Mrs. Clark visits in New England Mrs. Walter N. Clark, 2300 Naples avenue, has just returned home following a sixweek visit in the New England states and Washington, D.C. Making the trip by air, this visit marked the first time in 18 years that Mrs.

Clark had vacationed in her native New England. In Portland, Maine, she visited her sister, Mrs. Clayton Ramsay, as well as other relatives in Maine and Maschusetts. St. Matthew film opens at Studio theatre Continental's "The Gospel According To St. Matthew," widely acclaimed as the finest religious film ever made and, according to Life Magazine, "one of the great movies of all time." opens Wednesday at the Studio theatre. 448 W. Base Line, San Bernardino.

The biblical film, produced Alfredo Bini and directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini, faithfully follows the Apostle Matthew's version of the story of Christ. Dedicated to the memory of Pope John XXIII, the Italian film has collected a wide range of film awards from around the globe, including the coveted International Catholic Film Office Award and five awards at the Venice Film Festival. Filmed in widescreen and black and white on location in Sicily, "'The Gospel" is enacted by a cast of non-professionals. Enrique Irazoqui, a Spanish student, was chosen to portray Christ. Margherita Caruso is cast as Mary in her youth, and Susanna Pasolini, the director's mother, plays Mary in later life.

Elmore of lands, veteran California Highway Patrol officer, has been promoted to captain and assigned to the San Francisco Bay Area where he will be responsible for organizing a new CHP office in Oakland.

Elmore, who joined the CHP in 1948, has been serving as executive officer for the highway patrol office in San Bernardino. He will report to the CHP's San Francisco Zone 3 headquarters on October 1, where he will head up organization of the newly authorized Oakland area office, scheduled to be activated in March 1967. The 42-year-old highway patrolman joined the CHP in 1948 after two years with the Long Beach Police Department. He served with the patrol's Comptom office until 1952 when he was promoted to sergeant and transferred to San Bernardino. In 1957, Elmore was promoted to lieutenant and transferred to Altura, returning to San Bernardino several months later.

Since that time, he has been assigned to the San Bernardino office. Elmore currently resides at 960 Cedar avenue in Redlands with his wife, Dorothy, and their two sons, David and Gregory. Another son, Don, is attending Long Beach State College. At the time of his promotion to captain, Elmore was serving his annual Air Force reserve duty as a major with the security and law enforcement division at Norton AFB. AREA NEWS CAROLINE SHEPHERST Miss Shepherst teaching at Crafton Caroline Shepherst, a Oregon resident, is a new grade teacher this year at ton elementary school.

Miss Shepherst is a 1963 uate of Walla Walla College, College Place, Wash. She later took a year of graduate work toward a master's degree there. She attended Portland Union Academy, Portland, Ore. In college, she was a member of Alpha Gimel Ain Girls club and served as vice president of her senior class. She lists piano as her special interest.

The new Crafton teacher lives at 25276 Barton road, Lom a Linda. Owen elected Kiwanis club president Ernest Owen, principal of Clement Junior High school, was elected today to serve as president of the Kiwanis Club of Redlands for the calendar year of 1967. Robert Sherrod, the incumbent president, will continue as head of "noon Kiwanis" until the end of this year. Succeeding Mr. Owen as vicepresident will be James Butler.
