LEXINGTON HERALD-LEADER LEXINGTON KY MONDAY MARCH 3 1986 B5 Tonight on -TV ESPN From 700 College Basketball: Metro Atlantic College Basketball: Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament Sports Center College Basketball: Arizona at UCLA WGN Dempsey A Makepeace Creates! American Hera News INN News WKRP in Cincinnati Trapper John MD Movie: The Strange Vengeance of Kosake (until JOO) HBO Movie: The In-lews Movie: A renege to Indie Movie: The New Kitk (until 2:30) SHO Robin Hood: The Pretender Sunday in the Park With George Movie: Herd to Hold Tears for Fears MAX Movie: Roadhouse 66 Movie: Muling in Action 2: The Beginning Who'll Stop the Itei nf Al Jarreau appearing at London's Wembley Arena Detailed listings movie descriptions and daytime programming for these and Sunday Television offerings really prime tonight KET pushing for more state backing other cable channels are in TV Spotlight every The incident was a positive one because it gave us an opportunity to show the public that we'd do anything to demonstrate our editorial integrity and maintain our credibility How does KET figure Into the dally fives of Kentuckians? It is like the University of Kentucky or like their public library ar if they have them their local Symphonies It is an educational and cultural resource which they may or may not use all the time or even very often Not many people will visit the state archives but the state would be infinitely poorer if ft there when people needed it The same is true of KET with one veiy significant difference the only institution devoted to education and cultural enrichment that is accessible just by walking to your TV and flipping the switch It's an exceptional night of programming for television viewers- There are so many good shows scheduled that if you watch one show you'll end up missing something just as good NBC and ABC are still trying to crack CBS' lock on Monday prime-time television Tonight they have a couple of new made-for-TV movies the KET campaign to raise money so It can stay on the air continues tonight with a couple of show stoppers London's Wembley Arena is the setting for Jarreau: Live In Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist Jarreau performs some of his best known hits before a capacity crowd They include in This Love Together" "Let's Pretend" "Raging Waters" Five" "Boogie Down" and Garden" (KET-46 8 pm) If that isn't enough the eagerly awaited "Great Performances" presentation of In Concert" the New York concert of Stephen Sondheim's landmark musical Follies airs tonight An unusual blend of concert and rehearsal performances the star-studded event includes the New York Philharmonic playing the first complete performance of a full Broadway score The cast includes Carol Burnett Liz Callaway Betty Com-den Barbara Cook Adolph Green Andre Gregory George Hearn Howard McGillin Uliane Montevecchi Phyllis Newman Mandy Patinkin Daisy Prince Lee Remick Arthur Rubin Elaine Stritch and Jim Walton as well as opera's Ucia Al- banese and Erie Mills Follies tells the story of two former showgirls and their husbands who meet at a reunion on the stage of a soon-to-be-demolished theater where all had spent many of their happiest years The show focuses on the contrast between what they perceive as the sincere love noble ambitions and pure motives of their youth and the disappointment frustration and bitterness of their present middle age (KET-46 9 pm) Special tonight A teen-age runaway seeking excitement and a sense of belonging becomes part of a highly organized band of young drug dealers while his mother braves the dangers of the city to keep her son from being swallowed up forever in The Children of Times Squere a made-for-TV movie starring Howard Rollins Jr Joanna Cassidy and Brandon Douglas (ABC-36 9 pm) At the same time on NBC Andy Griffith stars in Diary of a Perfect Murder another made-for-TV movie He and Lori Lethin play a father-daughter team of lawyers who are hired to defend a famous TV journalist who is accused of murdering his wife (NBC-1 8 9 pm) SI programs that have a positive influence educationally or culturally whether or not they are commercially viable If were ever (ticked up by some other media where moat people could get it we'd (bop it If ever readied the point where the longer reflective pieces were left out we'd drop it because it would just be another network newscast In a lot of areas public television stations go head-tohead with commercial stations but not our mission The further you get from education the more these things become peripheral Qr A few years back you were talking about eapaming public affairs programming but Bttle mention at that in your current proposals tor the future We still want to do more in that area but in the last two or three years we've become recommitted to our erinretinnel tntarinn fkir micrinn to tn understand what the needs at the state are and to respond to those needs And right now the biggest need of the state is education you walk a fine fine when dealing with the legislature and some of your piMc affairs programs? Pm thinking In particular of the flap over Diana Taylor Osborne whs was helping with your legislative coverage while writing a political opinion column for the Frankfort State Journal drawing the criticism of some legislators who claimed it was a conflict at Interest It has always been a delicate thing tor a station like ours to have credibility in public affairs (In the Diana Taylor Osborne incident) they jumped on us in precisely our area of greatest sensitivity It brought up accusations and charges that we had screened telephone calls and selected fawned reporters for all of it untrue by the way So two weeks ago we took that show out of the hands of our staff and asked Bob Hensley (WTVQ-TV anchorman) if he would be willing to produce the show He selects the reporters all the decisions are his And now nobody can imply that because the KET staff members on the show work for the state they have to do this or be sensitive to that i 1 jT w- 4 i1 i i ftfVTiY? From Page B3 television stations and cable chtmefa uch as the production that appeared on the Piddle Broadcasting Service and Showtime? One view is that all right that how we get it (good programming) out there is less important than that we get it out bed about it is that Showtime or whoever is involved may not have the same priorities Maybe Finn" really what Playhouse" thought It needed but what interested Showtime Does that mean that what you produce must have commercial viability? Our mission is not just to get audiences it's to find and produce Special shows to air on KET KET will fill the next two weeks with special programs to promote its annual fund-raising event Here is a list of some of the top events: the Wildlife" focuses on the plight of more than a dozen endangered species around the world and the efforts of dedicated people to save them (8 pm Thursday)' Theatre Fifteen will fill two hours with highlights from past productions and interviews with the more popular stars Part of it was filmed at a Mack-tie gala in Boston Watch for Robin Ellis Susan Hampshire Urn Pi-gott Smith and Susan Wooldridge (9 pm March 9) Queen and Her Ceremonial provides a lode at the British royal horses and the people who care for them with scenes of Queen Elizabeth exercising her horses on the grounds of Buckingham Palace (8 pm March 10) Creatures Great and Small is a twohour film based on the popular series by the same name It tells what happened to James Helen Tristan and Siegfried after World War II (9 pm March P) children 3tt to 6 Information: 231-558a "Shape 6 SkMta: Running" 7 pm Wednesday Lexington Clinic-East Free Sponsored by the Fitness A Sports Medicine Center-Lexington Clinic Information: 255-6841 Ext 4410 lor Children 7 to 9 pm Tuesday Midway College Mans Library Midway Rediscovering books tor young people For children and adults Book: The Clank!
