Chico (Calif) Enterprise-Record Friday October 28 1979 Page IB Skip Reager Editor XT' Raiders Crush Chargers 45-22 By JOE SARGIS OAKLAND Calif (UPI) Ken Stabler Mark VanEegken went than 1000 miles apart but swear they both learned how to play winning football from the same system Thursday night with the Oakland Raid- when our backs are to the wall" said Sta weU every week" guess you win football games when you have said Van Eeghen who took a solid pounding from the San Diego defense and grudgingly won respect that's what we have been doing" The good news for both the Raiders and Chargers now is they don't have to play spin until Nov 4 10 days away running and Sta bier's passing accounted for all but one Raider score Booker Russell a young man who seemingly can smell the goal line was brought in three times when the Raiders had the ball on the one and all three times he found his way into the end sone Ira Matthews another young Raider added a touch when he ran 104 yard with a kickoff for still another touchdown It was era backed up against the wall the two old pros Stabler from the University of Alabama and Van Eeghen from Colgate found the formula that put the Raiders over the top 4522 over the San Diego Chargers It was a must situation for the in-and-out Raiders Another loss and they could have called it a season Victory their fifth against four setbacks means they can play anotherday San Diego which had beaten the Raiders by 20 points earlier in the season came to town with a 6-2 record and limped home today only a half-game ahead of Denver and one game in front of Oakland in the AFC West The Chargers had hoped to beat Raiders Like Playing at Home the score according to Raider Coach Tom What it really did was take away the momentum Trailing at one point 21-0 they had rallied to close the gap to 15-24 and had things going pretty much their own way in the third quarter when Matthews took off on his run Stabler and Van Eeghen wore philosophi- cal about the Oakland victory the club's fourth this season inasmpty home games "I wish I knew why we play well only day before a game there's some- thing that takes over inside claimed running back Mark Van Eeghen know you have to play a game you know you just afford to be sore you cant afford to be tired We're tired now and going to relax but for the time being today it was mind over matter It Just had to be mind over matter and we were able to gut it out agree very much with something John Madden said when he was Van Eeghen added said that a lot of players can play when they're feeling good when had a lot of rest and no bumps or bruises but it takes a special bunch of guys and a special person to play when you feel good Play as hard as you can when not at 100 percent and when not feeling good And I feel that's what we all did tonight I'm proud of our team playing everyone tough and going to cash it in" Van Eeghen was one of many special people on the Raiders Thursday night Against one of the toughest defensive lines in the NFL Van Eeghen banged out 95 yards in 22 carries and scored one touchdown Punter Ray Guy added his special touch to the game His first two punts of 56 and 71 Bob Dippel Oakland and finish off the Raidar old adage The Silver ami Black remained unbeaten at the Oakland Coliseum smotb-ther magnunTBt ering the San Diego Chargers 4W2 before 53709 roaring fans and a national television audience It was the fourth win at home for Oakland always played well at home? stated a pleased coach Tom Flores Now if only the Raiders can take some of the Coliseum turf and a tape recording of their screaming fans with them on the road much" said Fouts pass that success- maybe they can win enough games to reach fully you need the help of everyone round the playoffs you IlookatitmoreasaUamaccompUslfc if their habits stay the same the Raiders ment rather than one individual's will end the season with a 9-7 record the upset we lost the game Now it really tame as last year Oakland now 5-4 in the 303 yards That gave him four straight games in which he passed for more than 300 yards a first in the NFL But Fouts the least bit happy with his effort because he also threw two interceptions one that stopped a certain San Diego score and another that paved the way for Oakland's final touchdown I think records like that mean Judy Smith Paradise Harriers For the first time in seven years a team other than Chico High School is wearing an Eastern Athletic League varsity cron country crown Paradise easily outdistanced its competition to capture Las-' sen 67 Las Plumas 74 Chico 76 Oro-ville 125 and Pleasant Valley 136 Judy Smith of Lassen was an easy winner in the girls' race as she put 18 seconds between her and second doesn't mean anything to me Stabler completed a more modest 13 of 17 passes for 212 yards and one touchdown His passing though set up two other touch-dovms Van Eeghen meanwhile was a work- Chico Junior Tops Paradise Frosh 27-0 Chico