I • ', , First Church Erected In 1892 Cost of 59,052 Met By Many Small Donations The first St. Cecelia's Catholic church was erected in 1892, when Father Michael Nicholls was parish 'priest. He remained herp until 1898. Father Nicholls died in 1933 at Nevada, at which place he served the parish following his departure from Algona for a period of 35 years. One of the • many interesting facts in connection with the construction of the first St. Cecelia's church .w.as the fact that many non-Catholics gladly contributed to the fund for constructing the original church. • An issue of the Algona Courier, dated April 20, 1894 (Which, pa' per was absorbed in 1916 by the Algona Upper Des Moines), listed a large number of names of residents of the community who contributed to the church but were not members of the Cath* olic faith. In addition to straight dona< tibris, 1 the parish conducted a niimber- of special fund-raising projects, such as dinners, counj ty fair booths, and oyster suppers.' The first church was dedicated May 30, 1894. The Courier said that the original church dost a total of $9,052.05. Of that amount $5,643.90 was raised at the time of construction and $3,408.45 was still to be paid by completion date.
