Police City police were trying today to figure put why people act as they do what puzzled them: At 5:30 a mt Jim Jones night watchman for Goodwin Brothers garage 450 East Main street was making his rounds when he spied a boy sitting in one of the new cars He approached the youth aifd inquired why he was there and how he got into the building The boy answered that he came In through a window and that he wanted to get warm The night watchman led the boy to the door and put him out He then continued his rounds and found where presumably the "cold" had pried open candy cigarette and soft drink machines A short time later the Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company store next door to Goodwin Brothers reported that an attempt had been made to enter their building The thief left his tools after failing to smash a ventilator fan covering a window The tools a sledge hammer a wrecking bar and a New Testament Police theorized the attempt was made by the same youth found in the garage At 9:30 am rescue workers In a giant metal bucket dropped deep into the smoke-filled maw of a blast-wrecked gllsonlte mine early today but found no trace of eight missing miners Little hope was held that the men trapped 500 feet below the surface by an explosion and fire Thursday were still alive Fellow miners thought they heard faint cries coming out of the debris Thursday night However George Collins day-shift boss and Joe Postma a miner said only falling rocks and sagging timbers broke the eerie silence when they were lowered to the 300-foot leveL Collins and Postma were in a metal fitted with a steel which was lowered on a cable The men wore oxygen masks and carried emergency equipment in the hopes that some of the missing men might be alive Rescuers their faces coated with white protective paste continued digging into the debris The main fire is out but smaller blazes continue to send fumes out of the giant trench The explosion wrecked the hoist house and several hundred feet of the open-cut mine which follows the deep vertical vein of gllsonlte across tha Northwestern Utah wasteland about 48 miles southeast of vernal The gilsonite a black coal-like substance ia a olid form of petroleum used in paints varnishes and linoleum compounds The blast spewed burning timber and rock throughout the depths A huge pillar of smoke mounted into the gloomy overcast sky Out of the smoke Thursday night one rescuer thought he could identify the smothered cries as those of Hal Cool 26 of Vernal and Jay Var Timothy 21 of Bonanza Junior Red Cross To Be Organised An organizational meeting more channels to the city Previously the FCC assigned two channels to the city and two applicants filed for each channel That was about 18 months ago Two months ago the FCC pro-osed to assign a third channel iere sd that one applicant might switch off and leave two channels uncontested thus apparently speeding up television for Lexington Donald Horton president of the Bluegrass Broadcasting Company (WVLK) then suggested that a fourth channel be assigned here to "obviate the necessity for hearings among the present applicants" The FCC announcement Thursday agreed with WVLK and said the requested channel 18 would be assigned here effective in about 40 days However officials of both WVLK and the Central Kentucky Broadcasting Company (WLEX) said today that they planned to switch their applications from channel 64 to channel 18 which has no applicants in its current assignment at Gallipolis Ohio The other the Amer-lean Broadcasting Corporation (WLAP) and the West-Bingham Television seek a permit for channel 27 Officials of WLAP said today that they intend to stick with that channeL Neither James Edward West nor Bingham of the West-Bingham company could be reached for comment Hearing dates on the contested channels are not expected to be set until after the assignment of channel 18 here The announced stands would leave two channels vacant 64 and 70 The FCC also announced that the University of Kentucky had not proved that a noncommercial educational TV channel should be reserved for it at this time But the commission said additional channels are available for assignment to Lexington mid that the request will be reconsidered later Guy Patches Day Seen As Bedlam Of Mass Arrests LONDON Nov 6 Shouting lymn-singing university students turned famed How street
