are wasteful hey lire faster than they used to but ti i 7 should do so for this is a fast age And the credit system Is a great curse of a age The stats government is man zed property so none of our subtreasury heme was touched upon and its weaknesses pointed out Such a project was VVX declared impracticable But the following rules were rocommended Keep out of debt Plant less cotton Raise more hogs and grain Induce capital to come to Texas Regulate freight charges And stick with the Demooratio party In nn effort to tear down the robber tariff The speakers effort was loudly cheered at its close Gen Cameron again took occasion to address the people and proposed a platform upon which adherents to all political parties could stand the gist of whioh was progress development of resources and enoouragement of home enterprise He struck the key note The people dispersed to gather at the tables where the barbeoued meats were spread after which Hon Andrews delivered an address His main point was to show the farmer how he lost money by the fact that all he produces must be sent North to be made up into shape for use So with his cotton so with his stock The farmers best chance to secure cash is to make bis produce into pork and bring It to Fort Worth BAW AND COOKED The Barbecue Dispatched The Packcryuml Ynrils Inspected East of the stock yards hotel the barbecue was prepared There the trenches were located and there a half dozen skilled barbecue cooks were engaged over Iron grates preparing beef pork mutton and game Near by were a half dozen long tables running parallel with each other where when the hour came tho barbecue was placed And heavy spread It was Iloslde the barbecued meat there was sausages of all kinds from the paokery and corned beef and poultry cut no small figure There was ac abundanro for everybody although thoro was suoh a large crowd The barbecue was not over in a few minutes It lasted from about 1230 till 430 People were continually arriving and leaving nnd eaoh one was supplied with the freshest piece of meat on tho market Leaving the tables the visitors sought the packing house which was thrown open from the Sticking room on the top lloor to the packery under the ground Everything was made pleasant for the strangers and oflicials of the company from Presidunt John noxie down to the humblest errand boy vied with each other in making tbiu comfortable Amazement was depicted upon every face that inspected the building In one lloor the slaughtering of hogs was seen where blood llowed like water and porkers were heard to scream almost after they wero salted down so quickly were they polished off In another room sausagemaking of all kinds was seen Further on the chopping of the meat into Us different marketable shapes was witnessed Then the packing room was arrived at where hundreds of square teet of flooring was found covered four feet deep with neatly laid away and salted pork Aud the lardroom was Inspected nnd barrel after barrel of this valuable hog product was found ready for the market And Btill further tho stranger came to the shipping department where he found fresh pork being placed in solid refrigerator boxes which Instead of the old labels which have become eyesores to the peoplo of Texas bore these words Rktuhv to the Fout Worth Packing House Foiit Worth Tkx The state of the Fort Worth market for hogs was of course matter of leading interest to the farmers and the information they gained in response to inquiries on that point was of a sort calculated to please them as well ns to give them a good Impression of Fort Worth During the day wagon after wagon loaded with bogs arrived and unloaded nt the yards Altogether C42 head of hogs were brought In This represents at least 150 wagon loads The prices paid yesterday ranged between S340 aud 5375 per hundred weight It is very easy to figure that there was at least S5000 paid out yesterday for livo hogs in Fort Worth This is a good average of the business done sinoe the paokery commenced There was much to Interest the strangers nt the stockyards and paokery Until 4 oclock the visitors strolled about At the hour named tho scene of interest was transferred to the Stockyards hotel In the rotunda a troupe of colored musicians was brought and to the tune ot fancifully tickled strings the merry dance was inaugurated The sport was lead by Col John Hoxio himself who with the irrepressible Louis Do Mouche scraped the floor in au old time Aircinia breakdown terpsichorean exhibition in which both gentlemen did themselves credit and greatly entertained the spectators who crowded around them on the floor aud cheered them on from the galleries above So the fun went on and so the day closed It was an event in the development of Fort Worth The farmers camo and saw for themselves what bad been done and learned how they might take advantage of it Col John Hoxio has good reason to be proud of the affair Twas he Alliance of America believing that obedience and veneration for the laws of God is the conservlnir and saving force of the human government we do hereby respectfully request that the directors of the of tho national executive committee submitted his annual report of the work aooom plished by that body during the past year Tho report recommended reduction of salaries of all national otlicers nnd the removal from Washiuston City of the National Alliance presidents office inasmuch as the retention of it there entails oxpense not commensurate with its usefulness After adjournment of the forenoon session McCune gave the Associated Press representative the following report of his utlernnces upon the third party question 1 told the delegates that the people in the Southern states were not prepared to embark In a third party movement that tbey had not elected delegates to this convention that the people of some Western aud Northwestern states hud already embarked in the movement and considered that the prosperity of the order demanded some action of that kind to sustain them in their efforts In this emergency there was great necessity for conservatism and we should not forcet we were representing the people at home and not our own likes and dislikes I recommouded a compromise that would carry out tho end sought to be achieved by the West and North if it met the approval of the South that the convention be called to meet in February 1892 that convention to be composed of delegates of associations of producers and that the next annual session of the supreme council elect delegates to reprepresent this order in that convention I sustained this by saying that It not commit the people but provided means whereby they could express themselves on this great question through their subordinate couuty und state orlgauizations during the coming year When the great convention meets enil delegates will come therewith authority and instructions from their people If their people decide in favor of independent party action it will prevail if not the cause will still be benefited by the conference and there will be a better understanding of the objects which labor organizations are seeking to achieve This Is a basis of all I recommended but it has taken wonderful hold upon the man and it will satisfy both sides col Livingstons oriNiON In conversation with an Associated press repiesentatlve