HIGH SCHOOLS C9 Sunday December 10 2000 THE KANSAS CITY STAR RESULTS ALL-METRO FOOTBALL One last look at an eventful season HIGH SCHOOLS The Star's football final top-five polb BIG CLASS RECORD HOW THEY FINISHED Rockhurst 14-0 Missouri 5A state champion 2 Olathe North 12-0 Kansas 6A state champion 3 Blue Springs 10-2 Lost to Rockhurst in 5A quarterfinal 4 Liberty 9-2 Lost to Rockhurst in 5A sectional 5 Olathe South 8-1 Lost to Olathe North in district finale SMALL CLASS RECORD HOW THEY FINISHED 1 Platte County 14-0 Missouri 3A state champion 2 St Pius 12-1 Missouri 2A state champion 3 11-2 Lost to Platte County in 3A semifinal 4 Park Hill 9-4 Lost to Webb City in 4A semifinal 5 Grandview 9-1 Eliminated in district playoffs IVAN CARTER The season began in Oklahoma and ended in St Louis In between these eyes saw a ton of high school football As I prepare to pass the reins as high school columnist over to my man Shandel Richardson (who ironically accuses me of never passing the rock in our Friday morning basketball games) time for a few final observations Unfinished business After all has been said and done one question is still dangling like one of those Florida chads: Who is the best team in the Kansas City area? Some say Olathe North which went 12-0 and won its fourth Kansas 6A state title in five years thers say Rockhurst which went 14-0 and won its first Missouri 5A state title since 1987 To solve this BCS-like dilemma I propose a city championship game in my backyard do it old-school style No coaches No referees No pads use discarded sweatshirts for pylons and a beat-up old football just like we did as kids Seriously the 1 lawklets and Eagles should have hooked up this season Maybe next year coach Severino and coach Wier? that Sproles is the best Olathe North coach Gene Wier once said that Sproles was the school's most heavily recruited player one of the best" said Wier who refuses to compare players "All of them had different styles and each one could do something Perhaps what sets Sproles apart from the rest is his combination of speed and power I Ie runs the 40-yard dash in 44 seconds and bench presses 320 pounds Sproles would dazzle fans with a jaw-dropping move on one play then drag a defender on the next can't prepare for a guy like that" Olathe East coach Jeff Meyers said simulate him in practice so going to get his yards" That Sproles did football days The Olathe youth league wanted him to play in the small weight class Sproies refused He traveled 45 minutes every day and ran wild in the Raytown league that had no weight restrictions The knock against Sproles in high school was durability But he carried the ball at least 200 times the last two seasons and only had one sub 100 yard game I Iis next hurdle is proving that he can make it at Division 1 1 le has already orally committed to Kansas State "I know people are always going to question my size" Sproles said "But I just have to go out and show them Dok at Warrick Dunn Barry Sanders and David Sproles who this season led Olathe North to its fourth Kansas 6A state title in five years leaves as the all-time leader in rushing yards and touchdowns At a school known for producing great running By SHANDEL RICHARDSON The Kansas City Star Olathe North running back Darren Sproles weighed 10 pounds at birth and relatives immediately nicknamed him It should have been more like mini-tank Sinee then Sproles has grown to 5 feet 6 inches and 170 pounds and he blasted through defenses on the football field this season for 2485 yards and 49 touchdowns For that Sproles has become the first repeat selection as The Star's All-Metro football player of the year He also won the award last year thought he was going to be a big said father Larry still call him Tank though never Hey Darren come always Tank" Sproles has been silencing the critics of his size since his youth PEGGY HAIR 71 he Kansas City Star Wayne Simien (center) season By LARRY GRAHAM I Kansas Cily Star Shawnee Mission football program has gone from Sunflower League chumps to Sunflower League champs For that the Indians can thank coach Sam Brown Brown planned to turn around the program last year but SM North struggled to yet another losing season at 3-6 That though was an improvement from the 1-8 mark two years ago This season SM North made that planned dramatic turnaround and Finished 9-2 and as Sunflower League co-champions That is one of the reasons Brown is the recipient of The Star's All-Metro coach of Winslow could recall several times when point out an Opening during a game and Brown would call a play to exploit the defense listens a lot to what we have to say on the field and we listen to what he Winslow said just work together and find the stuff working at the right time That's just the type of guy he thought last year would have been the year we would have turned it but it just Brown said had Olathe North first (this season) and they showed us what we had to do Then we were able to get some One of the reasons SM North excelled this season was the relationship Brown has with his players Leavenworth silences Rockhurst in tournament final year and their home tournament" Rockhurst leading scorer Brian Carson has suffered from foul trouble all season and sat most of the game due to four fouls in the first half He scored all six of the Hawk-lets points during their 6-2 run in the second quarter but fouled out with less than 6 minutes left in the game would have loved to have him in the game more but it's just tough playing against Simien" Rockhurst coach Mark Nusbaum said trying to play against one of the best players in the city and prefer he get some Neither team had much of a chance to establish much dominance in the first half Leavenworth By LARRY GRAHAM The Kansas City Star Leavenworth tried everything to silence the ruckus created by the Rockhurst crowd Turns out all they needed was a big fourth quarter from Wayne Simien Simien scored 11 of Leavenworth's 14 fourth-quarter points in the Pioneers' 59-50 victory over Rockhurst Saturday night in the championship game of the Leavenworth Invitational Simien led all scorers with 27 points and 14 rebounds He punctuated his dominance in the fourth quarter with a two-handed jam from the baseline in the final 30 seconds of play just wanted to put the excla mation point on the said Simien who was one of three Leavenworth players nominated to the all-tournament team was really important for us to get this Both David Albo and Joey Payton were also selected to the all-touma-ment team as well as Tom KomoroskL The Pioneers No 1 in The Star's big-class poll finished third in the tournament last year and are coming off a tough schedule that had them in St Louis Thursday night for the KMOX Shootout before Friday and games was real important for the kids to win Leavenworth coach Larry Hogan said was the one tournament they win last i 1 jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the opening minutes but a series of turnovers in the second quarter allowed the Hawklets to close within 8-7 The Hawklets pulled within two several times but never any closer in the second half Rockhurst No 2 in The big-class poll drops to 4-1 while the Pioneers remain undefeated made a couple of runs and they responded every time the sing of a good Nusbaum said
