Announcement was made yesterday that there would be a baseball game next Sunday afternoon between the Marquettes and the Van Dycks. The park is in better condition now than ever before, but a little more work will be done before the game is called, in order to make the diamond the best in Alaska. This week, the teams are practicing up for the match, and with fair weather, the fans are promised a good exhibition next Sunday.

Weishauer, Jerome Desio, C. H. LaBoyteaux. After an absence of five years, i i a Schnabel, a deputy marshal here under Marshal Perry, returned to Fairbanks last evening. He made the trip from the coast to Fairbanks with the herd of cattle which were driven over the trail from Chitina.

After leaving Fairbanks, Mr. Schnabel was appointed deputy marshal at Wrangell, under Marshal Faulkner, of the First division, and served in that capacity until the term of the latter expired four months ago. He is an oldtimer in the North, having stampeded to Dawson in the early days, and to Fairbanks in 1904. To save their propex-ty from sale by the city for delinquent taxes, many people whose names are on the list published in the Times are paying- their indebtedness to the town. Every day sees large number of people at the city hall, and the present indications are that the number of lots sold will be small. Several offers have been made "by private individuals to pay the whole amount of money due the town, provided deeds could be given for the property, but as the law provides that each must be sold at public auction, and separately, the council SHUSANA, for Settles, passed Tanana at 8 o'clock yesterday morning. In an address before the a a Bankers' association, O. P- Austin, former chief of the United States bureau of statistics, explained with an impressive array of figures the effects upon foreign and domestic trade that are to be expected from the opening of the Panama canal.

It was shown that the canal will shorten the steamship mileage from Baltimore to Manila about 500 miles, to Hongkong about 750 miles, to Shanghai about 2,000, to Yokohama about 3,000 to Melbourne nearly 3,500, and to Wellington more than 4,000 miles. It will place Baltimore nearer to these ports than is London. As to the western coast of South America, Mr. Austin showed that the gain is very much greater and ranges from 3,000 to 6,000 miles gained, the distance from Baltimore to the most important of the west coast cities of South and Central America being cut in half, or even WHITEHORSE, upbound, left Dawson at 11 p. m.
