Well they are still mired in the mud today while to lowly linemen carry around the major share of glory for leading Fordham to a 2-0 victory over Missouri The winning play of yesterday's Sugar Bowl game came with startling suddenness after five minutes and 29 seconds of the first period and most of the throng of 73000 peering through a thick curtain of rain didn't see what happened Even those who did see the play didn't quite understand it the fact that the Ram end got up with the ball in his arms IT POURED That's all the scoring there two little points on a safety For the next 54 minutes and 31 seconds the two teams mud-caked and water-logged struggled up and down the field with neither crossing the other's 19-yard line The heralded backs Harry Ice Red Wade and Bob Steubor of Missouri and Blackie Blumcnstock Steve Filipowicz and Joe Andrejco of Fordham were shackled by the Louisiana gumbo mud To tell the truth it wasn't a fit be allowed to day for man or beast to be playing varsity Sachon Hascall Hcnshaw Johnny Ries and all other past Sun Bowl stars: Make way for Glenn Dobbs lanky 182-pound tailback of the Tulsa Hurricane Maybe you'd better tip your hat to him too You were good in your own right but this boy Dobbs put all of you in the shade (if there was ever any shade in the Sun Bowl games) No player dominated any of the seven Sun Bowl showings as completely as did Dobbs yesterday when after several futile scoring attempts by his team he pitched the Tulsa Hurricane to a 6-0 victory over Dell Morgan's Raiders from Texas Tech and thereby kept alive the jinx which has prevented any Border Conference team from ever winning the New contest here When I say pitched the Hurricane to victory I mean that literally Dobbs standing closer to the line of scrimmage than most passers looked like a big league hurler burning the ball over the plate in everything except the absence of a wind-up Receiver Judd Breaks Loose From Three Tackles HE GAVE the greatest demonstration of pass-throwing ever seen in the Sun Bowl completing 20 out of 30 tosses for a total of 201 yards The wiry Dobbs did other things as well He did some great punting (one kick went for 85 yards) and he sometimes took the ball and ran for sizeable gains But the play that distinguished him as Hero No 1 of all Sun Bowl games was a pass in the final period when it had begun to look like the two teams were going to battle to a scoreless deadlock The Hurricanes were down on their own 40 when Dobbs started rifling those passes hard into the stomachs of his receivers With a succession of completions the Tulsans carried the ball to the Tech 21 Dobbs unlimbered his arm and smack! the ball hit Saxon Judd right end on about the 15 Judd was hit himself by three Tech secondaries Callahan Kenneth Robbins ni Tom Douglass but he broke loose and hot-footed it to the goal line try for the extra point was blocked but Tulsa had the game all tied up in her school colors of black and gold Two minutes 'of play remained and Tech's chances to tie the score or win the game vanished quickly when a Callahan pass was intercepted on the first play after the kickoff Tulsa could have held the ball the remaining length of time but made a fourth down kick into the end zone with something like seven seconds left Keithley Purdin Carry Brunt For Team Against Wind COACH HENRY FRNKA who is touring the Carlsbad Caves with his players today spoke approvingly of play forget he cautioned A Keithly and Cal Purdin were in there bucking the wind and kept us in the ball game" Keithly who subs for Dobbs and Purdin a gifted wingback did carry the offensive load for Tulsa in the face of a fairly brisk wind Dobbs did his playing in the first and third periods when the Tulsans had the breeze to their backs We played a fine team in continued Coach Frnka is a team that compares favorably with any of our opponents during the regular season We were fortunate to beat such a good Coach Dell Morgan had to leave his own players after the game to help take Assistant Coach Berl Huffman to the Southwestern General Hospital Huffman insisted on watching the game from a car parked near the sidelines despite illness which developed into a mild case of pneumonia He was reported in good condition today feel that the game should have ended in a scoreless Morgan said should have succeeded in halting Judd on the scoring pass play Dobbs is a fine passer He's better than any we played against all last Both Scoring Chances Are Annulled EVERAL annulling factors kept Tulsa from scoring earlier in the game and prevented Tech from making good its touchdown opportunities In the first period with Dobbs in the driver's seat the Tulsans marched to 15 They were halted and Dobbs tried a field goal from placement on the 33 Tech bid for a touchdown In the second quarter when Thayne Am-onett raced 23 yards to the 22 They were stopped at that point however and Callahan attempted a field goal from the 27 Both field goal tries were too low and too short Tulsa hit scoring territory twice in the final period before cashing in On the first Bain intercepted a pass- on the Tech 22 and a clipping penalty thwarted the second attempt Incidentally penalties were inflicted freely especially holding infractions Tech had three punts called back by penalties and Tulsa one best chance to score was wasted in the third quartrr when Bing Bingham took a pass from Callahan on the Hurricane 25 but dropped the ball and Tulsa recovered Siuari a Great Tackle Those Speedy Tech Backs line out-played the Tech wall and a big factor in the defensive work was Roy Stuart 178-pound right guard Stuart stopped most of Tech's power plays over the line and he piled up interferers to spoil some of the Raiders wide plays or else made tackles himself Wayne Holt 223-pound tackle and Greene 195-pound tackle were also stars in the Tulsa line best linesman was Bob Duncan left end who trapped and bulldogged Tulsa passers to the ground and' otherwise played a good defensive game The kicking on both sides featured the contest and the performance of Callahan the sophomore back from Wink made his stature as a player grow He kicked to