has not hesitated to show his anti Taggart feeling on occa sions man and various Taken with his ana meet in Indianapolis on or about Jan 28 to outline campaign plans to mingle with Republican workers from over the state and to enjoy a big banquet it is likely tint a of President Cabinet wU a guest of honor and that the Cabinet member will carry to Indiana Republicans a greeting from President Taft Word from Washington indicates that' either Secretary of war Stimson or Charles Nagel secretary of commerce and labor will be the bearer of the presidential good will and get together message The presence of one of the Taft Cabinet as orator in chief will make the editorial banquet rtiemorable in the history of Republican editorial meetings in Indiana While the banquet is to be limited necessarily and while admission to the banquet will be by ticket as has always been the custom it is probable that there will be a Republican love feast at an open session previous to the din ner at which Mr personal repre sentative from Washington will be heard Plans are going forward for the Re publican love feast to be held holiday week under the auspices of the Repub lican state central committee It is ex pected that this affair will develop such enthusiasm and state wide interest as has not been shown in politics in Indiana in many years Things are moving with some celerity in Indiana politics these days The temperance forces which hold a state gathering at Tomlin son Hall Indianapolis Tuesday announce that Hugh Th Miller of Columbus will preside at the afternoon session of the convention The fact that Mr Miller has been prominent among Republicans hith erto mentioned in connection with the governorship gives this announcement unusual interest ormer Governor rank Hanly is 1o be one of the speak ers at the evening session It is predict ed that Mr Hanly will make one of the warmest speeches of his career Prominent Democrats prominent Pro hibitionists and prominent Republicans will mingle and take turns at the speech making in the temperance convention The night meeting will have a Democrat for its presiding officer The chief speak ers in the afternoon willbe Democrats In carrying out the character of the meeting tlie organizers of the movement continue to report now and additional signers to the call for the convention These signers are evenly di vided among Democrats and Republicans in the various counties open alliance with Taggart's old time foe Stephen leming Marshall's antipathy against Taggart has been especially an noying to the organization Democrats Some of political helpers ad mit that in emphasizing the leming al liance the Democratic Governor has gone too far in accenting the anti Taggart spirit In recognizing leming as the po tential big boss in Democratic politics it is pointed out that Marshall has been led to an unwise extreme of refusing to rec ognize Taggart and the state central committee When It comes to playing the har mony game as a general proposition Taggart has been able io show Marshall many engaging tricks Marshall has re fused to harmonize with Taggart but has acted in beautiful accord with Taggart's rival boss leming There has been a good deal of the John Lamb spirit in Marshall's attitude toward Taggart This spirit has led to poorly judged political moves on the par of the Marshall men from time to time At the end of the i peculiar game the Marshall men find themselves with their presidential boom absolutely at mercy Call it magnanimity good nature smart politics or party loyalty it is be ing said for Tom Taggart that in per mitting his committee to pass Marshall resolutions he jut it all over Marshall as a harmony Democrat last Tuesday Some politicians are inclined to the be lief that the Marshall folk were obliged to with that long deferred recognition before the Taggart permit was Issued for those presidential indorse ment resolutions The facts as to the re ported deal will come out in due time even as the facts came out in the Ed ogarty wardenship case Among practical politicians it is diffi cult to find anybody who believes that Taggart has lined up for the Marshall presidential boom without something definite in mind as to Taggart recogni tion It is known that the Taggart Demo crats look on Governor Marshall as an unfortunate and rather tactless inter loper in presidential territory Regard less of the perfunctory resolutions passed by an essentially hostile committee the feeling is against Marshall when it comes I to hard pan actualities among organize tlon Democrats These Taggart Demo crats believe pretty thoroughly espe cially the smaller gauge ones that the Democratic party is on the eve of gain ing national control and the presidency They believe also that conditions in the national Democratic party are such as to put Indiana far to the front of political opportunity There is some reason to feel that even if Indiana does not pick off the presidential plum it can go out and get the vice presidential nomination next year The Taggart men are so placed or they believe they are In politics that in case Wilson and Harmon mix things and each falls to get two thirds of the national The love feast of Democrats held in connection with the meeting last Tuesday of the Democratic state central commit tee was full of ginger and thick with brotherly love to all appearances 'fag gar organization men fluently indorsed Governor Marshal! for President And at the same time that the resolutions were passing and the organization men were paying homage to Marshall they were murmurous in their expressed hostility to the Democratic state executive There is no doubt as to the position of the Taggart men when it comes to Mar shall and his ambitions They are rebel lious