Money Hike Charleston's St Matthew's Church Damaged By Blaze CHARLESTON I) ire struck 125 year old St Matthew's Lutheran Church in downtown Charleston Wednesday night destroying part of the roof and the interior and endangering its 196 foot steeple The steeple the tallest in this old port city was still burning after the flames in the interior were put out said Mrs A James Laughlin Jr wife of the pastor The brick and masonry structure was being re modeled and workmen had spent the day painting the interior she said A city library across the street from the church was evacuated when the fire broke out stained glass windows are Mrs Laughlin said were original just as were the pulpit and Two other church buildings a Sunday school and parish education building were saved Jfa Laughlin said gation Wednesday The measure provides for es tablishment of the district which would be empowered to oper ate a water system to supply residents of the district and others outside the district who purchase the service It pro vides for a five member board of directors to run the agency The area covers some 250 acres in the Oakdale Golf Club area near Ebenezer A petition submitted the sec retary of the governing board of the county with names of at least 10 property owners in the designated area would provide for a referendum on the mat ter An election would be held within 30 days with the district going into operation immediate ly if the vote is favorable The directors would be ap pointed by the governor upon recommendation of the delega tion A meeting of residents of the area would nominate direc tors Directors would serve six years with two of the original ply to the criticism or to alter the methods he has used since he first came to Africa in 1913 He has not adopted modem cost to taxpayers of SC Dealing with a perennial prob lem the governor recommend ed a 3 per cent cost of living pay increase for teachers and other state employes The teachers are asking a 15 per cent
