II Friday. June 21, 1963 '63 Appalachian League Schedule OUT AT HOME--Big Harvey Chaffin (3), an Oklahoman, sped in from the pitchers mound to cover home plate after a pitch got past the catcher. He got the ball in time to guard home plate and tag- sliding Larry Sellers, Greencastle, Pa. This occurred during a practice game this week in the Kings- T-N Photo by Stephens port Pirates training camp. Both Chaffin and Sellers stand a good chance of remaining with the Pirates here this summer, according to officials.

The squad will be cut this week before the opening game Monday here with Bluefield. Kingsport's Greer Rates High In Knox Drag Races Kingsport's Shirl Greer will be one of the men lo heat when the biggest, drag racing event ever in (his section of the nation gels underway at Knoxville's Tennessee Air National Guard Facilities July 27. The event, the All-Southeastern National Hot Rod Association Drag Meet, will last for two days and will see some $5,000 in money and prizes given away. Nationally prominent drag racing figures from all over the nation will compete in the event which will be run on 10,000 feel of runway at the air strip. The NHRA will direct the meet, making all records set eligible for national consideration.

The top eliminator in dragsters will receive $750, second place will be worth 55(10 and third place will draw $250. The same money will be awarded in the super stock class though the first three places. Money will be awarded in all classes except in the regular street machine class. Trophies will be awarded in all classes. Entries already filed in the dragster class are from Pete Robinson, Atlanta; Ray Goodman, Memphis; and John Reed, Decatur, Ga.

Don Nicholson and Hubert Platt are entered in a pair of 1963 Chevrolets. Gene Hinson and Julian Peele, both of Dunn, N. are entered in Plymouths along with Greer. AND LATER, TEED OFF--Defending U.S. Open champion Jack Nicklaus tees off on number one Thursday opening his title defense in the kingpin of golf tournaments.

"Be it resolved that; "1. The employment of Mr. Bowden Wyatt be extended, with full pay but without duties in the Department of Athletics, to June 30, 1964, at which time his employment shall terminate.

"2. Mr. Robert Woodruff be appointed director of athletics, effective July 1, 1963, at the salary payable monthly at the rate of $16,000 per year. "3. Mr.

James McDonald be appointed head football coach effective July 1, 1963, at a salary payable at the rate of $15,000 per year." The second resolution: "The board of trustees of the University of Tennessee, assembled in annual meeting June 20, 1963, expressed sincere appreciation to coach Bowden Wyatt for his dedicated leadership over the years and extends all best wishes for a speedy recovery." Mets Cheered As They Get Nod Over Yanks NEW YORK (AP) An inspired Mets team, leaving its bag of errors outside the ball park along with a pile of banned signs, mauled the mighty Yankees 6-2 Thursday night in an all New York exhibition baseball game lor the benefit of the sandlots. A bugleless, placardies fire cracker throwing crowd of 50,742, cheering all things Mets and jeering all things Yankee, watched with joy as the world champions wound up splitting a day-night doubleheader with the inept of both major leagues. The Yankees had edged the American League cellar dwelling Washington Senators 5-4 in a regularly scheduled day game before taking on the Mets, last in the National League. The Mets bombed the Yankees twice during the game, in the Jiird inning when they exploded 'or five runs against Stan Wiliams and in the fifth inning when exploded firecrackers on the icld that left a trail of smoke rising skyward. Jay Hook pitched the first five nnings for the Mets, giving up hree hits and a run.

When he left. Manager Casey Stengel, back at the Stadium for the first time since he was fired by the Yankees after the 19GO World Series, took no chances.