They feel moreover that they have good reason for their hostile senti ments When it comes to resolutions such as were whipped through the com mittee the other day the organization or Jaggart Democrats speak soft and low find their words are honey sweet But privately and among themselves thev denounce Marshall because some of followers and helpers have consistently to that satisfaction Governor Marshall is with the Taggart men be cause he is interfering sadly with their plans for the future of Senator Kern It is always to be added that the Tag gart plans for Kern are not Mr plans The junior senator is always careful and skillful in keeping free from all suggestion of discord In fact he is in a position to command the support of Marshall himself in the event Marshall the in the presidential ring Marshall could support Kern as cordially as Kern Is supporting Marshall And this fact goes further to emphasize superior availability There Is a breathing space ahead for the Marshall boomers How long they will inflate themselves in peace is not certain But they are taking advantage of the situation Not only have Mar friends wrung from an unfriend ly soil the crop of resolutions they need ed not only have they wrung from a modest and shrinking personality the avoyal of ambitious purpose that they long have craved but they passed the danger zone of the American ederation of Labor meeting at Atlanta without finding the Marshall presidential candi dacy a subject for attack by the na tional labor oroganlzation The adjourn ment of the big federation meeting came opportunely The Marshall boomers lost no time following that adjournment in springing candidacy in formal fashion Democratic workers were disposed to give large credit to Myron King secre tary of the Democratic state central committee for the success of the low feast that accompanied the meeting of the committee last week It is said that Mr King was tireless in his effort to make certain the attendance of a large number of Democratic workers The re sult was pleasing to Mr King and sur passed 1 1 1 expectations A notable thing in ail the speeches at the Democratic love feast was the dili gence with which the orators pawed the air and made sonorous noise on national issues 'There was no discussion of state affairs Not a word was said at the love feast about the Democratic deficit in the state treasury Governor Marshall re ferred to it indirectly but he did not dwell on that fruitful theme to any great length Of chief Interest to the average Indi ana voter was the fact that practically all the Democratic representatives made it plain that the Democratic party pro poses to attack the principle of protec tion and that Democratic party ascend ancy means tariff reductions It was evident that the Democrats hid in mind the planning of a 1912 campaign on national rather than on state issues Representative Adair of the Eighth gressional District for example declared the Democrats in the national Gon gross would lop off $30100000 to $60 000000 annual expense at Washington Neither Adair nor any other Democrat discussed any plan for cutting down expenses in the Indiana state government Economy promises were not applied to the state but were voiced as applying to the na tion Economy in short continued to be a thing for future enactment by Demo crats A tariff for revenue only battle initiated by Democrats is especially interesting in Indiana where even in 1908 when the Democrats elected a Governor by 15000 tlie state went for protection as against by a substantial plu rality The Democratic love feast was largely If any Democrats were present they did not expose themselves needlessly Rooker a militant walked among the love toasters witii a faraway look in his eyes He ap peared rather like a stranger in an alien assembly Leonard Clore was mixing with the statesmen and constituents But he was not discussing the merits of county local option Apparently there was no argument to be had among the love feast crowd on the temperance ques tion The crowd was not there to wran gle It was not summoned for debat ing purposes but to generate fraternal affection and party solidarity So it was that the Democrats remained stu diously away from Myron King's party That love feast carefully analyzed resolved itself pretty definitely into a Ralston ratification meeting 'The only considerable check on the Ralston pro gram came in the form of about fifty high class emerge ie and resourceful Boehne boosters from the irst Congres sional District Ralston's home friends also were present and busy Being worked up by the stde organiza tion which is friendly to Ralston the meeting last Tuesday naturally was made up largely of organization dependa bles who also are Ralston boomers If these workers Interpret rightly the sentiment of the Democratic rank and file the Ralston movement is a sweeping march to victory If these workers on the oth er hand speak merely for the state or ganization and express the organiza desires there idhv be a large dis crepancy between Ralston's dele gate strength and the much desired ma jority which is neeossry to nominate the next Democratic candidate for Gov ernor The winner must have S7I votes is good many votes The organization which Is expected to garner these dele gates is an organization which is nol at al! popular with the great mass of Demo cratic voters in the country precinct? Probably 75 per cent of the delegates the Democratic state convention will come from n'lijniry districts nr from towns and cities of the sort where the element actually pre dominates and where if the Dem ocrats get busy they can name the dele gates in spite of all the state committee can do Will the predominant or rural strength go to Ralston and the state