The Kansas City Star Saturday April 3 1993 JO ! Psychic searches for woman leads officers to farm Police in 1 3 cities unite in hunt Man is sought in 12 attacks on women from KC to Kentucky Continued from C-1 leads That prompted Mahlon Miles editor of the Clinton newspaper to contact a psychic this year “I’m a former police officer” Miles said “and I once used a psychic on a homicide case and she was pretty accurate So 1 searched around and found this woman and she started steering us toward Odessa before the cops had anything going up there” Clinton police however said that long before the psychic was brought into the case they had interviewed a man who once rented a house on the land being searched The psychic identified in the March 25 edition of The Odessan as Joyce Morgan says she has talked to Hammond’s spirit while walking on the land Morgan was quoted in The Odessan as saying that at least two men were probably involved in Hammond’s death and that the victim knew one of them “I think she was kept here for six weeks That’s a long time Then she was taken someplace else” The Odessan quoted Morgan as saying “She is by a rock wall like a bridge or a basement to a house” Hammond was 20 years old and engaged to be married when she disappeared April 4 1991 About 15 minutes before midnight the line went dead as she chatted with her fiance from a telephone booth outside a Clinton supermarket A ground and air search lasted for days Since then police have struggled to piece together clues Hammond left behind While on the phone Hammond told her fiance about a white man and an older-model green Ford pickup that had a water scene with a jumping fish in its rear window Two witnesses told police they saw a man with a mustache wearing a dark baseball-style cap sitting in the truck near the telephone booth More than a year ago investigators got a tip that the truck was abandoned in Lafayette County about 35 miles east of Kansas City and - 40 miles north of the 'disappearance site Clinton Police Chief Bob Patti-son said his office asked the Missouri Highway Patrol to interview the owner of the truck — which turned out to be a blue Chevrolet instead of a green Ford The man linked to the blue truck also rented a home on the 60-acre farm west of Odessa Pattison said an informant had told authorities in early March that a green Ford pickup and a body were buried on the property A search of the property turned up some old car parts but nothing from a truck Pattison said Then in late march the Clinton newspaper and one of its reporters took the psychic to the Odessa area and she claimed to sense some clues to the Hammond case The Clinton police chief however remains unconvinced ‘i don’t have any faith in psychics” Pattison said “The particular person that’s being looked at as a possible suspect we’ve 95 percent cleared him He has a pretty good alibi He took a lie detector and we feel like he passed it” But rumors fueled by the newspaper article about the psychic continued to spread in Odessa Sheriff Bob Teichman decided to call in cadaver-sniffing dogs today hoping they would find a bJy or put an end to the rumors Teichman would not give the specific location of the farm and said the area would be sealed off during tw search In its article The Odessan recounted the psychic’s visit to the site as “eerie as the gray fog which surrounded the area” “Sometimes the psychic talked to those with her Other times she talked directly she said to Hammond” The Odessan wrote The psychic also told the newspaper that Hammond probably was buried near water “I see a pickup truck but it is not green” the paper quoted Morgan “It is white Dirty white a Ford or a Chevy It’s square in front I cannot believe it She is on it They backed the pickup up and put her in the back and have taken her down and buried her by t GA M E p IE C E By PAULA BARR Staff Writer Angela Hammond missing 2 years the water like a dog” Staff writer Paula Barr contributed to this article Police in 1 3 cities have banded together to track down a man who since 1 984 has robbed 1 2 women and raped seven of them The attacks occurred along interstate highways from Kansas to Kentucky including one each in Kansas City Blue Springs Lee’s Summit and Lenexa Several victims were real estate agents In one case the man approached a real estate agent but left without harming her The most recent attack was Aug 20 in Lee’s Summit when a woman was robbed at a restaurant The assailant also abducted a woman July 29 1988 from Blue Ridge Mall and drove her car to a cemetery where he raped her He dropped her off at the mall and as in other cases told her where the car would be parked police said The man also is suspected of raping a woman May 17 1991 in a Blue Springs chiropractor’s office and sexually assaulting a woman Aug 18 1992 in a Lenexa hair salon Kirkwood Mo Police Detective Gary E Quint has tracked the incidents since a July 16 1986 attack there During the investigation Quint learned of similar attacks elsewhere Quint told Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt Don Bizelli last fall about similarities in the cases Bizelli gathered officers from the other cities in December when more similarities were noted “It’s the same guy there’s no doubt” Bizelli said Friday “When you read the reports it becomes obvious” Since the meeting the Highway Patrol has distributed 15000 fliers with several sketches of the man’s face to real estate and law enforcement agencies along Interstate 70 The patrol also sent the fliers to hair dressers hoping someone would recognize a client Police gave the following description of the man: white 35 to 45 years old well-groomed blond to light-brown hair 5 feet 1 1 inches to 6 feet 3 inches tall and 210 to 250 pounds He was clean-shaven and wore neat inexpensive clothing Police think he is left-handed with large fleshy hands In many cases the man used shoelaces or electrical cords to tie up victims who were nude or partly clothed Bizelli said Then he took their pictures with an instant camera in all but the first attack USE YOUR CREDIT CARDS (91S 31-5300 (BOO) 373-0027 SALE ends SO o Cotn Biggest CARPET CA T TT ik JimJ! t6e 'tyean!
