Maybe but it's an interesting theory to contemplate and one which cant be totally disproves It's a theme that has provided author Andrew Tomas now a Chico resident with the material for several books in particular for “We Are Not the First" first published in France in 1980 and in this country hi 1971 Others published to date are “Atlantis — From Legend to Discovery” in which he concludes that there is truth to the legend of the lost continent “On the Shores of Endless Worlds” dealing with the search for cosmic life (which he firmly believes exists) “Beyond the Time Barrier” which he describes as a combination of Einstein’s relativity theory and the predictions of ancient seers and mystics and “Shambala Oasis of Light” the story of the lost Himalayan kingdom of high wisdom All except the last have been published in the United States and altogether the five have been published in 17 countries Tomas has just completed “They Were the First” a sequel to “We Are Not file First” and has already started on his next project a book about the mystoies of the human mind He and his wife the former Heather Hinshaw of Willows have recently moved here from Europe choosing Chico partly because of friends and relatives in the area and also because of the university library facilities which he'll use for his research Tomas' own biography is as unusual as file topics he pursues Of Polish-Italian descent he was bom in St Petersburg (now Leningrad) Russia grew up in China spent the war years in Shanghai where he worked yoxfre giving taste before you as an accountant and then moved to Australia continuing in that profession How did an accountant get into writing books which venture into as he calls tt “file no-man's land where science fears to tread?” “There are two kinds of people” he says “those who take everything for granted don’t question anything and are too lazy to think whereas those like myself who don't have any authority Influencing nm- pwrfiMimw " Itbegan as a hoboy! and while in Australia he had been doing research into “all kinds of unconventional fields” and had written a number of magariM articles It took him seven years to write his first book ("Atlantis") and at that point he left Australia for Europe to by to have it published “You can't publish a serious book in Australia" he says “All they read is Reader’s Some are skeptical Digest Junes Bond and the Bible” With Europe as his home for the next 10 years he traveled all over the world to gather information for his books Trips included one to Moscow to do additional research for “Atlantis” and to discuss his theories with scientists then and one to the Himalayas where he did research in a Tibetan library and had an audience with the dalai lama This summer he and his wife visited important archaeological sites in ivia and Peru A fennsco Product buy While Toma i makea no claimi that hii conclusions are the ultlnpte answers he does insist that the wealth of facts he draws on to make them ere accurate and have been checked by expert in the various fields The conclusions of course are another matter and he defendi them with the reasoning that he has as much right to speculate aa anyone else especially where scientists can only answer that they “don’t know" about file validity of some of them In subject matter and in the combination of fact with ifion Tomas’ books are to those of Erich 'von Dahnlken the author of “Chariots of the Gods “In Search of Ancient Astronauts” and othen But Tomas who has known von Dahniken personally for a number of years feels file other has a tendency to often “stretch" and “pun” for his conclusions which he feds he doesn’t Tomas does however see them as allied in an important respect "We stimulate minds perhaps someone will provide the enswere” The existence of life an other planets is one "answer” Tomas definitely believes in To illustrate the point that It’s a logical conclusion simply in a mathematical sense he sees the metaphor of stars like our inn as represented by all the lights in New York City “We’re just one little bulb” he say! “Books like the ones I write help people to prepare for the inevitable possibility of this planet coming into contact with life on another Whether we go there or they come here doesn’t matter I don’t say It will happen in 10 years but it will happen The general conclusion of scientists is that there is other life in the universe" Tbmas also has definite views on what these encounters will be Uke and he feda that for the most part present-day science fiction has taken off on the : track fiction today is impoverished even sick" he declare! noting that Arthur Clarke and Isaac Asimov are exceptions to the rule "It's an extrapolation of the conflict and violence on earth n ‘war between the worlds' view” That’s all wrong he feel! It’s his view that with advanced technology comes the realization that planetary survival depends on pence since the other option is global suicide through the proliferation of mdesr weapon! He feels that any advanced civilization (ours or any other) that might make the contact will be of a benevolent sort not an invading force A world citlien of aorta Italian Drivers Learning To Beat the Speed Trap ROME (UPI) - Italian motorists faced with new speed limits are beginning to learn the tricks of their American counterparts when it comes to speeding — and they're getting away with it ' After months of wrangling a ' new law was signed Saturday implementing a complicated new speeding law with eight different speeds It will be monitored by a combined radar-photographic system The measure sets speed limits varying from 31 mph in urban areas to 87 mph on rhighway! according to engine capacity The law would be a nightmare to enforce without a Swiss - made radar - photo system which measures speeds mid photographs the rear licen- se plates of offenders triggering superfines from $165 to $660 But Italian like American motorists who were miffed by laws that lowered the nation's speed limit to 55 mph are finding ways of beating the new -Maybe YairOld Finaci Costs Mon TfesiA Hiw Ossl MflWTOU CAN SAVE ENERGY illTY AND FUEL COSTS TOO! The question of which planet makes the contact brings up a point Tomas makes In his writing — that the gods of the andenta were actually visitors from outer space His reasoning is fids: If we come upon a lees advanced race we will appear aa gods to them and the same would have been true if early men on this planet had been visited by beings from outer qwce Concerning the reaction to his theories Tonis who has lectured extensively says “I haven’t been laughed at a lot" He adib however that some people have told him that they were skeptical about what be had to aay but notes that "skepticism isn’t criticism it’s a bias an emotional frame of mind often accounted for by religiousbelief!” But he’i pfaUooapMcal about whatever criticism they might get “Every invention scientific and pioneering dis-always been st-tqr the majority of ig-noramnse!
