a a a a THE NEW MEXICAN Santa Fe, N.M., Tuesday, March 21, 1989 EL DIARIO TUESDAY March 21, 1989 POLICE NOTES Police: and sheriff's officers are investigating the following reports: Responding to an alarm, police caught a burglar Sunday inside the Flower Market at 1996 Warner St. The suspect was found hiding in a storage closet. The owner reported that only coins from the cash register were missing. Arrested was Ernest Brian Goke, 28, of 1616 Third St. A man driving on East Alameda near Paseo de Peralta on Friday was hit from behind by a man in a large blue Ford truck.

When the victim got out to check the damage to his car, the other man got out of his truck and tried to slash the victim in the face with a knife. The suspect is described as 37-40 years old, 5 feet 2 inches tall, with a dark complexion and a dark mustache. Two girls, ages and 10, and residents of the 2800 block of Cerrillos Road reported Saturday that a neighbor opened the door to his home and exposed his genitals to them. The suspect later said that he had been in the bathroom and was naked when the, phone rang. The girls told police the man had exposed himself before.

A home in the 500 of Plaza Balentine was burglarized Sunday. Taken was a crystal ashtray valued at $130, two bottles of wine, $150 in coins and a cash register drawer valued at $200. A Toyota camper was found by police in the 1900 block of Cerrillos Road Monday morning with its engine still running and a dog inside. The owner later called police to report the camper was stolen. An office in the 800 block of Warner Street was reported ransacked Monday morning.

Nothing was taken. A fight erupted Saturday between two men who had been playing darts at the Desert Inn on Old Santa Fe Trail. One man wants to press charges against the other. A yellow Dodge recreational vehicle was reported stolen Sunday from the 800 block of Fayette Street. Someone took a radar detector valued at $128 from a Chevrolet Camero on Sunday when the car was parked at McDonald's or the High Mesa Inn on Cerrillos Road.

Everisto Joe Gurule was arrested for trying to pass a bad check for $355 at the Sunwest Bank branch on Rodeo Road. Bank employees reported the bank had previously taken worthless checks totaling $3,819 from Gurule. Clothes, credit cards and $250 cash were taken Sunday from a car parked outside the office of Coronado Condominiums at 2800 Cerrillos Road. The cash, stashed in two money bags under the car seat, belonged to the Santa Fe school district. A 1976 Ford pickup was stolen Sunday in an apartment parking lot in the 2700 block of Galisteo Road.

Someone tried to break into a city warehouse at 1121 Alto St. over the weekend. Damage was estimated at $350. Four buildings that house the state Department of Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources were broken into over the weekend. Locks were broken, $20 was taken from a desk and a hinge was taken from a wall.

A woman said her wallet was stolen Friday at the Bull Ring restaurant on Old Santa Fe Trail. Missing are credit cards, a checkbook, a ring valued at $400, a personal check for $2,600 and $120 in cash. Burglars broke into the US West building at 1117 Calle La Resolana over the weekend, taking $15 in coins from a vending machine, kicking in doors and breaking the window of a company van. DON'T MISS Santa Fe Community College is offering a variety of short courses and workshops about the environment. "Natural History of the Arid Lands of New Mexico" will acquaint students with the soils, vegetation, animal communities, geology and the fossil past of New Mexico.

Students will participate in field trips throughout the state. The course will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays beginning March 28. "Hoot for Owls" will explore the world of the forest at night. Students will learn the techniques to call owls and to locate nests and roosts.

This course 1 will be held 7 to 9 p.m. on April 18. "Animal will cover tracking techniques, animal gaits and other clues to animal behavior. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"Natural History of the Arid Lands of COURTS The following people were arraigned Monday in Magistrate Court: Joe Everisto Gurule, 32, of 1783 Hopewell St. or 703 Alarid St.

Joe Henry Romero, 22, of 2800 Cerrillos Road, Apt. 1, was charged with residential burglary and larceny. He is being held in the Santa Fe County jail in lieu of a $15,000 property or $1,500 cash bond. Ernest Brian Coke, 28, of 1616 Third was charged with commercial burglary and criminal damage to property. He is accused of breaking into The Flower Market at 1996 Warner Ave. on Sunday. He is being held in the Santa Fe County jail in lieu of a $5,000 property or $500 cash bond.

Antonio Celestino Urban 20, of 1429 Agua Fria was charged with two counts of aggravated assault a with deadly weapon. He is accused of striking a woman with a hammer. Urban is being held in the Santa Fe County jail in lieu of a $10,000 property or $1,000 cash bond. The following people have been indicted by a Santa Fe Grand Jury: Ruben Cavala, 21, 618 Agua Fria Street on charges of attempting to commit a felony while armed with a deadly weapon. He allegedly tried to rob a woman with a knife July 5, 1988.

