Although he was starring in Super 8 movies by the time he was 9 and had made his theatrical debut at age 7 in "Pippin," acting, says Young, "was really a hobby. "It was something I thought was interesting and neat to do and something no one I knew did.

I thought, 'Why not try something The "hobby" quickly turned into a paying profession. In addition to appearing in dinner theater productions (including a stage version of "On Golden Young took acting lessons. A manager soon followed, and the blond boy began appearing in print ads for Kool-Aid and TV commercials for Bob's Big Boy. His biggest break was, admittedly, the ground-breaking "Max Headroom" series. He now says, "It's hard to watch a show like 'Max Headroom' go under, because it was a good show and it was ahead of its time.

But what can you do? You're at the mercy of the network and of the audiences who watch or don't watch the programs." But Young remains philosophical. "You have no control over where your career goes," he maintains. "It's partially being in the right place at the right time with the right people. I've been very lucky, and if I can continue to act, great. But if I don't, then I'd like to direct.

And if I don't direct, I'd like to write. (He has already completed one screenplay.) I'll do something in the industry, even if it means I'm going to be carrying coffee to directors." The way things are going, the hearthrob-in-training needn't reach for the coffee creamer just yet. By MONIKA GUTTMAN Tribune Media Services Chris Young Is poised at the brink of heartthrob-dom. The 17-year-old ail-American blond already boasts legions of followers from the usual teeny-boppers to parents desperate for their youngsters to have a role model who isn't strung out on drugs or alcohol. Those followers have become entranced with Young through one or more of his impressive list of projects: the young computer whiz on "Max Headroom," the love-struck son of John Candy in "The Great Outdoors," the high-school senior in last year's NBC TV movie "Senior Prom." But today Young is where Michael J.

Fox was before "Family Ties," where Jason Bateman was at the beginning of "The Hogan Family," where Kirk Cameron was at the launch of "Growing Pains." In "Live-In," the CBS Monday night sitcom that debuted two weeks ago, Young plays 16-year-old Danny Mathews the kind of kid all the girls are crazy about except, of course, the one he's trying hardest to impress. It's the kind of role which, if successful, could pitch this Pennsylvania native headlong into the headlines. He'd become Hollywood's teen flavor-of-the-month, with scores of offers for feature films seeking to capitalize on his heartthrob status. The very thing, he says, he dreads. "I don't want to turn 'totally he reveals candidly one rare afternoon when he isn't working.

"I've seen it happen before. I think the best way to describe me is that I'm an average teenager, with a kind of steady Chris Young Success has been a team effort job. I surf and go to parties with my friends. I just want to stay where I'm at." Refreshingly open and intelli-gent, Young points out that his career success so far "isn't just because I'm so wonderful. I couldn't do this on my own.

Everybody's helped me out. I need people like my publicist and my agents it's a big team effort And having wonderful parents helps a lot." Young's parents live in Philadelphia, where his mother is a schoolteacher and librarian and his father a business executive. "They can't really just pick up and leave they have their careers," he says. "My mom can travel during the summer, but otherwise I'm on my own with a guardian." While filming "Live-In" in L.A., Young stays with his aunt and uncle. "They keep me humble," he jokes, then adds seriously, "I really don't think I have too much trouble dealing with the celebrity because I have people HIGHLIGHTS TV'S BEST BETS 11:30 ED Reading Rainbow (Season Premiere) The seventh season opens with "Barn host LeVar Burton attends an old-fashioned Tennessee hoe- MONDAY MORNING 7:00 This Morning From Havana: Soviet Foreign Ministry spokesman Gennadi Gerasimov; Henry Kissinger; prima ballerina Alicia Alonso; profiles of Cuban families: baseball in Cuba; the Hemingway Museum.

Movie: "Columbo: Sex and the Married Detective" ABC, 9 p.m. Actress Lindsay Crouse, better known for her stage and big-screen work, makes her TV-movie debut with an episode of "Colum-bo." She plays Joan Allenby, a radio sex therapist who murders her lover after she discovers that he has been sleeping with her own secretary. Lt. Columbo (Peter Falk) suspects the truth, of course; but how will he outwit one of the country's most famous psychologists? Crouse was an '84 Oscar nominee for her supporting performance in the Depres sion-era Texas film "Places in the Heart," but won equal acclaim for roles in "Iceman," "Daniel" and her playwright-husband David Ma-met's '87 thriller "House of Games." On the small screen, her most notable work was as Officer McBride in four episodes of "Hill Street Blues." She is currently filming a pilot for CBS with James Farentino tentatively titled "American Nuclear," based loosely on the lives of New York newspaper columnist Jimmy Breslin and his political-consultant wife, Ronnie Eldridge.