safety from several untenable spots His running and passing were high spots in Tech's offense The Raiders showed the fans several other backs with speed to burn including Don Austin Maxey McKnight Douglass and Rogers Smith NEW YORK Jan In four major bowl games a total of 154 point rolled off the football presses and the most vital game of the day was decided by a safety Not only was it decided by a safety but that was ail the scoring in the game a scant two points Around here of course those two chaste demure points mean just as much as 200 because Fordham won the team remember we have been saying all year that can play in any league including Mr Bernie Big Ten It would not be entirely correct to write today that Fordham chased Missouri out of the state of Louisiana You simply can't draw a shutout victory edge in football any closer than two points unless you want to be technical and go inth forfeits That's a 1-0 result it? Perhaps there will be some less sentimentally Inclined toward Fordham who will say that the Rams from Rose Hill were lucky to get by with a 2-0 win That would be a fair criticism provided you decided to string along solely with the bare statistics But you want to keep in mind that circumstances can do much to regulate the run of a bal game Ford ham's safety came in the first period That was two points for the Rams It wasn't much of cushion but it was more than Missouri had As the game was played it was first and above everything else up to the Rams to make those two points stand up That's a tough job Coach Jim Crowley and his boys were sitting in on the biggest poker game on Bowl Day and their highest card was a two-spot The next toss of any card could beat even a field goal And there did come a point where the cards were reshuffled and Missouri went for the field goal That was in the fourth quarter It missed by four or five yards You can imagine the intensity of emotion which Crowley and his boys experienced as Missouri's right halfback Steuber took his position on the 35 or thereabouts and went for the kick Had the kick and it was a heavy greasy ball due to weather conditions gone over a rather remarkable item would have been written into the records of the New Orleans classic That would have put Missouri out in front by a 3-2 score and very likely that would have been the final score Once before a Sugar Bowl game was decided by this same score This was when Texas Christian beat Louisiana State in 1936 the second year of the series You don't get many 3-2 games in football and unless you have a spiritual intimate interest in the teams you don't care for them either By JACK GUENTHER Press Suff CsrrespsadeaS DURHAM C- Jan Some day and somewhere maybe not for years or within 1000 miles of North Carolina two teams may possibly play a harder faster or more heartstopping game than the Rose Bowl football classic of 1942 but try to tell it to anyone in Durham For as tobacco town slowly settled back to normal today after th most hectic week in all its his tory some 56000 citizens are still busily rubbing their eyes feeling their pulses and remarking to the world in general I've seen and heard everything now so help And maybe they have too They saw a twice beaten team ranked an underdog at 1-3 upset the second highest scoring team in America: they saw all predictions of a strictly defensive battle exploded and they saw a bunch of fighting mad boys prove once again the old theory that a team which won't be beaten just can't be beaten The official score is Oregon State 20 Duke 16 but that doesn't tell how the orphaned champions of the Pacific Coast turned back the Duke eleven which won the Southern Conference title with nine straight triumphs to acclaim as the finest team the Durham campus ever has produced BEAVERS GO TO WORK Oregon took the ball 20 seconds after the kickoff and held it for almost 15 minutes while marching 52 yards for a 7-0 first period lead gained by Bob 15-yard climax romp A dozen minutes later Duke reeled off 70 yards for a score and a conversion of its own to tie matters up at 7-7 With the score knotted at the i start of the second half the orange ersied boys from the Far Northwest went to work again to the complete surprise of the spectators International Newt Service NEW ORLEANS Jan 2 Thej familiar cry of came today from the east and west football camps as final preparations were completed for the transplanted Shriner's charity game tomorrow from both the East and West squads were in the Sugar yesterday and saw Fordham sneak out a 2 to 0 victory over Missouri jfromschooi! NEW YORK Jan Duke saved the Rose Bowl game for this year but the move to Durham may hurt the Pasadena show in the long run Looks like a cinch that the folks in the Carolinas will try to make a State ran into wet weather before leaving the coast but apparently that was just what the Beavers needed so they could handle a slippery ball Can't de cide whether the No 2 surprise was the way defeat of the gallant team from Fort Worth Playing with his jaw encased in a wire protector just as he had all season Frankie beat the Horned Frogs at the passing game which they rather than Georgia had long been noted in football circles Then after TCU was out of the ball game Sinkwich rambled 43 yards through a broken field for the last Bulldog touchdown to demonstrate that he had more than an knowledge of the running game as well Frankie threw three touchdown passes while Georgia was rolling up its commanding 33 to 7 lead during the first half The first one went to Congo the second to Kimsey and the third to Keup-er Georgia's remaining two first-half touchdowns came on a buck by Krupcr and a pass from Todd to Davis The lone TCU score in the first two quarters came on a plunge by Kyle Gillespie following a costly Bulldog fumble Next to great show fans today were talking about the great comeback registered by TCU after Georgia had rolled up a 40 to 7 score early in the third period Three times the Frogs marched across the Bulldog goal on passes Gillespie to Alford Nix to Alford and Gillespie to Kriug but r-von that gallant stand was only climax For the Orange Bowl game
