of an AcreNkorr Alter the Fact Last Thursday morning the pleasnnt little village of Bewleyvllle iu this county was thrown into a fever of excitement by the revclntlons of a Ind of 17 or 18 years of age whoso rcmorso was making his young lifo burden nnd torment which not only solved Hie mystery attcudiug the sudden nnd unexplained diiapprarnuce of Mr Jnmes Stafford from lho place but resulted In the discovery of his body in ad abandoned and disused well on the place of Mr Drury nnd led to the arrest and incarceration nf bis murderer The particulars of tho horrible crime as furn ished us by a faithful correspondent and derived from interviews with gentlemen of tho viciungo are ns follows Charles A Hall nyoung man of 19 years hns been working for Mr Drury for the past eight month Jnmes Stnfibrd had bcennbout the village for throe years Some time ago Stafford presented Holl with silver watch und hubscqucntly demanded its return At first Hall refused to comply with the demand but Stafford persisting finally handed it to him nccbaapanying th article with the remark If you ever say 1 it 1 wnicu to me again i kiii you Alter- wnrds they nmde up their quarrel and apparently became ns st friends as ever On Thursday November 11 there was corn husking frolic on Mr Drsrys place which was attended by both Stafford and Hall nnd during the afternoon they exchanged or swapped ov ercontt That nikt Stafford disappeared As he had entered the community anannovinced three years before and during his stay had farmed ao tics to bind hi in to it his going as ke came was not particularly wondered it uo oae dreaming of attributing it to foil play or imagining that in the quiet of night while slumber chained them to their coaches that on the street their village hid occurred a foul assassination and that an old well in sight of nearly nil their doors held ike ghastly proof of the dark and damning deed But so it was Last Sanduy week George Paul lad of 17 or IS and son of Mr Paul was acting in manner stick as to create the impression that hie mind was getting off balance He endeavored to sell hi over coat for a saiu much less than its netaal value and did dispose his overshoes almost new for ted cents He stated tkat his object was to rnise money leave heme as he der ircd to go away from Bcwleyville and never rctnrn His explanations of this sudden rietire to leave home were eonfastd and unsatisfactory Failing to accrue the means he wis perforce compelled to remain Thursday morning of last week he remarked to his brother John that he could no longer sleep ef nitibts John asked him what wis the mntter His reply was that man hnd been killed The brother presiett him for an explanation and then the poor trime hnunted lud told this story On the night of the ctru hasking at Dru ryt Charlie Hall bad come there and called him out of the honse telling him that he wanted him to take a walk as be had something particular to tell him He complied with the request They had sroeeedtd bat fcliort distance when Hall led hiin ta the body of Stafford lying apon the round ruvvr DruryH fence with the throat cat and stone dead Hull told him that he had killed the man nnd had brought him there to assist him in carrying the body crs the field to an old well and dump it in The shucked and horrified boy at first refused to have uny thing to do with it Hall then swore that if he did not do as he wished he would serve him the same way that he wtiuld never leave there alive The lad being of timid nud yielding nature was easily frigliteuea into doing the others bidding aid did assist ia conveying the body ef the reordered man to the well into which they cast it Tata Unll swore that if ever he breathed a word to living soil ivbout what he had seen nnd they had done that night he would kill him They cleansed the blood from their hands iu an adjacent pond and then proceeded down town to Mr Boone Rigsbys store which wes still open Inside the store he noticed blord on Hulls face and tailing him out of doors advised him to wipe It off They vtalkcd off together for some little distance and separated Hall going en oat to DruryH and George home to bed Since that night the boy has lived a life of constant misery and notwithstanding Halls threat which he fully believed the latter would not Jicsitato to carry into eaeet ne could keop the terrible secret ao longer John did not know what to thiik of this story nnd fearing that the boy had gone crazy asked Doctor Ptnnington to see nnd talk to him To the Doctor he repeated tho same story not deviating in the least particular from the aarratioa made to John Mr Paul tho father remembered distinctly that Hall had called Ueorge oat of the house one night about the time mentioned Tho physician discovered no sign of insanity about the lad bat was deeply impressed with the truth of his ttatemont so much so that ho suggested that the well bo searched Accordingly a party was speedily organixed ladders procured and Mr Wallnco Dnncan descended into the well Snro enough there was a body This wbs brought np and every one present ree ognited it by tho clothing the flesh having nil dropped from tho face and it was encased In tho identical overcoat Hall had swapped to Stafford tho evening of his disappearance To make assurance doubly sure a memoranda book and other articles belonging to Hall which he had forgotten to remove at tho time of exchanging coat i were found in the pockets Tho truth of George Pauls story or confession hnving been thus horribly estab lished the next move was tbo arrest of the murderer which was nccorupliihed withont difficulty as ho did not wake his appear anoo