BOSTON POST, MONDAY. APRIL 7 0)02 Captain Collins Developing: a Team of Heavy Hitters i In Ihp Boston marUot was of fialns almost oxcUislvOv and In all v.ays It waa best and the nicst wwk for six mottths. rit-t 12 most active stocks advanced an uverajife almost 7 points a snin that would be evan in a boom period. The CN'tfw York market showed sreat strength all the week and toward the close was very active and nlthou-ph there WH.s a slight recesivon Saturday it believed to have been mtly a tctnporary pnui-w in the upward swing. taken as a are more favot-able to an advance in price.n thev have before tliis year.

Crop report.s from the West are very encouraging which leads to expectation of big bu-Inpss by the Western milroads and consequently this class of has the New York mnrkot the past week. Money the tight period at tlie end of the quarter nrd expected to remain fairly easy' unless there should be some unexpected upsetting of affairs. Add to these the facts that the pu-blic, which has been nibbling rather cautiously at the gilded biiit for two or three has recently begun to buy in good ea.rnest. that pools are bidding up some and that there arc some big Western railroad deals and it will be seen that the bulls have some reasotn to be hopefuil. I Contra.sted with the strength of the roads has been the of the coalers, due, probably, to a fear that there may be a strike at the end of the truce.

tamings for the quarter are expected tq show at the rate of 8 per cent per annum, for the stoclc and if it is true, aa claimed by experts, that the electrical equipment will result in a paving of 2 per cent, the stock aeems likely to go higher. Meiropolitan nnd Brooklyn 'Rapid Transit, hoover, are not doing quite as well as cxpecded and were it not for the fact that larger holdings so coneewtrated they' would be likely to go off sharply. In the local market the advances in the Dominion securities was the most noteworthy feature of the week. Coal gained 171-2 to 140 and Steel 16 to 62. No figuring on generally known facts can justify such prices for stocks whose are still only In prospect, but 3 tllans want them and seem willing to nay almost any price.

It is to a some extent an exemplification of the opera- i tlon of the law' of supply and demand for the stocks, with the question of intrinsic merit as a side Issue. Next to the 33omlnlon securities the advance of about 10 points In Copper icange Consolidated w-as noteworthy. The buying of this stock was of the very best character, especially during the last two days. The copper situation seems to he clearing up a little and it 1s about time it did. for enormous home consumption and unprecedented export demand do not harmonize with the present nominal price of copper fixed by Amalgamatcd in Its effort to crush opposition.

Some of the best posted and most conservativ.i men in the business look for a sharp rise very soon in the price of In Boston there were no losses of importance. The gains were: Dominion Coal 17 1-2. Dominion Iron and Stoel 16 Calumet Hecla 10. American Tcle- rhore 10, Copper Range Consolld tied 91-2. Western Telephone 4, Osceola and Massachusetts Eilectrlc common .3 ear-h, York.

AUGUSTA. April Collins Is plea.sed with the progress the Boston Americans have made in the two weeks they have been here training. The men are already in shape to play reasonably fast baseball tinder proper weather conditions, and by the time they leave here at the end of the week should be pretty well on edge. Collins for week has been alternating practice with a full game of ball each dav. He ha.s here player.s, eight of wliom are pitchers, without other accepted qualifications.

There are be.sides two outfielders. Hickman and Dougherty. who can into the box If occasion Of the Young, Dlneen and Winters are sure to hold their jobs, but at the present time it is impossible to determine who of the remaining live men will make the team. It is probable that all likely men will be held until about the first of when it is expected that the quota of the team will be reduced to at nnost players. With Hickman and Dougherty showing up stronglv at the bat.

It dltflcult to see why Gleason is retained, for In ca.se of accident to an Infielder Hickman ran come into the diamond. Gleason be- tViQ Vf)w Vnrk State Leacue. Prentiss, too, is In that that he must make good or seek some league not In the of Minor Leagues if he wdshes to play baseball. Captain Collins is very anxious to enroll a good lefthander on his of pitchers, and therefore either VMlliams or Delnlnger has a good chance to make a place on the team. A great deal depends upon their succes.s in controlling the ball.

