Ludmilla Written in a rather tightly knit sonata form foe Glinka' was a pleasant preparation for Symphony No 2 in Minor Op 27 The opening Largo of this symphony is a brooding mood piece a kind of Tschaikowsky 1 minus angst The Slavic temperament pervades the music Mr Alessandro was in command of his musical forces but could not infuse much interest into this movement Things picked up a bit in the second movement a scherzo labelled Allegro molto The third movement an adagio came into its own with the intensely lyric outpouring of melody characteristic of foe composer The orchestra achieved performance of this three-movement composition written in Vivaldi's typical fast-slow-fast form The orchestra I regret to say decided not to play together some of the tftng and Ani dSmaged the purity of the sound It made amends however when the four Romeros combined to present Concierto Andaluz for four guitars and orchestra This loving tone poem filled with Spanish flavor is scored for strings horns woodwinds and two trumpets It has a beautiful second movement in pastoral vein filled- with ornamental runs on the guitar echoed by the flutes The mood is a kind of mystical identification with the Andaluclan countryside The third and last movement gives free rein to the talents of the Romeros and features foe thrumming rhythms associated with' the guitar: This is intensely nationalistic music and pleasant HtoHig Maestro Alessandro proved himself a disciplined musicianly conductor if not particularly exciting One suspects that given more rehearsal time the Vivaldi could have been a little gem One is grateful for foe variety provided by the guitar compositions amid the usual collection of symphonies et aL Purchased Jerry Brandt and Stanton Freeman owners of the Electric Circus
