By now sure you have figured out that Sivle Yelserp is Elvis Presley spelled backward Now all the above is a roundabout way of getting into a review of Girls! It simply postpones what I have to say which is this: In this movie Elvis goes backward He goes back to his old time wiggle and a lot of things which first endeared him to the teens and pre-teens but did NOT endear him to their PapaS and Mammas in other words to adults I happen to like Elvis I think Ms broad shoulders and virility are a great relief from the willowy-type film hero 'so prevalent today BUT Elvis went to war not long ago ana drove truck and a couple of bargains in West Germany and was supposed to have grown up in uniform so to speak He had a phole new personality when he was demobilised plus a butch hairdo and' it all showed up well in his first post-mobilisation movie Adults even found him appealing But in Girls! the Sivle Yelserp has disap- eared and the old Elvis js ack plus wiggle The story worthy of him It makes him seem scat of silly The night I previewed the picture the entire audience broke up over one line of dialogue It was where Elvis said to his friend (Laurel Goodwin) Im the biggest dope in the world IV With that the entire house roared its approval This is too bad in any language Elvis should never made ridiculous too good a performer and his voice has a truly beautiful quality The trouble with Girls! Girls! is that the story makes him out to be -too much of a ladies man and far too noble He plays a chap who loves a tuna boat he is working on HIGH Walt Disney RISE TREEHOUSE CEREMONIES Kevin Corcoran (and ostrich) attend festivities' Swiss Family Treehouse Given TRIPPING THE LIGHT FANTASTIC Jackie Gleason portrays title role in 20th Cen- tury-Fox release at Four Star Theater 4' HOLIDAY MATINEE TODAY 2 PM he' gets too money by singing i dub where the girlsiiiger a -former sweetie (S yens) This causes jei the part of Laurel the boat owner makes a pss at Laurel and jealous But after a punches and a few more songs it all ends happily This story interspersed yrith heaven only knows how many musical numbers not only by Elvis himself but also by Miss Stevens Some of these are great no doubt about it but there are far too many of them If about half of Elvis ditties are: cut and all but about one of and the whole thing is edited further and tightened -up it should make a very entertaining romantic musical especially for the younger set This is Laurel debut and she is a wholesome refreshing type on the order of what June Allyson once was Those who draw waterfront characters well are Benson Fong Robert Strauss Lee Frank Puglia Lili Valen-ty and Beulah Quo Practically stealing the picture are the famed Hu sisters Ginay and Elisabeth and their brother Alexander That Ginny is mighty clever and as for chubby fat-faced pig-tailed Elisabeth a riot This number Elvis does with these youngsters is among his most' appealing Also engaging ii the shrimp boat number and the beautiful ballad name of which I am unable to give (it wasn't listed on the cast information sheet) Hal Wallis produced tond Norman Taurog directed Girls! Girls! hence the chuckles which come thick and feet Allan Weiss wrote the original story and Edward Anhalt and Weiss did the screenplay Loyal Griggs directed the photography in color and the seascapes are some of the livest and sharpest ever seen Stanley Johnson edited Please Paramount give us he adult Sivle' Yelserp next time We no longer want the dd Elvis plus wiggle That phase Los Feliz Screening Idiot1 Russian 'color film ini film interpretation of Fyodor classic novel is now playing a limited engagement at the Los Feliz Theater with Julien of My The pictures Will screen continuously from 2 pm today Distributed in this country by 20th Century-Fax at the re quest of tori DJ5 State Department id connection with its Cultural Exchange Agreement with the Soviet Union costars Yuri Yakovlev as the tragic Prince Myshkin and Julia Borisova as Natasia Filippovna Although both principals are with toe 3 leading players sian Vakhtangov Theater this is their first film to be shown on this continents Ivan Pyriev directed -tV SKOLSKY COL wont Appear Due to the Thanksgiv- rig holiday Sidney Sfcol- column will riot pear today It will be re-Vyumed'again tomorrow i1 The War lover UUNUKIUKS mm STEVE BESTypiCTURE!
