Lexington That took a lot of our time and efforts that could have gone into selling local 1-1 Things got so bad financially that WLEX radio wad sold in l868 to raise money to keep the television 1 station on the air The radio station become WBLG really needed financing to keep things Barfield admitted began to look better and the ownership began to have confidence We had competition when Channel 27 with the call letters WKXP began Bob Dunn a newsreader gets ready to broadcast from an early Channel 18 news set Snooky Lanaon was late for our opening A lot of things were different about television then The moat obvious wu that television then was live or on film There was no video tape Commercials and -Barfield admits they were few and far between in those early days were done live If a sponsor bought three commercials a day the set for the commercial had to be erected three times and an announcer had to read the copy three times It made for some hetic moments wanted to do a program about horse racing and explain some of the things that are involved We hired a racing writer from down at the paper to do Barfield told the story show was to follow our news While they were doing the news in another part of the studio they were putting up the backdrop for his show and preparing for the com- mercials 'v- vv' the show he told' me he1 had never seen so much confusion got the show on without any problems didn't we I asked: 4 Yeah but it sure made me nervous' he Live television and the problems it created made a lot of people nervous Barfield and other veterans of the early days of television tell horror stories of sets falling down while the show was on the air announcers forgetting lines even when they had cheat sheets and later cue cards and Snooky Lanson was
