SEPTEMBER 9 1 977 LORENCE MORNING NEWS Miss Hines Selected I As a Talent inalist 1 GENERAL SESSIONS COURT Trial for Gaskins Postponed By JOHN DAVIS Morning News Staff Writer Valerie Althea Hines of lorence Miss Black South Carolina will be one of 10 talent finalists to perform on network television ri day night in the Miss Black America Pageant Miss Hines was selected as one of the 10 ta lent finalists Wednesday night during pageant competition in Santa Monica Calif The finals will be broadcast on NBC riday beginning at 9 pm Miss Hines 20 a lorence native in her senior year at Limestone Colllege in Gaffney won the state contest in Greenville June 17 She is a daughter of Mr and Mrs reddie Hines of lorence a gradaute of McClenaghan High School and former first runner up in the Miss lorence pageant "I'm very proud and I'm so happy she reached the top ten" her father said Thurs day "I'm wishing her the very best of luck" I "I think it means a lot to al" who has been in several other contests he said "The only thing she can do now is do her Hines stayed in lorence while his wife went to California this week to attend the pageant Their daughter Michelle 14 went along see what Vai is he said The 31 contestants will compete in the final night of the pageant riday when winners in swimsuit and evening gown competition will be announced and judges will pick 10 pageant finalists and a winner Eleven judges scheduled to decide on ri day's finalists and winner include Am bassador Andrew Young and television per sonalities Germaine Jackson Jim Brown Vernita McGee Pam Grier and Dr Joyce Brothers Ten talent finalists were announced after the end of talent competition Wednesday night Bathing suit and evening gown competition was held earlier in the week but the finalists have not been announced Talent finalists will compete riday night during the pageant A trophy and $1000 will be given to a talent winner riday night and sev eral talent finalists will travel with Miss Black America next year Noble Sissle a pageant spokesman said Thrusday Miss Hines' singing and dancing to songs from the Broadway musical "Purlie" won her a finalist position in the talent competition She said before leaving lorence in August she was excited about going to the Hollywood area "Later I want to get into the entertain ment business" she said During early August she practiced the songs which she and her mother worked into a medley and dieted and jogged morning and afternoon to build endurance for dancing Miss Hines went to Los Angeles Calif last year and won the National Shrine Queen title After graduation from Limestone in May she said she plans to study theater in New York Among the prizes for the pageant riday will be $10000 and a part in a television show our runner ups will win prizes ranging from $2000 to $7500 By WAYNE ORD Morning News Staff Writer A trial for convicted murderer Donald "Pee Gaskins on a burglary charge was moved to October by a circuit judge Thursday in lorence County General Sessions Court The move was made when presiding Judge James A Spruill granted a motion for a continuance in the case from Gaskins' attorney John Grisso of Columbia Grisso said he was notified Wednesday the trial would be called Thursday afternoon By calling the case 12th Cir cuit Solicitor Kenneth Sum merford made it clear he intends to seek prosecution on the charge against the 44 year old man who was convicted in con nection with the Prospect mass murder case Gaskins who is serving two life sentences in the Central Cor rectional Institute in Columbia was escorted into the courtroom by about nine State Law En forcement Division (SLED) of ficers Two other co defendants were also taken into the courtroom where they entered pleas of guilty to burglary Charles She aly 21 and eagin 20 both of the Lake City area will be come state's witnesses against Gaskins according to Summer ford Sentencing of the two men has been deferred A jury will have to be impounded prior to the sen tencing to determine if mercy should be recommended in the case Burglary carries a maximum of life in prison However if a jury recommends mercy the judge can sentence the defen dants anywhere from five to not more than 40 years in prison Summerford said he will ask the jury for mercy in the case Both were released from cus tody on their personal recogni sance bonds and they left the courthouse with friends shortly after they pled guilty Gaskins and the others are charged with a burglary which according to the indictment oc curred on April 18 1975 at the home of Elizabeth Marlowe in lower lorence County Gaskins confessed to the burglary at a hearing on April 6 "He told me this morning he would pleas not guilty" Grisso co defense counsel for