Junior High School nailed down its most important victory of the season Thursday afternoon on the Chico Junior campus when it toppled Paradise's frosh team 27-0 inabattle of unbeaten teams Paradise went Into the contest with a 641-1 record while Chico Junior was 30 A large part of the Paradise offense was sidelined as Joe Duran was not allowed to play because of disciplinary action Duran had scored 17 touchdown for the Bobcat frosh in the seven games Scott Busbee and Mark Denn were the big offensive weapons for the Cougars as the two combined for 223 yards on the ground Busbee who scored on runs of 21 and 8 yards picked up 128 yards on 14 attempts Denn carried 27 times for 95 yards In all the Cougars rushed for 255 yards and picked up 35 more through the air for a 290-yard Busbee got the last two Paradise was limited to just 85 yards including 77 on the ground and just eight throughtheair Lassen place finisher Lori Wright over the 17-mile course Tammy Denney of Chico scheduled for 10 a Wildcats Sacramento State University football coach Bob Mattos is calling Saturday night's game with Chico State University the most important in his two years as bead coach By the same token Chico State coach Dick Trimmer looks at the contest as a for his team too game is a must for us he adds Kickoff will be at 7:30 pm in University Stadium bi reality it's not a make or break game for the Wildcats who go into the contest with a 1-9 mark in Far Western Conference play Chico State had better win though if it expects to give UC Davis a run for the championship Things only get tougher after the Hornets Next week Humboldt State visits here and the following week the Cats play what coach Dick Tlmmer hopes will be a showdown for the championship at Davis One thing is for sure the Sacramento 8tati gam is a big one for assistant coach Mike Clemons demons not only played ball at-Saccamento State be a teammate of Mattos the bead coach Unbeaten Vikings Travel to Lassen By BARRY PUNZAL (E-RSportsWriter) OAKLAND no place like home The Oakland Raiders can attest to that AFC West has four more games at home and three on the road From the outset of file game there was no doubt the Raiders were going to bounce back from their dismal performance against the Jets in New York only four days ago Chico Junior High's yards on the ground last week One thing that will give the 'Cats added help will be the return of fullback Dan Sweeney Sweeney who ran for 136 yards in his last outing prior to being hurt not only gives the 'Cats another running threat bin Outside of the doubtful playing status of quarterback Craig Renda Butte will go into this Saturday's Golden Valley Conference football game withShasta of Redding atfollstrength Butte and Shasta both 1-1 in the GVC win 14 in possession limit Myron Fountain assistant manager of the Gray Lodge Waterfowl Refuge west of Gridley reports that a big influx of birds mostly pintails have moved on to the refuge But this was probably due to hunting at nearby private duck clubs rather than ui- coming migratory birds from the north Once a heavy freeze hits up north there'll be a huge supply of ducks in thq central valley The quota at Gray Lodge this year is 400 yards put the Chargers inside their 15-yard line which eventually gave the Raiders good field position after San Diego punted In both instances the Raiders did get good field position near mid field and capitalized with two touchdowns Guy said he was especially for the game because of the Chargers blocked one of his punts in the first meeting "I was feeling really good I knew what I had jo do and I just had to put everything out of mind and do Probably the most special person of the night though was rookie Ira Mathews It was Mathews 104-yard kickoff return (a Raider record) in the third quarter that broke San Diego's back claimed Flores The Chargers had just driven 65 yards for a touchdown to cut the score to 24-15 But on the ensuing kickoff Matthews took the ball four yards deep in his end zone and at first -appeared he was going to take the touch-back thought about downing the ball but I figured I could run the ball out further than the said Matthews It was decision to run the ball that put the Raiders back into the AFCWest race fensive front with an assortment of screens and short passu Health-wise the 'Cats will be without defensive backs Mike Thomas and Mike Hector The latter is gone for the season while Thomas might he hack far the Davis name nerback Ron Souza is possible Renda may suit up but his chances of seeing any action are slight due to a torn ligament in his ankle Silva completed only twoof-ten passes last weekend in 6-2 victory over Siskiyou but that statistic is misleading because file game was played in a severe rainstorm Silva ran the offense weU and considering the weather did an good job because he was able to avoid aqy serious mistakes About the only lineup change this week will be that Gary
