take over the license of independent stations in Milwaukee and Birmingham Ala The new owners say Channel 62 will move to new larger more modem facilities before the end of the year They say they will spend $1 million for new studio equipment and up to $500000 for a new antenna Baltimore we spent well over $3 million to get the signal right and do it again in a minute if we had Banks said But a signal much good if it carrying programs people want to watch Until now Channel 62 had to settle for shows that none of the other stations wanted Given a choice a program syndicator much preferred to place his show on a network affiliate or KSHB Channel 41 a powerful independent ABRY has demonstrated the financial muscle to change that First Channel 62 announced the purchase of the local exclusive rights to prime-time KU and K-State basketball This week the station said it had acquired the off-network reruns of and Hogan as well as the syndicated show In the past those programs would have been much more likely to turn up on Channel 41 KSHB becomes more and more of a Fox affiliate one of the services which is not going to be provided in the same way that it was is popular Yudkoff said a role played successfully in other markets and it will be a key element All the equipment and new programs should be in place by April Yudkoff said That combined with a healthy promotion campaign will make the May period the first big ratings test for the station The pattern for Channel 62 will be kids shows during the day sitcoms in the early evening and movies at night That traditional schedule for independent TV station has worked well for Channel 41 for most of the last 20 years Banks and Yudkoff do not expect their success to come at Banks and Yudkoff said there would be distinctive local programs at Channel 62 In Baltimore for example the station carries a monthly magazine show with the mayor as host A popular show host was hired to create 50 segments a week each 90 seconds long The new owners yet know what kind of local programs will be produced in Kansas City but they know what they do: news Channel expense They believe their growth will attract viewers from the network affiliates For a market the size of Kansas City the two independent stations should collectively attract 16 percent to 17 percent of the viewers YudkofT said For the most part however the combined audience share for channels 41 and 62 has been about 1 2 percent One reason for the lower independent share might be the way the audience is measured Ratings in Kansas City are determined with diaries Independent stations fare better in cities where ratings are taken by meters Channel 41 has had a longstan- ding request to make Kansas City a metered market but other stations were not interested