Robert Mearant, 24, 475 Camino del Campo on charges of possessing cocaine and marijuana on Dec. 16, 1988. Wilma Romero, 37 and Benjie Tapia, 25, both of 517 Barela Lane, on charges -of shoplifting four video cassette recorders from Walmart Dec. 19, 1988. Edward B.

Ortega, 21, R1. 5 Box 258, on three counts of burglary. He allegedly broke into three pickup trucks on Feb. 5. David Carl Wilson, 30, 2001 Airport Road on charges of bringing vodka into the county jail on Jan.

27. Andrew Gallegos, 45, 1519 Camino Sierra Vista on charges of possessing cocaine and stolen property on Jan. 24. CLARIFICATIONS Only firefighters with local governments are eligible to buy up to 10 years of credited service under the Public Employees Retirement Act for previous federal government employment under a bill approved by the 1989 state Legislature. Ben Lujan, extends the purchase option through June 30, 1992. Funeral notices and memorials GARCIA, Susie 68 A life long resident of Santa Fe, passed away Sunday morning at 'St. Vincent Hospital following a sudden illness.

She was born in Terrero, New Mexico and was the daughter of the late Luis and Rufina Rivera. She was the store manager of the MorValue Stamp Redemption Center and was a bookeeper for her husband's business, Pete's Appliance Service. She was a member of La Union Proctectiva, and the American Association of Retired Persons. Her husband, the late Pete Garcia, preceded her in death in 1973. Visitation was held at Berardinelli Mortuary on Monday where a rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m.

Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. today where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. at the Berardinelli Mortuary. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday morning at 10:30 from St. Francis Cathedral.

Garcia, both of Santa Fe; a brother, Anastacio Rivera of Sun City, a grandson she calde and Nancy and husband Danny Torrez of Grants; three brothers: Tobias, Antonio, and Juan Martinez and wife Francis all of Alcalde; brothers- and sisters-inlaw: Carlotta Martinez of San Juan Pueblo, Carolina Romero of Dixon, Faris Duran and wife Cordelia of Albuquerque and Celestino Duran and wife Priscilla of San Jose, California; eleven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives. Rosary will be held at 7:30 this evening at BlockSalazar Mortuary. Funeral services will be Wednesday from St.

Anne's Church in Alcalde with interment following in the Santa Fe National Cemetary. Block Salazar Mortuary. McGEE, Bette 68 A resident of Santa Fe, passed away Sunday, March 19th at St. Vincent's Hospital. She was born August 2, 1920 at Portland, Indiana, the daughter of Monte W.

and Gladys L. Harter. She was raised and schooled in Douglas, Arizona. Pres McGee and she were married on February 2, 1942 at Gallup, New Mexico. Several months later they moved to Santa Fe where they opened and operated for many years Memorial Chapel and Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Mrs. McGee held a funeral directors license and was active i in the operation of the funeral home and cemetery. She was a member of the Stitch and Bitch Club of Santa Fe, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Santa Fe Zonta Club and active in other civic organizations. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church.

Her husband, Pres McGee preceded her in death in December of 1985. She is survived by her son, Larry McGee of Tucson, Arizona; her daughters: Janet Block and husband Mike of OBITUARIES Susie Garcia Visitation will be held today for Susie R. Garcia, 68, a former store manager and resident of Santa Fe. Mrs. Garcia died of heart failure Sunday at St.

Vincent Hospital. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. at Berardinelli Mortuary, with a rosary recital at 7:30 p.m. A Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St.

Francis Cathedral, followed by burial in 1 Santa Fe National Cemetery. Mrs. Garcia was the manager of the Mor-Value Stamp Redemption day morning following a lengthy illness. He is survived by two sons: Frank Herrera of Albuquerque and Benny D. Herrera of Santa Fe; two step-sons: Randy and Ezequiel Baca of Santa Fe; two step-daughters: Cecilia and Magdalena Baca both of Santa Fe; three brothers: Arthur Herrera, George Herrera and his wife Cecilia, and Steve Herrera and his wife Susan of Santa Fe; two sisters: Anne Gonzales and Diana Herrera all of Santa Fe; five nephews: Gary Thompson, Ricky Thompson Robert Thompson, Steve Herrera and Jamie Gonzales all of Santa Fe; his ex-wife, Lydia Herrera of Santa Fe; many uncles, aunts, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father Roberto Herrera in 1977, his mother Cora Herrera in 1987, and a nephew Ricky Thompson Sr. in 1986. He also leaves behind a very dear family friend, Jane Sandoval and several very dear frineds. Visitation was held at 6:00 p.m. yesterday at the Berardinelli Mortuary Chapel where a rosary was recited at 7:00 p.m.

There will also be a visitation today from 2:00 on until a parish rosary at 7:00 p.m. Berardinelli's. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. from the Cristo Rey Church. Interment will follow in the Rosario Cemetery.