organization? That is the question before Indiana Dem ocrats The Boehne people in their ef loris to carry Rawaid tnc cause of tne irst candidate for Governor declare that the country voters and the Democrats in the smaller cities and towns are not for Ralston and they fur ther say that Mr Boehne of Evansville is making large headway with these vot ers They say too that Boehne is a sure winner with Democrats in the cities 1 and industrial and business centers Then too come the country Democrats speaking for themselves and aver that it is time to give the farmer a place in the van These country Democrats urge that Leonard Clore or some other farmer be nominated for Governor They i argue that the Democrats need a man like Clore next year that the party needs Clore more than Clore needs a governorship They assert that in order I to win next year the Democrats must nominate a farmer for Guvenor and that he must be such a commanding obvious ly able and conscientious fanner as Clore of Johnson County Mr Clore says he is in no hurry to an nounce himself as a candiate for the Democratic nomination for Governor is plenty of he says the people wish me to go after the gov ernorship they will be ready to act when the time comes without any long drawn out canvass or button holing contest on my part Speak ing in accord with mv own personal and selfish desires 1 will say that I do not wish to get into the governorship race However it is early to decide that question It may be said that I have re ceived flattering encouragement from over the state and that offers of sup port have been such as to give me the utmost confidence as to the outcome in the event I were to go after the nomina tion for Governor There is no question but that the progressive farmers of Indi ana desire to obtain recognition They believe they are entitled to something While Mr Clone's friends were quietly sounding out the Democrats at the love feast they also kept their watchful eyes on the goings and coming of Ert Slack of ranklin in home county It developed that Mr Slack through his friends was engaged in doing a little himself as to the senti ment toward a possible Slack boom for Governor And that was the thing about which the Clore watchers were con cerned James ortune of Jeffersonville who was present at the Democratic meet ing let it Lie known to some of his friends that he might decide to get into the race for the Democratic nomination for Lieutenant Governor At the same time there appeared the boom of Horace Kean of Jasper for the same nomination Richard Milburn was the custodian apparent of the Kean boom Kean and ortune come from the same district It is probable that in the event ortune goes after the place now held by rank Hall of Rushville Mr Kean will step out In case Kean runs it is said ortune will be for Kean of Mishawaka another aspirant for the lieutenant governorship was present for the Democratic love feast Clay Metsker of Plymouth tlie oth er 'Thirteenth District candidate was active day and night seeking support in tlie Democratic throng There has been evident an inclination to pair Metsker with Ralston in the race for first and second place on the next state ticket The friends of Metsker an I Ralston stem to be working in pretty general accord in many places riends of Representative A Barn hart Thirteenth District men who wish to see Mr Barnhart enter the governor ship race assert that race for Lieutenant Governor is a part of the or ganization plan to keep Barnhart from running against Ralston friends point out that an effort was made to get State Senator Proctor into the lieutenant governorship contest for tlie purpose of diverting the district from the governorship proposition More than that an intimation was dropped by the Thirteenth District crowd while here that the Barnhart boom for Governor was on the way and that it would arrive in due time "with bells The fight over the Democratic district chairmanship of the Second District has reached a decidedly acute stage Opposi tion against abius Gwin of Shoals the present district chairman is being worked up with energy Mayor Harris of Bloomington is being urged to go after the chairmanship John Archer of Spencer is said to bo considering the matter A Sullivan County man Robert Taylor has been mentioned as a possi bility District Chairman Gwin it seems got the ill will of some of the Democrats of his district when ho pulled off a some what tricky play in 1910 on the men of his own organization Gwin so the story goes culled the county chairmen of the district to Vincennes for a conference He did not tell the county chairmen the rea son for the call Once there it is said Gwin railroaded through a resolution de claring against Governor plan for nominating a candidate for United States senator at the state convention of 1910 The anti Marshall matter was rushed through so speedily that the secretary of the meeting failed to record the votes of the county chairmen properly it is said and at least two of the county chairmen who voted taking their stand with Marshall were announced in the newspapers as voting with against the Governor's senatorial selec tion plan It is said Gwin was given a chanre to retract publicly his announce ment that the vote against the Marshall plan had been unanimous in the Second District meeting Gwin failed to adjust the matter So at this time he is op posed for re election and there is bitter ness in the opposition It is a matter of history that when it went to a vote on the senatorial selection scheme Marshall won in the Second Dis trict by a majority of thirty six dele gates indicating that Mr Gwin erred when ho said tho district was united against the Marshall plan It is Criminal to Neglect the Skin and Hair
