is no knowledge which not valuable -EDMUND BURKE. Watchmaker Gemologist GEORGE SCHNEIDER 1649 North Hudson Ave. FINE WATCHES GEM STONES August 14, 1940 Sidney OFTEN WHEN I think of the coming presidential election, I think of it in Hollywood terms. Perhaps the reason for this is that Willkie has been sold as a glamor boy. I am continually hearing the comment: "That Willkie will be hard to beat.

He has Now glamor is a word that is allied with Hollywood, Lana Turner has glamor, and Errol Flynn has glamor; therefore, I was a little surprised to learn that Willkie has glamor. But I guess in politics it is different. I suppose in politics you can have a pot belly and still have glamor. The Roosevelt cheer leaders insist that F.D.R* has glamor too. There is no denying that he is a "personality boy." Therefore, again coming campaign has a Hollywood parallel.

To me, Wendell Willkie is the Robert Taylor of politics and Franklin D. Roosevelt is the Clark Gable. Clark Gable was the big, established star at Metro, and had been for seven years when a newcomer, Robert Taylor, appeared on the scene. Everyone at Metro was excited. "We've got a new star," they said.

"a new glamor boy. He'll make. Clark Gable play second That's, exactly what happened. Robert Taylor became the No. 1 star of the nation.

The public; anxious to heroworship a new glamor boy, switched from Gable to Taylor. They had been faithful to Gable for about seven years, and that's a long stretch for the American public. They like to change. They like new heroes. This is very much the reaction to Willkie and Roosevelt.

F.D.R. has been the public's hero for about seven years, then along came a new glamor boy, the discovery of the Republican Party, and the public seems to be going for him big. Hollywords and Picturegraphs WILLKIE has been sold to the American public the Republican Party the same way that Metro sold Robert Taylor, They let the public believe that they were discovering Willkie. But, to use a cliche- they're good sometimes water always finds its own level. I only have to refresh your as to what happened in the case of Taylor and Gable.

Robert Taylor, didn't have sustaining power. He was just a flash in the glamor It is Clark Gable who's on the list of the bow office champions; Taylor isn't even included in the first-10. It was Clark Gable who was the fans' choice for Rhett Butler. He's again the leading actor of the nation, the people's choice. Of course, there is a definite place for Robert Taylor in pictures.

Continuing the parallel, I think Willkie is just a flash in the glamor pan. I think that by November, Roosevelt will again be the people's choice. I think that in politics there is a definite place for Willkie, but that it isn't the White House. There is a casting director with a major studio who is very friendly with a prominent agent. In fact, their wives are close friends, go shopping and play cards together.

At least trice seek the casting director and his wife and the agent and his wife out on double dates together. The other day this agent went to the studio see his friend, the casting. man, on business: It seems that the agent had Broadway stage player that the studio wanted to sign. The moment the agent's name teas announced. he was immediately ushered into the casting director's office.

It didn't matter that a couple of people were in the outer office waiting. AFTER THE usual helloes and friendly remarks, the casting man got down to business. He told the agent that the studio wanted to sign the Broadway actor, but since he had no movie experience, they wanted him on a long-term contract, starting at $500 a week, with options. The agent said that there were plenty of studios after the services of this actor, and the deal would have to be for $1000 a week for short-term contract. The casting director looked amazed.

pressed the button of the office telephone and said: "Send Mike Presently a uniformed studio policeman came into the office. The casting director said to the policeman: "Mike, show this gentleman. around the Then, turning to his best friend, the casting director said: "Take a good look at the studio, for this is the last time you're going to see it." When the casting director got home, his wife was waiting for him. She had heard from her best friend, the agent's wife, what had happened that afternoon. "I don't know what to do." she said.

"We have a date with them tonight to go to dinner and the Noel Coward plays. Shall I cancel it "Certainly not," said the casting director, sharply. "What happened today was only business." NOT FOR FREE Chaplin generally is considered tops in the field of pantomime, Allen leads, the parade of drawling wits, but when it comes to the mauling, roughneck type of comedy, boxoffice returns indicate that those refugees from an insane asylum, The Three Stooges, are in a class by themselves. Being of sound limb and desiring to remain so, it- was with some hesitation that we approached these three exponents of mayhem for a close-range study of brute comedy, the kind that runs almost entirely to physical violence. But, strangely enough, aside.

Once in awhile we get a little too rough, like the time I forgot to open my fist when I socked Curly, He was out on his feet and about ready to keel over when Larry and I grabbed him and we pretended to go into a huddle.

That's how we started that huddle routine in our act, by accident. IT WAS A RIOT "Lots of other things we do started the same way. I remember the time we were playing against an apartment house backdrop. Curly, almost by accident, pretended to look into a window and on a shocked expression. Larry put, I went over took a look.

It was just mildly funny. But the next performance we had the window cut out and when Moe looked into it, someone backstage squirted him with a bottle of seltzer water. It was a riot. "The trouble with the roughhouse comedians of vaudeville used to be that they'd get. a good routine and keep working it year after year without a change.

We don't do that. We're always adding something, changing our acfion and putting on a new routine. We have eight different acts we use and sometimes, on the road. we even change acts from one performance to the next because the musicians don't ALL-STATES PICNIC An All-States picnic will be held in Recreation Park, Long Beach, Sept. 7.
