ENKOJI Sun Staff Writer A study will determine how much groundwater is in the Mojave River's vast basin, a measurement never before made.

New computer technology performs once nearly impossible mathematic computations to produce a water profile of the basin, something that has previously eluded water managers. "It's easy to find out how much water is going in and how much is going out," said Tom Irwin, a board director for the Mojave Water Agency, which has approved the study. "We know we're using too much," he said. But what water managers don't know is how much is sloshing around in reserve in the basin that stretches from the Victor Valley to Afton Canyon, midway between Barstow and Baker. "If there's a thousand years' worth down there, well, maybe we don't have to worry, but that's not likely," said Irwin.

"I'll be real happy, if that's the case, but I don't think it will be," said Jon Edson, the agency's general manager. From a water management standpoint, how much reserve the basin has is little more than a bit of trivia compared to the need to know the extent of water use and how much is replaced, Irwin said. Still, questions about the basin's capacity have long been a local concern. "Everyone seems to want to know when we will run out of water. Well, this will narrow it down," said Irwin.

The $81,000 study's real importance for agency will be in determining the basin's soil porosity, which will tell how well water soaks in. To reach a sort of water equilibrium, the Mojave Water Agency would like to replenish the basin with supplemental water purchased from the state. It means the amount of water used by the growing population will be replaced by natural and supplemental water. Where to add the supplemental water and how effective it will be is something the study should determine, Irwin said. Getting a handle on the water inventory will be important at least from a planning aspect, said John Cussen, president of California Geophysics Group Inc.

of Poway, hired to do the study. "It will tell you how many people you can have living out there," he said. To do the study, Cussen relies on gravity and magnetic field measurements calculated on a computer model to produce an outline of the basin's bottom. Recent technological advances in computer programming have made it possible to measure underground activity over such a large area, said Cussen. The same calculations done without a computer program would take 10 to 12 years, he said.

Geophysics will finish its study in nine months. County issues warning on 'jury scam' By RICHARD BROOKS Sun Staff Writer A flim-flam artist is claiming to represent the county jury commissioner's office and phoning people he hopes will reveal their bank account numbers. The best way to avoid being fleeced is to realize two things: "We won't ever call at night," Jury Commissioner Phillip Minor said "And we won't ever ask about your bank The problem surfaced last Friday when a Crestline woman reported a nighttime phone call from a man who said her husband hadn't returned a jury questionnaire. Posing as a jury commission worker, the man asked her the questions by phone and said he would mail a jury summons to her husband. "It sounds pretty reasonable, actually," Minor conceded.

"Except, in this county we have a onestep procedure," in which the questionnaire and summons are mailed in the same envelope. Then the caller tried to hook his victim. 'We pay $17 a Minor quoted the man as saying. "'And due to lost or stolen checks, we prefer to pay in direct deposit to his bank for his jury duty. Therefore, could you tell me the name of his bank and what his account number The ruse failed.

Suspicious of that approach, the woman replied she wouldn't reveal that information over the phone. Minor said he would do just about the same thing if he had received the call: "Try to get whatever information I could and refuse to tell them anything," then call the police.
