Stud Prospects Widely Argued By Breeders Homer Cooke Jn By Gall Fowler SEATTLE Dec 2 UP) Because a former sports editor saw a need for some like the baseball average system of putting the yardstick on Individual and team performances on the gridiron the American Football Statistical Bureau came Into being Homer Cooke Jr now an employee in the King county (Seattle) office is -the man who cooked up the idea of standardizing statistical forms and methods secretary of the bureau whose statistics already are widely used to show what teams and individuals do from week-end to weekend In 1937 Cooke with the aid of Auditor Earl Millikin himself a former football coach and official canvassed major schools for statistics which they could compile They got a response from about 70 schools and performances on some 100 players Total Jumps To 85 Last year the total jumped to 85 schools and airmail reports speeded up the statistics This year 112 schools are in line with only one or two major schools missing from the list and the bureau still operating on a shoestring has become the official statistician for the American College Publicity Association Cooke feels that already the bureau has brought some order from the chaos which was college statistics In conjunction with Joseph Petritz of Notre Dame a prime George Washington Licks Mountaineers MORGANTOWN Va Dec 2 (UP) A 13 to 0 defeat whose offensive and defensive work played a major part in clinching for the Reds their first pennant in 20 years joined the team last year Recently he made an unsuccessful bid for a job as sports broadcaster on an Eastern radio chain mover great forward steps have been made in the standardization of football statistics and a code worked out to take care of certain scoring puzzlers has received wide acceptance "Complete standardization hasn't been achieved yeb but things are getting progressively Cooke insists 1 Provide Forms At Cost For printing costs only Cooke provides members of the A A with press box forms for keeping statistics After brief practice with them it is possible to have all game statistics complete within 15 minutes after the final gun A machine used in census tabulations grinds out the mass of figures In some cases the figures are allowed to simmer on the machine until the end of the season when they are totaled For the weekly reports the cumulative totals are computed Cooke admits it's "all pretty The machine he says also is similar to those used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in classifying fingerprints Only Cooke classifies of teams and players A new use may develop for the bureau's figures East-West Shrine game officials at San Francisco have inquired into the possibility of scanning the figures as an aid to coaches who must pick in After these -sparkling jferform-ances many sports writers and followers were calling him a superhorse and another Man o' War Even the veteran Jim Fitzsimmons his trainer rated him better than either Gallant Fox or Omaha which he also trained for the master of Belair Stud Jamestown sire of Big John was devil himself when it came to speed As a 2-year-old he won six of his seven starts racing against some of the best horses in a decade including Twenty Grand Mate and Equipoise He won the Suburban Handicap at one mile at Arlington Park like a true champ running eight furlongs in 1:34 4-5 Jamestown was second to Equipoise when that great American speed demon set a world's record for the same distance In 1:34 2-5 Since the son of SL James he by Imp Ambassador IV traces to Hampton he Is the only horse from that once-pre-potent line to get a Kentucky Derby winner Johnstown comes from one of the stoutest producing families in the general stud book His dam La France Is a daughter of the great Imp Sir Gallahad III which represents the best male line in French history Daughters of the son of Imp Teddy and Plucky Liege she by Spearmint have made an amazing Success as producers: thus they have made him the leading broodmare sire of the country While In training as a 2-year-old La France injured her right atifle and failed to become a starter but she has been a aplendid producer The good mare produces grand fillies as well as fine colts This was realized when she foaled the imp Jacopo filly Jacola best of her sex in 1938 La France is from the good mare Flambctte a stakes-winner by Imp Durbar II and dam of Flambino dam of Omaha and Flares La France has had four foals to reach racing age and three of them have won Her fifth foal a full sister to Jacola arrived this year She will be bred to Man o' War next spring Lexington Rifle Club Holds Initial Shoot The newly organized Lexington Rifle Club held its initial shoot Friday night at the University of Kentucky armory Weekly matches are scheduled throughout the winter and inter-city matches with the Capital City Club of Frankfort and the Louisville Rifle Club are planned Membership is limited to members in good standing of the National Rifle Association Information may be obtained from Dale Gerstcr secretary at Transylvania College The results of shooting on the 50-foot range follow: By Howard Endicott At Arthur Hancock's renowned Claiborne Stud there now resides in peaceful retirement a 3-year-old horse which makes his debut as a sire next spring This promising young stallion ia William Woodward's Johnstown runner-up to Challedon for 1939's top 3-year-old honors Ever since announcement of his retirement from the turf was made Johnstown has been the center of an heated controversy among students of thoroughbreds as to whether he will be a success or a failure at stud It probably w'ould be much safer to wager with Lloyds of London at prosperous odds that the sun will shine or not shine tomorrow than to go out on a heavily burdened limb and predict the future of a stallion just embarking upon a stud career Thoroughbreds are said to be most precarious animals but whatever the ruling it has been proven constantly that the best assuredly breeds the best Breeders of blooded stock have many pet theories that have worked as many times as they have failed when put to practical use For example some breeders believe in horse's turf performance alone: others disregard performance and emphasize his pedigree Then there are horsemen who believe in extreme speed' while others prize stoutness and soundness Many turfmen breed prized mares to stallions which have a strong tail-male lines others prefer a stout tail-female line The breeding of champions is a game of hide and seek with breeders seeking the hidden constituents that go to make up a champion and praying that the progeny turns out to be a crack stakes performer The story of racing career is short bitter and also sweet It is the story of a very fast well-bred horse which won the majority of his races in two years of competition only to have an unsoundness force him into retirement Truer words were probably never spoken before than those of A Estes pedigree expert when he said a few years ago "There is much evidence that we are near the limits of speed And if you don't believe it make a big red mark on a barn door every time you read of a fast horse breaking down and see how long it takes to paint the Such was the case of Johnstown and many others before him Johnstown won 10 stakes and placed in three others winning $169315 In two seasons he started 21 times won 14 and was three times third As a 2-year-old he took the Babylon Handicap Richard Johnson Stakes Remsen Handicap Breeders Futurity and was third In the Hopeful Stakes and Junior Champion Stakes He was fourth In the Flash Stakes and the Futurity As a 3-ycar-oid he annexed the Paumonok Handicap Wood Memorial Stakes Kentucky Derby Withers Belmont and Dwyer stakes His most important victory no doubt was in the Kentucky Derby Short St Opp Courthouse Hollywood's Charley Einfeld is up in the air (and not in one of those Coast-to-Coast-ln-1 6-1 lours streamliners either) Lexington Col Phil Chinn named a hoss Charlie- infcld for him and Mervyn Le Roy has him pepped up to putting down a smacker of a bet the minute those first Kentucky Derby odds come out in February But Ken Kling predicts that Charlie-lnfeld will be the champion sprinter of 1940 and wails Einfeld the Derby ain't a sprint! (But Warner Brothers' Bryan Foy and Mark Hcllingcr recall that a sprinter Morvich won the 1922 Kentucky Derby so why not Charlielnfcld?)
