Ski club in trouble by GREGG DEINNAN Sun Sports Writer Glenorkey Ski Valley, Ltd. is in trouble. Although the trouble is financial it all comes back to a lack of snow. The problem is so bad that it is threatening to cause the closure of the ski hill. "We've had very short seasons the last two years," said Dr.

Frank Purdie, chairman of the board of directors of the company. "In both years. we weren't able to get going until January and then we had an early spring. "We're indebted now to a bank but we still say our- assets are greater than our i a i i i he added. "Therefore we'll try another year.

If things don't work out we'll have to declare bankruptcy." Mo Glenorkey Ski Valley, Ltd. was started in 190C as a non-profit, private company. It issued enough shares for 50 members, some of whom are non-active members. On the property, located about 12 miles west of Brandon on the Valley Road are two rope tows run by tractors, a club house built by volunteer labor, ski patrol snacks and toilets. "The company was formed strictly for the good of the community," offered Dr.

Purdie. "No one entered with any ideas of making any money." The company held a shareholders meeting recently and only 10 of the 50 shareholders attended. "Some of the shareholders have moved away since the inception of the company," commented Dr. Purdie, "but it's rather hard to do anything with this number of people. "Somehow or other we have to raise enough money to buy a snow-making machine.

It's usually cold enough in November and December to hold snow if we had some. "It would also be nice if we could afford to put in a T-bar rather than the rope tow. This could mean greater participation." Phyllis Sharpe, secretary of the company, echoed Dr. Purdie's sentiments about the need for new equipment. "The lack of snow is just making our financial situation worse." Mrs.

Sharpe commented. "Unless we get some financial help for a snowmaking machine and a T-bar, I'm afraid The company is at the stage now where it is looking for financial aid from just about anywhere. "We've come to the feeling that if we can get private individuals or, a service chib to take over our assets and run things, this would make us happy," said Dr. Purdie. "We'd like to see enough- interest shown through service clubs or someone who would go for $25,000 or some such figure over a few years.

If we have capital we'll have the longer season because of the snow-making machine," he added. The company had to buy a new rope tow last season to the tune of $800 and that didn't help their finances any. "We are indebted to Norris Murray for his operation of the hill during the season," said Dr. Purdie. "He works pretty hard during the season.

"We'll carry on for another season and hope for an early snow, but if the snow doesn't come it could be all over." "Hie is building a ski area at Birds Hill," added Mrs. Sharpe. "We think our need is as great if not greater." Wanted: One snow-making machine! Okay, so it's almost June. But, according to Dr. Frank Purdie.

chairman of the board of directors of Mount Glenorkey, the local ski resort, is in desperate need of a snow-making machine. To make his point. Dr. Purdie went out to Glenorkey earlier this week and posed for this picture, as taken by Sun photo editor Dirk Aberson.
