Street lorence Eugene Pawley a descen dant of one of South Carolina's earliest families for which Paw ley's Island is named died July 10 in Graham Texas at the age of 71 Memorial services were con ducted in St Stephens Episcopal Church in Coconut Grove la Pawley was in the aviation business with his brother Ed ward William Pawley before and during World War II and helped to found the lying Ti gers which operated in main land China before the Mao re gime takeover His father the late Edward Pawley was a native of Ben netsville but had moved to lorence before marrying Pawley was born in Cuba where his parents had moved and were in business with the United States government sup plying food and equipment to the navy base at Guantanamo Bay He went to school in lorence for a couple of years during World War I and visited friends and relatives here when he pas sed through He spent World War II in the Office of Strategic Services in Washington as head of the China desk After the war he
