Phone 69 When you toss two fighters like Max Baer and Joe Louis into the same ring almost anything can happen This is the sort of scrap that may be decided by the very first punch That first punch means a lot Tunney you will recall really won the title with the first right hander he let go at Dempsey in Philadelphia When the bell rang for the first round Gene slipped out of his corner and caught the un suspecting Dempsey flush on the chin Jack never fully recovered in that bout Jf Tunney had been a real knocker out like Baer or Louis he most likely would have flattened Dempsey in that first round While Baer and Louis are noted for their terrific punches they have contrasting styles Madcap Max probably is the harder punch er it Louis is the more accurate Max winds up and lets go with everything he has Joe is delibera tion itself Like Gene Tunney Joe does hot believe in wasting a move He lets a lot more punefies than handsome Gene was inclined to shoot but at the same time he generally is certain to find his mark Always shuffling in bobbing and weaving he has both hands cocked and ready to go He is one of the busiest big fellows the ring game has seen One's Tough ast Both Baer and Louis can be hit though Joe is lots tougher to catch with a clean punch A moving tar get always is Baer is wide open and a good boxer like Louis ought to have little trouble getting to him But Max is tough and stands up well under a stiff punch Of course it is doubtful if he has ever been tagged by a fighter with the heavy artillery Louis packs Max has always prided himself on his cast iron chin Away back in 1931 in his first New York appear ance Max warmed up for Tommy Loughrun by bouncing his chin off the steam pipes He lost the deci sion to Tommy but it is safe to ven ture that the punchless Loughran did not hit him half as hard as some of those self inflicted knocks Max took in the dressing room It likely that Max will be foolish enough to stick his chin out and give Louis a free shot at it as he has done on many occasions just to register his disdain for the other punch Louis has not faced a man with a lethal punch such as Max swings The bomber has yet to demonstrate that he can take a real blow and keep going Louis inishes Early There' is still another question concerning Louis that remains to be answered It is his ability to "go the route? in the event that neither he nor Max succeeds in chalking up a knockout The im pending bout is listed for 15 rounds Louis has never had to travel that distance The only time he was asked to was when he squared off against Primo Camera but he needed only six frames to finish ou IN Kiri I of In Ledon eature 5 mm anti 1 Mrs Ruth Katherine isner their homes in spending a few days and friends nere SSlXr ktNO SM boy Coach Paul Tubb Dothan high school football men tor observed Tuesday after he had watched his 40 odd proteges work ing out in Wiregrass stadium for the toughest schedule the Tigers have ever faced Slowly Tubb and Maston O'Neil assistant coach are welding a foot ball squad from remnants of last year's outfit and newcomers Only about four leuermen are uava school this year and th? coaches are hard put to finish off the team on fine points Work Horses 1 Richmond lowers and Levi Thrower have been showing up well the past few scrimmages Tubb said and this pair probably will bear the brunt of the burden In ball carrying and passing this season Wilmer Boozer brother to Young Boozer of the 'Crimson Tide has shown great punting ability lately and Tubb probably will assign him the reg ular JOD far the team has suffered no injuries Experience and speed will the principal essentials lacking this season Tubb believes The line will hardly average t60 pounds and the backfield even less Moreover the backfield Is not particularly fast Joe Brown Jr a junior out for his first time hns been showing up well lately and is likely to find a berth at end Brown is particularly good at defense but his
