Broiler-fryers and turkeys continue to vie for shopper attention at price levels that remain economical. Canned tuna is again one of the main attractions star among seafood items, though fresh fish bar* gains are available in many regions. Vegetable offers have expanded in most areas, though hot weather in the Southwest has reduced local selection. Nationally, best buys include green beans, tomatoes, cabbage, green peppers, carrots, lettuce, eggplant and corn. Best fruit buys include cantaloupes, grapes, nectarines and peaches, with regional bargains including avocados and new apples in the Northeast, watermelon in the Midwest and plums in the West. Grocer counter attractions include peanut butter and salad and cooking oils. Sugar prices have been inching downward as grocers use up stocks brought during the high- price period earlier this year. Wholesale prices are already much lower. Marine Officer And Family Visit at Avon AVON — Maj. Harold A. Hatch, USMC, Mrs. Hatch and their three daughters, Sue, Sara and Sallie, have been visiting relatives in Normal and Avon since the first of August. This past year Maj. Hatch has been attending schools at Quantico, Va., spending 42 weeks in the amphibious warfare school, followed by a 6-week course in nuclear, biological and chemical weapons employment officers school. He is now joining the 1st Marine Division and the family is en- route from Richmond, Va., to Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, Calif. There he will be assigned to a staff or command billet commensurate with rank, for a period of 2\%. to three years. This tour of duty will include 12 to 13 months overseas with a Marine transplacement battalion, the probable location of which will be Okinawa and other Southern Pacific areas. Maj. Hatch is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter S. Hatch of Avon. The first Meramec River 25- mile canoe race, Aug. 24, 1963, starts in Onondaga Cave, Leasburg, Mo., and ends at Meramec Caverns, Stanton, Mo.