Arrangements are through Berardinelli Mortuary, 983-4331. MARTINEZ, Seferino, 64 Life long resident of Alcalde, passed away Monday at St. Vincent Hospital. He was preceded in death by a son, the late Levi Sandoval on November 5, 1987. Surviving him are his wife, Pelegrina of the home: three sons: Tito, Peter and Lawrence and wife Henrietta all Alcalde; two daughters: Lilian DeVargas of Al- helped raise, Pete Neil Garcia of Santa Fe; and three granddaughters.

Elsewhere Steven Pyle MILWAUKEE Steven J. Pyle, an Associated Press photographer whose assignments took him from papal travels in Latin America to Super Bowls and Olympic Games, has died. He was 45. Pyle, Wisconsin photo editor, died Saturday after surviving more than a month on an artificial heart- Albuquerque, and Meridith Balser and husband George of Virginia Beach, Virginia; 5 grandchildren: Christian McGee, Elizabeth McGee, Brandon Block, Andrea Block and Russ Balser. Sisters-in-law: Frances Crim of Gamiel, Arkansas, Winifred White of Portales, NM, and Ivhon Graham and husband Warren of Stratford, Oklahoma.

Visitation will from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday at McGee Memorial Chapel. Funeral Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Thursday at McGee Memorial Chapel, with Dr.

B.C. Goodwin officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of McGee Memorial Chapel, 1320 Luisa, 983-9151. PHELPS, Grace 85 A resident of Los Alamos, died of cancer on March 19, 1989 at the Los Alamos Medical Center.

She was born Agra, Kansas, taught school in Colorado, and moved to Los Alamos in 1951. She is survived by her husband, Robert Thayer of Los Alamos; her daughter, Susan Hull of Valencia, California; and a sister, Hazel Clarine in California; and a brtoher, Wes Hamilton in Colorado. Berardinelli Mortuary, 983-4331 SIMMS, Ethel Hays, 97 A resident of Santa Fe, passed away Sunday morning, March 19th at her home. She was born March 13, 1892 at Billings, Montana, the daughter of George and Jennie Hays. She trained at the Art Students League in New York, followed by a life long career in Commercial Art and as a Syndicated Newspaper Artist for assist device. He suffered a heart attack Feb. 12 and underwent; multiple bypass surgery.

Pyle, a 16-year AP veteran, headed Wisconsin photo operations for the news cooperative the past 13 years and frequently handled out-ofstate assignments. He covered five trips by popes; the U.S.-Soviet summit in Iceland; political conventions; and the shuttle Challenger disaster. His sports assignments included Super Bowls, World Series, the Kentucky Derby and Olympics at Calgary and LosAngeles. The Associated Press conducted Tuesday evening at 8:00 from Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 12:00 Noon from Our Lady of Sorrows Church with Father Millan Garcia as celebrant.

Interment will follow at the Los Alamos Cemtery, Los Alamitos, NM. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rodgers Mortuary. GRIEGO, Juan 86 A lifelong resident of Tesuque, passed away at his home on Saturday following a lengthly illness. He was the son of the late Secundino and Magdelena Rodriquez Griego and was born June 24, 1902 in Tesuque. Survivors include his wife Teresito Griego of Tesuque; one daughter, Nellie Griego and Alfonso of Tesuque; a son-in-law, Ernest Duran of Tesuque; one brother, Antonio Griego and his wife Rose of Tesuque; a brother-in-law, Uraquio Romero of Tesuque; a step-brother, Manuel Ortega and his wife Mabel of Tesuque; a grandaughter, Eleanor Duran of Tesuque; and many other nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held yesterday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. from the San Isidro Catholic Church in Tesuque where a parish rosary was recited at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today at 10:00 a.m. from the San Isidro Church with interment to follow in the Tesuque Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be: Juan Ortega, Richard Montoya, Federico Griego, Peter Rodriguez, Ruebel Duran and Julian Nieto.

Antonio C. Griego will deliver the eulogy. Arrangements are through Berardinelli Mortuary, 983-4331. HERRERA, Joe Benny, 48 A resident of Santa Fe, passed away at St. Vincent Hospital early Sun- Hearst Publications.

During the 1920's she illustrated the "Flapper Fanny" cartoon series. Originally living in Kansas City, Missouri, she moved to Santa Fe in 1948. During her retirement years she painted numerous portraits of Indians of the Southwest. She was active in the Santa Fe Altrusa Club and served for several years as a volunteer at the old St. Vincent's Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Coy Simms in 1972. Survivors include her two sons: Preston W. Simms and wife Marion of Santa Fe, and William C. Simms and wife Helen of Templeton, California; two daughters: Barbara Simms Spink and husband Bill of Santa Fe, and Dorothy Simms Kath and husband Delbert of Magalia, California; and 7 grandchildren and 2 great grand-children. Cremation has taken place in Santa Fe and a Memorial Service and burial will take place at a later date in Billings, Montana.

Arrangements are under the direction of McGee Memorial Chapel, 1320 Luisa, 983-9151. THANK YOU The family of ADELINA G.