Deinlngcr at present has the as Williams has a sore arm, a bad sign for a lefthander. Young, and several of the youngsters are already In very fair shape. the bat Criger and Warner are fast getting into form. LaChance 's showing the wisdom of the managenient. His ability to handle a thrown ball, high or low, and his throwing talent strengthens the infield.

Stahl Is placing the ball with that abandon that has always characterized his hitting. Hickman is pounding the ball in a manner that will keep outfielders on the run, and so- is Freeman. Dougherty, the new man. is hitting the ball In a style that makes him a fixture on the payroll. The Boston Americana should have more batters than have ever been known in Boston.

It was announced at Harvard yesterday that Frantz, star athlete and big first had on his own written confession been declared ineligible for the Crimson te.am thl.s year because of profe.ssionallsm. Frantz ha.s not pracflscd wTlh the team this year, but the general impression was that he was behind in his studies and w'as postponing his baseball work until he could secure a firmer footing. The announcement y'esterday, therefore, came w'lth a great shock to all supporters of the team. difficulty is that he played baseball for money three weeks en a summer ba.seball team in Kansas. During the time he was so engaged his expenses, he says, exceeded what he received from the baseball management.

In the letter of the rule, how'ever, the big athlete Us ineligible to represent Harvard, and the authorities have decided to disbar him from all athletics for the space of one year. After that he will again be permitted to take up his work. The suspension of Frantz, coming suddenly end unexpectedly as it did, has cast a cloud of gloom over entire Harvard, for, with the loss of her big flr.st baae- man, the Crimson college sees many of her fond hopes vanish. Up to yesterday every Harvard man firmly believed that Larsreat New Twin Screw Passenger Steamers from Boston to Ltrerpool, via Queenstown, 60o ft. long.

April in and out of Congress are much interested In stories from Iowa that Speaker Henderson may be defeated for renom- Inatlon to Congress this fall, and that if he succeeds In becoming the candidate of his party again he may be defeated by a Democrat. Investigation of these stories shows that Speaker Is much beset by political foes, and these are by no means confined to the Democratic party.

Opposition to him has been steadily growing, and now his own county, Black Hawk, has put forward another candidate for the nomination in the person of State Senator O. B. Courtrlght of Waterloo. Speaker Henderson Is being denounced on all sides by sterling Republicans who for vears have been delighted to honor The feeling grown so bitter that even should the Speaker be nated it Is doubtful if a majority of the voters of the district would vote for him The rea.son for this change of sentiment in a famous Republican Is that Henderson has got out of line with his partv at home. He Is no longer considered representative of the sentiment of his district.

Thompson and II. H. Pease. Frantz would surely he upon the diamond this year. The etory of his suspension is as statement being that given out to the public by the Harvard athletic committee) "In the summer of Frantz for three weeks om a team from Winfield, a short distance from the towm in w'hich he lives.

For this playing he received his board and a sum of money, amounting to about the latter sum to cover his expenses. The fact that more than the sum received was spent by Frantz for expenses during the three weeks relieves him from any intent of professional playing, but because of the temporary Infraction of the the committee has decided to penalize Frantz to the extent of one year of his four eligibility years. "It Is only just to Frantz to say that before any question of his amateur status had been raised by the athletic committee he had written a letter to the chairman of that committee stating the facts of the case." Frantz feels badly about the matter, yet his action in coming to ihe has made him the hecQ ot the university. Everyone regrets that h9 cannot play this year, but everyone. at the same time, praises him for being so considerate of the fair name or the university.

Profes.sor Hollis gave out the following letter, wffilch he first received from Frantz regarding the affair: "My Dear recent general axlvertlsement of Rule 5 of the regulations on athletic sports at Harvard has called my attention to my own connection with baseball during the summer of 1895. During that season I played about ten games on the infield, Kan.sas, nine, and received enough money to cover my expenses. Including I do not think there was one cent above my expenses, but rather less, from my connection with the nine. the time, by the strict wording tof the rules against professionalism. I appear to be Ineligible to a Harvard team, and I therefore from the baseball nine until the athletic committee can make an investigation to confirm me in my decision, or to clear me from any susplclon of violating the Is the statement of tpy case, as nearly i can remember It.
