TUESDAY, JULY 6, Six Drown In State MARION At least six persons two of them in the Pee Dee have drowned in South Carolina during the long July 4th holiday period. A Marion County man was reported to have drowned in the Great Pee Dee River Sunday while fishing. Marion ty Coroner L. Drew identified the victim as James E. Roberts, 36, of the Jordanville community in Marion County.

According to the coroner, Roberts was riding in a boat driven by Paul Richardson of Rt. 3, Conway, when the boat struck a log near Red Bluff at Brittons Neck. He said Roberts apparently was thrown from the boat and drowned. The accident occurred about 2 p.m. The body was recovered in the Red Bluff vicinity about 6 p.m., the coroner said.

Participation in the search were the Marion Rescue Squad, the Conway Rescue Squad and the Marion County Sheriff's Department. Marion Wayne Copeland, 14, of Rt. 5, Sumter, drowned in the Lee- State Park Pond near Bishopville while on a family outing. Clarence Adams, 87, died in a Florence nursing home Monday after a short illness. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Quay Adams and the Rev. Melvin Brown.

Burial, directed by Brown Pennington Atkins, will be in the Mt. Elon Cemetery. Mr. Adams was born in I Darlington County, a son of the late John and Elizabeth Rhodes Adams. He was in the retail grocery business, and engaged in farming until his retirement.

He was a member of Wesley Chapel Methodist Church. Surviving is a son, Troy D. of Lydia; four daughters, Mrs. Floyd Clanton and Miss Hazel Adams, both of Lydia, Mrs. Fred Holland and Mrs.

T. M. Dabney, both of Florence; and several grandchildren. Mrs. Rebecca Brown TIMMONSVILLE Funeral services for Mrs.

Rebecca Goodman Brown will be conducted Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church at Lamar by the Rev. J. Pearson. Burial, directed by Bowman and Howard Funeral Home, will be in Mingel Howard Cemetery.

Mrs. Brown died Thursday in a Florence hospital after a short illness. Surviving are her husband, Perry Brown Jr. of Timmonsville; three sisters, Mrs. Angie Lee Hickson of Olanta, Mrs.

Saddie Harrell and Mrs. Eppsie Stokes, both of Timmonsville; and two brothers, Matthew Goodman of Baltimore, Md. and S. A. Goodman of Timmonsville.

(Continued from Page 1A) Washington Man Killed In Shooting HARTSVILLE A 24-yearold Washington, D. man, formerly of Hartsville, was shot to death here early Monday morning.

Darlington County Coroner Dr. Ned Hobbs identified the victim as James Hodges. He said Hodges was shot in the right side of the chest with a .38 calibre pistol about 1 a. m. Monday, and died instantly.

The coroner said Hodges was shot in a night club after an alledged argument with Albert Lee Lighty of Washington, and formerly of Hartsville. The coroner said Lighty was arrested Monday morning and charged with murder. He has been lodged in the county jail. An inquest into the incident is planned, the coroner said. Assisting in the investigation were Darlington County Chief Investigator Gene Elliott and Chief Deputy Jerry Gardner.

Moslems to Vie KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) Moslems from 19 countries will be invited to Koran reading competition scheduled for Nov. John's Episcopal Church; Wood men of The World; Men's Garden Club; Retired Men's. Club and the BRC of A. He was a retired Atlantic Coast line millrighter. He attended St. John High School and Converse Business College.

Surviving are his wife Mrs. Nannie Carter Ward of Florence; two daughters, Miss Sara Lee Ward of Florence and Mrs. Frances (Wilma). DuPre of Bennettsville; a son Dr. William T.

T. Ward of Clarke Air Base, Phillipines; two sisters, Mrs. Catherine Gasque of Florence and Mrs Vernon Allen of Litchfield: Beach; two brothers, B. A. Ward of Darlington and the Rev.

Woodrow Ward of Newberry; and six. grandchildren. Mrs. Dorothy McArn, 22, of Summerville, killed in a twocar wreck near her hometown. 2 Are Arrested After Fight Here Two Florence men have been arrested in connection with an alleged fight which broke out between them on Ervin Street late Sunday night.

Ross Coogler, 20, of 317 Ervin St. was arrested on a charge of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. He is accussed of cutting James Lee, 40, also of Ervin Street, on the left arm with a knife. Lee was treated lat a local hospital and released. Lee was arrested in connection with the same incident with disorderly conduct.

He is being held in the county jail, pending $250 bond. Coogler has been released under a bond of $500. Warrants for the two were issued by Magistrate W. E. (Babe) McLeod.

They were arrested by Deputy Sheriffs T. J. Poston and Willie L. Brown and Constable Marion Brown. Monday afternoon by the Rev.

Lewis McCormick, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home. Survivors, other than the parents, include a brother, Edward Wallace of the home. and the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest F.

of Mullins. John Gallshaw Funeral services for John Gallshaw of 603 Brunson Florence, will be conducted Wednesday at 4 p. m. in Progress Church of Jesus by. Elder Thurston McCullough.

Burial, directed by the Ideal Funeral Parlor will be in the North View, Cemetery. Mr. Gallshaw died Saturday at his residence after a long ilIness. Mr. Gallshaw was born in Sumter County, a son of Addie and the late Laws Gallshaw.

He was a veteran of World War II. Surviving besides his mother, are a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Jennings of New York, N. a sister, Mrs. Delphine James of Florence; a brother, Laws Gallshaw of Florence; and a grandchild.

and afterwards there was a cookout for all Elk's Lodge members and 207 of Florence participate The ceremony took place at 1:30 p.m. Man Is Hospitalized In Cutting, Robbery A New York man has been hospitalized as a result of a stabbing and cutting wound after he was beaten and robbed by a group of men in the northern section of downtown Florence late Saturday night. Offices Reopen Federal, state, county and city agency offices in Florence County will resume normal hours Tuesday after a long July 4th weekend holiday. Opening Tuesday are the post offices, the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service office, the Pee Dee Experimental Station and the Internal Revenue Service office. Also opening Tuesday are the South Carolina Employment Security Commission office and all city and county offices.

The business and circulation offices of the Morning News will resume normal office hours also. James Matthews, about 40, was listed in satisfactory condition Monday, suffering from a severe cut across the stomach during the Sartuday night incident: Detective Lt. Gene Lessmeister said Matthews was jumped by a group of about four men about 10:30 p. m. in a parking lot near Darlington and Dargan streets.

He said one of the men slashed a knife across Matthews stomach. Matthews was robbed of about $10 in cash and his auto stolen. Florence police later located the auto. A man driving the auto, believed to be owned by Matthews, is being held pending further investigation. His name was not released immediately.