on tho street having kept his bed that morning on tho ploa of indisposition until nine oclock Deputy sheriff McGlolh Ian at once nrrostcd him Hall asked him on what charge Thft officer told him for the mutder of Jim Stafford Hall smiled and gave no sign of conscious guilt nor displayed particle of nervousness over tho matter When asked if he had killed Staf fjrd ho answered ivffirmntlvcly but added that ho hnd to do It In ordur to preserve his own life His statement wns that he was sitting on the fence the night of the murder with his knife open and thrust up his coat sleeve Stafford came along nnd knocked him off In falling the kulfs fell to the ground He sprang up grappled and threw Stafford falling upon him The moon was shining very bright and he saw the knife blade gleaming within reach He stized the weapon and plunged It into the mans throat He fall corrohorittd George Pauls statement as to the disposal of the body When asked why if hi had bien compelled to kill Stafford in self defense he bad concealed the body he replied that be did not know 5ext morning after the murder Mrs Drury saw him washing blood from his knife and exclaimed Why Charlie what bavevou been dning He smil ingly replied Oh I have killed a maa As he was greatly given jesting Mrs Drury supposed that his reply was a joke nnd thought no more nf the eirenmstanee The very sight befnre the discovery of his crime and his arrest he was with a party ef young people playing eaehre performing on the French harp singing and joking and the life and soul of the parly The murder of a man seemed to weigh no more npon his conscience than the killing of a squirrel Staffords remains were bnried Friday nfter an inquest was held upon them nnd Friday afternoon Hall was lodged in jail to await the action of the next grand jury His hasty removal to the county seat with trt examining trill at the scene of his crime was in consequence of the derttlopaiaat of a mob spirit that threatened to culminate in lynchiag James Stafford the asardered man was aged aVeul 40 years and earae to Rewley ritlc nboit three yean ago ne had followed the river as a boatman nnd was origin aUy from Loaisville where it is tftliered he has relative liriag Re was ahoat five feet five inches ia height had black hair aad eyes dark skin rosy cheeks and decidedly handsome He is graceful in carriage and polite in his manners and address He is strong and active and determined and reckless in disposition His mother has been dead for several years since which event he has had no settled hour His father resides near Hardiosbarg and oar correspondent says he has one brother living in or aear our eity and another HetvteeM MelKiibora Howes Valley is the pride and boast of oar neighboring county of Hardin Its lands are th richest and its inhabitants the wealthiest most intelligent and aristocratic of any neighborhood in the county It is stadded with churches and schoulhoases and hitherto his been singolarly free of tho stale of erirae Therefore it cnusrd a chill hurror and amazement to pervade the entire community last Tuesday the 31st Inst when the intellizence apresd up nnd down the Valley that Mr David Carter an eld and estimable eitiaeu had been shot and mortally woanded by his neighbor Mr George Harrington more commonly known as Bud also a repatahle and esteemed cititen while Harrington in turn had been shotdown and killed by Mr Young Carter sn of David The particular of this terrible double tragedy so far as wo have beta enabled to gather them are ns follows On the day indicated a suit was bromrht and decided in magistrates court held at the blacksmith shop near Carters residenco to which Carter and Harrington were parties litigant the dispute between them arising while settling their accounts The decision of the court was adverse to Harring ton who became greatly enraged thereby In a few minntes after the eause was decided tho parties got togother and began talking the matter over Very few words passed before both men became heated and Carter branded some nssertion made by Harrington as false Quick ni thought the latter drew his pistol thrust the mnxzle in Carters face and fired the ball entering his month passing through the head and emerging nt the bsek of the neck Young Carter thinking his father was killed and determined upon avenging his murder ran to the house and got his shot gun and harried back to the sceno of the tragedy and before any ono could interpose to prevent the rash act fired both barrels of the weapon into the body of Harrington who fell dead in his tracks By this time old man Carter realized tho desperate extent of his wound and seising a large sledge hammer lying near sprang to the body of Harrington and dealt two or three blows upon its head crushing thu skull like an eggshell and scattering the brains ia every direction Then weak from loss of blood he sunk to the ground gasping and convulsed ns though in the ngonies of dissolution The horrified spectators then gathered him up ns well ns the body of Harrington and conveyed thorn to thu nearest honse when medical attention was gammoned for Carter whose wound was pronounced mortal by the physicians Both were men of means and married Carter was in the neighborhood of sixty years of age and Harrington not far from forty Tho mott Intense excitement pervades the Valley that so deplorable a tragedy and from saeh trivial came only a small sain a kw dollars being in dispnte between them The nniversal sympathy seems to be with the younger Carter who performed hi share in the dreadful woik of blood In defense of his nged and wounded futher Harrington wns a native
