It wu during his three-year search for an imaginary El Dorado, a second Peru or Mexico with new deposi tones of gold that Hernando De Soto on May 8, 1541, four hun dred years ago this week, happened to discover the Mississippi river. Emerging from tangled swamps, he and his men first uw the "Father of Waters1 in the northern part of the present state of Mississippi. Although other Spaniards may have preceded De Soto to the banks of the river, he is the first white man to have been aware of its discovery. DeSoto wu likewise the first Spanish cavalier to penetrate the interior of North America.

Although there had been previoua attempts to Spanish colonization, it had been con' fined to the coutal area and extended only' a few leagues Into the peninsula of Florida. 1541, one year after DeSoto began his expedition in Fluids and while he wu leading his men through the bayous of the lower Mississippi river, Coronado began his exploration in the Southwest The combined course of these two expeditions nearly spanned the continent from Georgia to the Gulf of California. DeSoto wu bom in, Spain 1500 of a noble but impoverished family. His career as an explorer in the western hemisphere began when he wu only nineteen years old in his service captain in the ruthless conquest by Pedrariu in Mexico. In 1532 he Joined in the conquest of Peru and led the van that captured the Inca Atahualpa.

His interests then turned to North America, DeSotos wealth acquired in Inca booty, his pleasing personality, together with his reputation a conqueror, won him favor' with Charles of Spain who gave him royal grant for conquest In Florida. DeSoto wu also made governor of Cuba which he wu to use a base of his expedition. He arrived in Cuba in May, 1535, where he mustered necessary equipment Setting sail from Havana on May 18, 1539, he landed on the west coast of Florida and began the expedition which covered around 4,000 mites by land, river, and sea and brought him and his followers ihee to face with all the hardships possible in an unexplored wilderness. In directing and managing his company of between 600 and 700 men, DeSoto performed a herculean task. The force at times reached more than 1,000, slaves and Indian camp followers were commandeered along the way.

The company included cavalry well foot soldiers. About 240 horses and a drove of 300 hogs, the latter for emergency food supply, were taken along. Jhe hogs, unlike breeds of today, could travel long dis tances at a rata of ten to fifteen mites a day. In three years, the drove increased from 300 to 700. After penetrating at leut ten of the present southern states, including Florida, Georgia, North and South Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi, DeSoto crossed the Mississippi river in Mississippi somewhere between the mouths of the St Francis and the Arkanau rivers.

This marked the first conscious discovery of the river by white men. From the point where he crossed he sent out a scouting party which spent eight days in the region to the northwest 'The United States De Soto expedition commission in its report publish- ed by the government in- 1939, stated that the party in eight KNIFE CaZ TRUSTEE'S SALE WHEREAS, J.