Gaskins said However a plea on Gas part was underdiscussion during private meetings Gas kins was also in telephone con tact with his other attorney Gracy Query of Charleston while meeting Grisso in the sol icitor's office Grisso said Gaskins has indi cated to him that he wants to plead guilty to the other mur ders he is charged with in lor ence County provided he is promised life sentences in re turn oundation has approved an $18763 grant to es tablish a legislative research program using selected college students Lt Gov Brantley Harvev announced Thursday Harvey said the program will provide the General Assembly with research capability on a continuing basis from graduate students at the University of South Carolina Clemson Uni versity and other state sup ported institutions of higher learning The lieutenant governor said the students will have the op portunity of making a practical application of their scholastic skills while receiving academic credit and pay Board Votes To Buy Site The lorence County District One School Board voted 8 1 Thursday night to buy the Char lie Dorn Smith property located off National Cemetery Road in order to build the proposed new elementary school in that site School board member David Eagerton cast the only no vole as he said "1 think we ought to stay where we are at" This was a reference to the Josey property near the airport on which the school board had originally planned to build the school Plans were changed when op position to the site blocked a grant from the Economic De velopment Administration Both Board chairman George Jordan and District Superinten dent Dr Bruce Crowley said they still felt the Josey property was the best site ormula Changed or Water Loans A more liberal formula for de termining the amount of grant Thursday night that he had applied for a loan for the City of Scranton under the re vised program He said the citi zens of Scranton had been ex periencing short periods of water shortage due to a water pump that is "breaking down" Smiley declined to say how much he had applied for but he said the new well that is to be drilled will cost about $80000 by itself Smiley said engineers told him that the present water sys tem had been damaged because it was pumping sand which wascaused by the drought He said the application for the grant should have already been ap proved Hill said the deadline for the grants as well as the disaster loans which the mHA is offer ing is Sept 30 He said informa tion on project assistance can be obtained from the mHA lor ence County office in the McMil on one of those murders This case is currently under appeal to the SC Supreme Court Asked if he knew why lhe sol icitor was seeking prosecution Grisso said he know "It's so insignificant" Summerford said the reason he is seeking prosecution is "be cause he (Gaskins) admitted he committed a He said he planned to dispose of the case in the October term of court by a trial or a plea During open after they pled guilty to charges of grand larceny and malicious injury to property Mark Baxley 18 and James Richard Jones 19 both of Rt 1 were sentenced to two years suspended to 60 days and $125 day's only jury trial a Rhode Island man was acquitted of housebreaking and grand larceny charges The charge arose from a June 11 break inof a home on Sumter Street in lorence Nadine Johnson a next door neighbor to Mrs Annie Brown whose home was broken into testified she saw Vincent Joseph Baroody 19 walk from behind the Brown home carrying a bag She said she saw him get into a car with anotherman and the two drove off According to a report $75 in cash some clothing and a shoul der bag were taken Mrs Johnson said she talked briefly with the man in the car and she later related this con versation to lorence County Sheriff Department Inves tigator Elijah Harkless lorence County Public De fender Ernest Hinnant asked her "Are you sure Mr Baroody was not the person seated in the "I am sure" she said Harkless testified that he in terviewed Baroody after he was arrested in Darlinmgton and that Baroody admitted to him that he was at the house but that he never went in it Baroody said he talked with Mrs Johnson at the car accord ing to Harkless Hinnant asked if the conversation Baroody re lated was word for word" the conversation Mrs Johnson related Harkless said Baroody testified that he was hitchhiking to Myrtle Beach when a man in lorence who he knew only as picked him up He said he went with to the house but hedidn know the man wen into the house with intent to steal Baroody said he never knew that stole the items and neither did he give him any of the items Three Lake City youths weregiven jail time to serve after they complete this school year when they
