officer for the US Forest Service have no control over the cause The only cure Is correction of the smog problem" Prevailing winds carry smog from Los Angeles 60 miles west Into the 60000 acres of Ponderosa In the San Bernardino and San Jacinto Mountains whose peaks jut nearly two miles high Today experts estimate that 75 per cent about 17 million trees are dying Mexican Hits Actions Of San Diego Police SAN DIEGO (AP) An attorney for the Callente Racetrack In Tijuana
