Tuesday af ternood Just as the rain storm was coming up Mrs Gregory went out into the yard to ring the dinner bell She stopped a moment under a large locust tree and then walked away about fifteen ortwenty yards 1 hen the tree a very large one 1 three feet thick was struck by lightning and torn to splinters Mrs Gregory was severely shocked but recovered after a few minutes Some chickens which Hands Engage In Difficulty And OneOf Them Killed i A tragedy occurred in Mr Jas A Radfords wheat field near The Square Wednesday afternoon about two oclock The facts as gathered are about as follows Several colored hands were at works acl ing wheat among them Stephen Stewart a brother of Mr Radfords foreman and Grant Pet tus Pettus it seems had been very careless in keeping up with his part of the work and had been reproved ty Stewart Who in the absence of his brother was looking after the work This angered Pettus and he threatened to kill Stewart it is claimed This trouble took place in the forenoon When the hands had gone back to work after dinner Stewart re marked to one of them that Pettus had a pistol About this time Pets tus drew his revolver and li Stewart was shot in the stomach He fell and soon become unconscious I dying in about three hours ttus immediately fled and go ing into the neighborhood of Bell his old home informed some of his friends that he had wounded a man and asked for protection When an investigation revealed the fact that Stewart was dead Pettus was placed under surv lance and the authorities here notified of his whereabouts Deputy Sheriff
