Born in Lexington, she was a daughter of the late Jasper and Mary Coy. She was a member of Hill N'Dale Christian Church, a proud supporter of Special Olympics, breast cancer, and the Leukemia Foundation. Survivors other than her husband are three children, Heather (Chris) Burton, Stephen Courtiogur II and Lindsey three -sisters, Anna Nipper, Linda Mosley and Elizabeth Arnett; a sister-in-law, Roberta Coy; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and William Franklin Coy.

Funeral services will be 10am Fri at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home-Main St. with Bro. Phil Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5-8pm Thu.

Contributions are suggested to the Special Olympics, Breast Cancer or Leukemia Foundation. KerrBrothers Funeralllome.com ECKDAHL Betty Jean Tevis, 84, died Feb 22, 2010 in Lexington, KY. The widow of Andrew Eckdahl, Mrs. Eckdahl was a native of San Francisco whose family returned to Kentucky in 1939. Until retirement in 1987 she was a writer for the University of Kentucky in the public relations office.

Before that she held similar posts at Berea College and EKU. Mrs. Eckdahl graduated from Henry Clay High School where she was active on the speech team a and the student newspaper. She earned an AB in Journalism degree from UK in 1946 and became the first local news editor for Radio Station WLAP in Lexington. Other journalism work took her to WLW in Cincinnati, and then to WINS and WNEW in New York City.

She also wrote Movie Life magazine. Mrs. Eckdahl is survived by a son, Henry Stone Balke of Edison, NJ, a daughter, Liz Skelton of Versailles, KY, a Wade Hampton, of Lexington, and a greatgranddaughter, Isobel Hampton of Lexington. Her brother, novelist Walter Tevis, died in 1984. Her father, Walter Stone Tevis, was a native of Madison County, KY and descendent of a pioneer family there.

A memorial service will be held at Fri at Milward-Southland. Friends may call from 5-7pm Thu. www.milwardfuneral.com JENKINS Vernis Tolson, widow of Woodrow Jenkins, passed away Feb 22, 2010 at UK Hospital. She was a native of Wolfe Co. and was a wife and homemaker.

Survived by five sons, George, Gary and Wayne, Lexington, Ray, Paris, and James, Shelbyville; four daughters, Viola Shanklin, Lexington, Beverly Conkright, Paris, Natasha Jenkins, Corinth, and Donna Conway, Cynthiana; 21 grandchildren; and 29 greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Jackie Jenkins, and a daughter, Janice Purcell. Funeral services will be 2pm Thu at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home-Main St. Burial will be in Old Union Cemetery. Survivors include two aunts, Jean Campbell and Ethel Jones of Hagerstown; numerous cousins, and a dear and loving friend, Gloria (Jenny) Campher. A memorial service will be held in Hagerstown, MD on March 13, 2010.

Gil received his BA from Morgan State University (1955) his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton University (1962). He taught at Morgan State University, Uniy. of Pennsylvania, and Drexel After retiring from Drexel in 1999, Gilbert taught at Berea College, Berea, KY and Centre College, Danville, KY.

In addition, he was Assistant Director of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights' Federal Programs Division (1962-63), Program Executive (Maryland Governor's Cabinet, 1968-69), Senior Research Staffer at The Urban Institute (1969-70), and Exec. He was also a member of Midway Baptist Church, and the 1937 Midway Blue Jays State Champion- He is survived by his son, Eddie Wayne (Connie) Portwood, Midway; 3 sisters, Mildred (Mitchell) Johnston, Midway, Dottie (Kenneth) Lacefield, Mercer and Betty Woodrum, Nicholasville; one brother, Jimmy Portwood, Frankfort; Grandchildren, Kim (Gary) Rose, Armon (Chris) Portwood, Kelly (Mike) Turner, and Carole Portwood; Great Grandchildren, Elizabeth, Chelsea Rose, Josie, Riley, and Jacob Turner, Hayleigh Portwood, Christopher (Pamela) Lay; 2 great-great-grandsons, Colby and Dylan Lay; and several nieces and nephews.
