creamery and canning What helping factory almg the coming season? GoVKftNWB Thayeb is pushing a plan for sending a carload of provisions to the starving peasants in Russia The president has nominated Stephen Elkins to be secretary of war and the nomination has been confirmed At the Missouri river convention the democrats and alliance men were in a big majority and yet everbody was the old flag and an more than any republican gathering ever held x' Kansas is in hard lines The loss of Ingalls could be borne He was a good advertisement for the state but a poor friend The acquisition of PefTer and his whiskers could be borne because Kansas had Plumb left But now Plumb is gone and she has nothingMeJt In congress but the memories of passed glories The beet sugar convention at Lincoln last week was a success A large number of delegations were in attend-anceand many Interesting facts were brought out about the business A permanent organization was- effected with ex-Lieiitenant Governor Melkle-john -as president and a secretary each from Lincoln and Omaha Considerable speculation in being indulged? In as to whgm Governor Humphrey will appoint senator to fill unexnired term name has been suggested but nobody really believes the governor will be so forgetful as to remember him Ex-Congressman Morrill is considered to have a good show for the place if he will accept it Henry Watterson editor of the Louisville (Ky) Courier-Journal the great free trade apostle and Grover Cleveland boomer got funny the other day and wrote an article on tin plate beginning with this sentence: was a busy day in Hades Charon had known nothing like it since the year 2809 when the last of the American pensioners were gathered Slurs of that kind are the only arguments the democrats have left on the McKinley bill The Missouri river convention it Kansas City agreed to ask congress for the annual appropriation of $5000000 for the Missouri If the government would appropriate a few of these millions for a railroad running over practically the same route a line of travdl could be haTi that would not fillup with sandbar and cut out a new route every year from which high salaried government officials would have a job pulling snags And $5000000 per annum is a goodly sum to sink in such a treacherous stream as the Missouri Speaker Crisp has written Roger Mills asking if Mills will taae second place on the ways and means committee and Mills has written a sharp notehack saying that if he be chairman he go on that committee at all The Kansas City Star has up to this ime with nearly all the Cleveland papers Insisted that the election of Crisp was not a slap at Cleveland but that paper is forced to admit now that last act isan open insult to the stuffed prophet and that Crisp's election may have been antagonistic to the same individual The Cleveland men are making an awful howl about Speaker break at Mills The death of Senator Plumb is a calamity to the state of Kansas the country at large and to the republican party He was a man who had the courage of his convictions and the backbone to do what he thought was best for his state his country and bis party He was a plin unassuming man who led other men simply because the othmr men oqjaceded his ability to lead them If he made mistakes they were generally in the direction of conservatism He was a powerful man in the senate and among the western senators ranked with possibly above him in the respect shown by that body for whatever opinions he presented Kansas will not get another such a senator in a day One of the fruitful themes for the consideration of the next session of the legislature is the banking law It is just as sensible to make the auditor the head of the banking department as It would be set him to raising beets for the experimental station There is enough business in the office proper to keep him busy The constitution should be amended to permit of the election of a comptroller of banks He would need one or two clerks An additional examiner or is needed $nd examinations should in at to iYbimrs QnnuooN A REASONABLE SUGGESTION We do not hear anything from the alliance prase about acts of the state board ot transportation any more In the month of September the secretaries of the board made a report against reducing local rates of freight Many newspapers had been howling long and loud for a redaction of rates but they have had very little to say the time the "report was published or since as the argument therein pronontod We wonder how many editors of those papers ever read this report It is the meet interesting review of the railroad question that was ever published In the state and could be read with profit by every man in Nebraska We should like to see this matter taken up by the papers and discussed while there is no political campaign going on Now is the time for a full and free discussion and there is no subject that can be more profitably discussed daring this winter than the question of railroad rates in this state The report of the board of transportation will make an excellent starting point Discuss it fairly and intelligently as the great importance of the subject deserves and the whole state cannot help being benefited Seward Reporter There is -only one way to get the railroads out of politics in this state and that is by conceding to them and their property the same fair treatment that lsgranted the individual diner the constitution If thepeople continue to threaten the roads by running men for the legislature whose only recommendation is their unreasonable anti-railroad sentiments they may expect the roads to look out for their own interests and protect themselves by hook or crook The railroads have been corrupt in the past and have been greedy and overbearing in politics but they have been constantly threatened and bulldozed and intimidated by legislatures A11 the disposition of the anti-railroad sentiment to be unfair is some excuse for the unfair methods of the roads read up on the rate question and if the board ot commissioners have done justice stand by them WASHINGTON LETT ZB An Interesting Budget of Gossip from Tbs Special Correspondent Washington Dec 18 1891 The president sent the nominations of the following United States circuit court judges to the senate this week: For the first judicial district Judge Putnam of Maine who is a democrat for the second district Judge Ship-man of Connecticut who for a place in the cabinet at the beginning of the present administration At the same time Warren Truit of Oregon was nominated tor United States district judge of Alaska Secretary Blaine had the pleasure this week of adding another plank to the good ship which is to carry American products and manufactures to the uttermost parts of the earth by announcing the treatyof commercial reciprocity between the United States and all the British West Indies and British Guiana and on January 1 next -the president will Issue a proclamation officially announcing the details The countries affected will be Jamaica Barbadoes the Leeward islands and Trinidad Among the important reductions conceded by the British is 50 per cent in the dutv on flour The trade between the United States and the countries named has been about $30000000 a year Senator bill providing for an appropriation of $500000 or so much thereof as may be needed to furnish the G- A men who attend the national encampment here next year with rations tents and all camp equipage used by an artuy in active service seepis to have struck a popular chord as most people agree with Senator Pettigrew that next encampment will be in a great measure a national and that men ought to be made to feel that they are the The senator adds: coming encampment is one of more than ordinary Interest and from my point of view the government owes this entertainment to the old There is little doubt that this senate bill will be passed by the but its fate in the democratic house cannot at this time be easily foretold At a meeting of the American Shipping and Industrial league held here this week Gen Russell A Alger was elected president Ambrose Snow of New York first vice president Merritt of Florida second vice president George A Kelly of Pennsylvania third vice president Clarkson ot Iowa fourth vice president Whitmore of Maine fifth vice dent Charles Hill of New national secretary A 'Smith of New York assistant national secretary The meeting adopted a memorial to congress praying for the passage of the tonnage bill which was presented and urged In the last congress by Representatives Amos Cummings and Jo York Senator Proctor has proven by the introduction of several bills for the improvement of the army that the cabinet is a tip-top school to graduate senators from Speaker Crisp has announced as members of the house committee on rules of which he is chairman Messrs McMillin and Catch ings democrats and Reed and Burrows republicans He has not offered the chairmanship of the committee on ways and means to Mr Mills but has it is said made Shis mind to give it to Mr Springer holiday adjournment is slated for the 23rd instant also the announcement ot the other house committees Commend
