Feel Singer Did Not 'Warm Up' to Audience By CLARA MADSON A capacity audience came to the high school auditorium Thursday night to hear Elena Nikolaidi, Greek contralto star of the Vienna opera, in the 2nd of the season's Community Concert series here.

Next performance of the 4-number series will be the baritone singer, Conrad Thibault, on Thursday night, Feb. 22. The final number will be the Revelers, scheduled for March 17. Comment in general on the concert of Miss Nikolaidi was that she is a great singer but "did not really warm up to her audience." Wearing a black bouffant gown with a chiffon stole across its strapless bodice, which was ornamented with a red corsage, the artist sang with exquisite poise a program of songs well suited to her full, rich contralto. Only Two Encores Somewhat reserved in her response to audience applause, she came back to sing two encores at the end of the program, the 1st of these an aria from "Carmen," unannounced.

The other she announced, "Do Not Go, My Love," the only words she spoke to the audience during the entire concert. Her encores followed the singing of the aria, don Fatale," from Verdi's opera, "Don Carlos," to many the high point in her singing. Miss Nikolaidi opened her with a group of English songs by two early English composers, Henry Purcell's "Dido's Lament," "I Attempt From Love's Sickness to Fly" and "Nymphs and Shepherds," and Thomas Morley's "It Was a Lover and His Lass." German and Italian Best The German. songs were especially suited to her voice as were also those an the Italian. Only two numbers were by her native Greek composers, a sad little song, "La- yarni" by Spathy and'the gayer "Neranzula" by Margaritis.

German composers included in her songs were Schubert, Brahms and Richard Strauss. Besides the Verdi aria mentioned, she also sang an aria from his opera, "II Trovatore." Another Italian song was by Rossini. Miss Nikolaidi's accompanist, Behr, played two Chopin numbers after the intermission. Following strong applause, he came back to give an encore, De Falla's "Fire Dance." Before coming to Mason City Miss Nikolaidi had given a concert at Omaha. She left Friday afternoon for St.

Paul where she was booked for her next concert. Charles Wellin to Head Camera Club Charles Welliri was elected president of the North Iowa Camera club Thursday, night M. G. A. Roger Gast was elected'sec- retary and treasurer.
