teammates were off to the side waiting for a Tennessee timeout to end Only 19 seconds were left the Vols clinging to a 16-14 lead And Steele stood alone The Wildcats had moved from their seven to the UT 18 in one last effort to win Quarterback Mika Fanuzzi had gained 51 of those precious yards himself and passed for 13 more But he wa out of it on the ridelines And Steele stood alone at the spot where he would attempt 34-yard feel goal to win or lose With the stadium lights piercing the near darkness Kentucky lost The field goal attempt was on target but it was short Perhaps a foot or less And Tennessee escaped with a victory it was lucky to get nervous but I was concerned with the Steele said later got a good snap and a good held I just got under it a little more than I And so the Volunteers' early lead ultimately held up Kentucky sewed twice in the third quarter and threatened two more times in the fourth including the missed field goal Afterward Wildcat coach Fran Curd simply said MIve never seen kids like these They came te fight and I criticize them Just as good as The satisfies show that UK was better yesterday The home team gained 340 yards total offense to 264 The Wildcat edge in first downs was 19-9 But the scoreboard fold a story of its own One reason for the final score was Inability to hold the ball on a soggy soft and muddy field Seven times UK fumbled and five times the Vols recovered But on the last drive the Wildcats held on Four minutes remained when UK took over on its seven Victory was 93 yards away and the Cats got 75 of those Quarterback Fanuzzi was the catalyst Twice he faded to pass kept the ban and ran for 18 and 14 yards Two incompletions followed before he found 'Jack Alvarez open over -the middle for 13 yards to the UT 45 On the next play Fanuzzi crossed ap the Vol defense and cruised te file left for 19 had superb day playing quarterback especially in the mud He did a super Job and he deserved Fanuzzi in fact gained 160 yards on 17 carries including 139 in the second half After the tweak the Junior quarterback was most effective In running veer attack reacting well to the Vol defense and showing excellent Judgment in picking his holes effort on the ground helped make up for the disappointing performance of Bonny Collins whe was held to 50 yards in 17 tries He fumbled four times and lost two of them to Tennessee thought Sonny was ready although he was not 100 per 1 (Collins Curd said sustained an injured toe in the Florida game) Just fumbled the ball But Sonny carried us long way this season and not down on Collins finished the season with 1213 yards leaving him 100 yards short of breaking the Southeastern Conference rushing record held by Ole Miss John Dottley Collins did move into second place surpassing Eddie
