SURPRISE PACKAGES i''Roosevelt charged the network 'as "factually dishonest" and "distinctly biased" when It presented a series of "man in the street" Interviews and indicated only one out of six would vote for him. The facts are that the NBC remote crew taped 12 interviews and 50 per cent of the interviewees said they were Roosevelt supporters. This Is true despite the fact some of the Interviews were taped outside Roosevelts district. CASEY SIIAWI1AN, the NBC press chief in Los Angeles, yesterday talked with Davidson Taylor, NBC vice president in charge of special events and public affairs in New York. (Just think that one ones-a minute. NBC didnt go "out of its way to sing Roosevelt" Bow handsome a. gesture!) THAT WAS practically all Taylor had to say on the situation, and I am sure this Is a correct interpretation because.

I read 'it back to Shawhan so there would be no misunderstanding. Any schoolboy can tell you this is nn "explanation' at alL It is an evasive tactic to skirt the main attack and retreat In an orderly manner. The Issue in the case is simple NBC has a license to operate in the public interest and the responsibility to be impartial and objective in -its news and public events programs. TIIE NETWORK has been accused by a -leading political figure with presenting a broadcast that gave a "completely erroneous Impression and was distinctly biased in favor of my opposition." NBC GAVE the Impression on a nationwide broadcast that it was presenting an unbiased poll representing the opinion of voters in Roosevelt's congressional district. Instead it rigged the results in such a way ti.at the GOP Candidate looked like a shoo-in.

These are grave charges against NBC, and the network and all its vice presidents owe it to the people to get that cavalier head out of the clouds and start talking straight and honest No matter how much you doubletalk the facts, they exist NBC IS IN an extremely delicate position and it -is a matter for the Federal Communications Commission unless a satisfactory and honest explanation is given. IF SOMEBODY in the East made a mistake, the thing to do is come into the open and admit it Whats the matter with saying: "OK. we made an error of judgment and were going to correct the situation as soon as possible." BUT HOW can that NBC vice president have the audacity to concede an "unbiased poll was misrepresented to a damaging degree but claim the program "was in Roosevelts I 57 45 710 740 719 920 Itt 107U 1111 W5 1235 1210 ill dee to i WWMe MB BVgfWg fw IHVw Stow is set (feet af ike paper.) Brawn (9 J5) nr "TAYLOR FEELS that because had a four-minute inter-w with Elmer Peterson, the time actually was balanced in Roosevelts favor. After all, it is impossible to balance Interviews by time, by the second or minute. Hos it in Roosevelts favor to balance Barometer" so that only IS t-S per cent of the people interviewed favored him when the true figure is SO per centfj "TAYLOR SAYS that they did 12 people-in-the-street inter-views. Three of them were done near Hollywood and Vine and the ether nine in Jimmy's district. "He would have preferred that they all were recorded in Roosevelt's district, and if Taylor had known any were made in Hollywood he would not have used them." (Not even if they were anti-Roosevelt ft "THE TROUBLE probably rests in the fact that some of the recorded interviews were lost in transmission and some were not od.

That is, they were not of quality." (Lets see now. NBC received at least six interviews in the East of broadcast quality" That leaves, at the very outside, six lost in transmission. We know, on sound authority, that at least SO per cent of the interviews favored Roosevelt, so of the missing six interviews at least five must have been pro-Roosevelt. (Tsk, tsk. What a Ci'xl.
