CYANMAGENTAYELLOWBLACK Kermit Weible Remembering you is easy, I do it everyday, But missing you is a heartache That never goes away. I hold you tightly within my heart, And there you will remain. Life has gone on without you, But it will never be the same. For those who still have their Loved ones, Treat them with tender care. You will never know the emptiness As when you turn and not there.

Express your condolences www.dailyitem.com Chicago Tribune CHICAGO The Chi- cago woman whose near-fa- tal 1949 shooting of former Chicago Cubs first baseman Eddie Waitkus inspired the book and the movie died with the same anonymity with which she lived for more than half a century. The shooting, thought to be one of the first-ever stalker crimes, nearly killed Waitkus and temporarily sidetracked his career. The incident also helped to draw attention to so-called young, hero-worshiping female groupies who would pursue major league ballplay- ers, often relentlessly. Steinhagen died Dec.

29 at Swedish Covenant Hospi- tal of a subdural hematoma caused by an accidental fall in her longtime home, said a Cook County Medical Ex- aminer spokeswoman. She was 83. Born Ruth Catherine Steinhagen in Cicero on Dec. 23, 1929, Steinhagen was the daughter of die-setter Walter Steinhagen and his home- maker wife, Edith, both of whom had emigrated from Berlin in their early 20s. At some point in her teens, Steinhagen, who had begun using the middle name Ann, became obsessed with Wait- kus, who then was a first baseman for the Cubs.

After the Cubs traded Waitkus to the Phillies before the 1949 season, obses- sion with him intensified. It all came to a head June 14, 1949, when the Phillies were in town to play the Cubs. After the game, she sent Waitkus an unsigned note summoning him to a 12th-floor room in the now-demolished Edgewa- ter Beach Hotel, where the Phillies were staying. When Waitkus arrived at 11:30 p.m., Steinhagen told Wait- kus from behind the door, have a surprise for and then used a .22 caliber rifle that she had purchased at a pawn shop to shoot him just below the heart. After the shooting, Stein- hagen had told authorities that she sorry and that she had to shoot some- Ruth Ann Steinhagen, 83, ex-stalker.