Col Livingston said in reply to the question as to the probable effect on the politics ot the country It the Alliance polioy was adopted as outlined by Dr Macune It cant fail to have marked effect It would commit the Alliance of the South almost solidly against a third party Before February 1892 we shall bare cbanoe to sea which one of the leading polltloal parties will show a willingness to aocede our demands There is nothing new In the principles of the Alliance platform except the circumstances nnd condition which have brought It into exlattnoe Clay Calhoun and Webster stood In it and eren Charles Sumner was not ver far off from It If neither party listens to us then it will be time for us to act Independently We bare ou disposition to break down other polit ical societies but relief must come through some political channel Do you think there Is any prospect of the Republican party fnlllng Into line and espousing the cause of the Alliance I cannot say that 1 doDo you think the Democratio party of the South would join the Southern Democrats on the Alliance platform Ido And I think more and make the predlotion that the Democratio national convention ot 1392 will adopt the Alliance St Louis platform in toto HOSTILE ROSEBUDS They Sleep With Ono Eye on Their Gnn Iho Have All the Beef Tbey Want an are Living nigh Fine Ridge Agency Dec 5 The situation has not Callers and OSiceSeekers Progress ot the Alamo 3Ionnmenc The Sam Iiallroad Kntha lmtlo Over the Worlds Fair The Llano Komi Special to the Gazette Austin Tex Dec 4 Excavation for the Alamo monument on the capltol grounds has begun A good deal of tho material for the construction ot the monument 13 already on the ground and the balance will be brought as fast as circumstances admit When the work of exenvnting has reached solid rock foot or two beneath the surfaco tho opening will bo filled with a mixture of broken granite sand and cement on which the superstructure will stand The monument proper to be built of Texas granite will be twentyseven feet hich and will be surmounted by a bronze military statue eight feet in height It will stand directly in front ot the oapi tolofew feet to the right of the paved walk leading up to the main entrance to tho building and when completed will doubtless present quite an imposing appearance There are those who complain of the site as an unsuitable one being in front of and olose to the capitol whioh in Its mnssiveness and stupendous proportions overshadows it so completely There maybe something In this objection but it is difficult to see where else the monument could be placed so as to secure conspicuousness It must be there or out of sight altogether and it would never do to ereot It lu a corner or hide it away where the stranger would require tho services of a policeman to llnd It Perhaps If a site for it wero found elsewhero we 6hould hear louder objections still The objeotor like the poor is always with us and like a bad penny Is not to be got rid of A beautiful park centrally located in the city would perhaps furnish a ore eligible site for monument but where Is the park When Austin thanks to her great dam shall become a city of one or two hundred thousand people with nil the modern Improvements and adornments belonging thereto such as elegant avenues boulevards and parks she will not be at a loss for suitable npd proper sights for bur monuments In the meantime thu fastidious must wnit and consent to chain down their highfnlution Ward McAllis ter notions of propriety and Iltuess Austins Four Hundred Is yet in the em bryonio state and her Central and Tuxedo parks are figments only of tho brain or at least creations of the moro or less distant future The Alamo mouument was designed nnd will be constructed by James Clark Co of Louisville Kentucky and will cost the state the sum of 14 500 The furnishing of the stone was let under a subcontract to the Texas Granite company of Burnet whioh company owing to unavailable delays aud vexations has been somowhat delayed in getting the material on tho grouud If work could have begun sooucr ns was intended the monument would have been completed by the first of tho year But under the terms of tho contract the company has until Mnroh 1 to complete the work and unless the unexpected happens will easily do so The city is having some trouble and vexatious delay in the bulling of the projected railroad out to the site of the dam The distance is between three nnd four milesand the route lay partly through the city Mr George Brackenridge of San Antonio agreed to build the road and actually begun work some weeks neo Ho soon encountered obstacles however that caused him to call a halt for a timo The route surveyed lay through tho property of private owners Inside the corporate limits who raised a variety of objections to the road Some held that it would greatly damage their property and asked that it be run elsewhere anywhere so that it missed them All were anxious for the road but no one oared to bavo it run close to bis premises Others demand what is considered extravagant sums for right of way through their ground and so it goes A day or two ngo Mr Brackenridge sent communication to the city council offering to surrender his franchise if the citv would reimburse him for the work done on the road That is the muddle into whioh things have got The city depends on Mr Brackenridge to build the road and has so far granted him everything in its power everything in fact that he asked and yet the work drags It now has a committee at work ascertaining the cost of the right of way to the corporate limits and on the principle that beggars cannot be choosers It may have to either purchase the risht of way or condemn the same In regular form at its own expense so that the building of tho road may proceed The road is an absolute necessity in hauling material to the dam nnd must be built if tho dam is to go ahead Indeed the city is bound by its contruct with Mr Corrigan to furnish blm transportation for his material and must therefore by book or crook construct the road let whosoever must bo hurt by it The usual obstacles and difficulties are thrown in its way but they will be brushed aside and the car of progress or the iron horse will be allowed to go snorting on his way Mrs Ryan one of the lady commissioners from Texas to the Columbian fair has returned to Austin overflowing with enthusiasm over tha great fair and the important figuro which Texas must make thereat when the doors shall bo thrown open to the world She was delignted with the manner In which the lady commissioners were received and entertained in Chicago and says that while no great amount of business was or oould be done by the ladies yet the talent and capaoity for it was clearly demonstrated The lady commissioners organized chose such officers as were needed and appointed committees They will probably ba called together again In April provided congress makes the necessary appropriation for paying their salaries In the meantime they will exert their individual energies at home urging their states to provide the best possible exhibits for the fair Mrs Ryan Is exceedingly anxious that the Texas legislaturetlo the handsome thing in aiding the state to furnish an exhibit that will do her credit at the fair To that end she will from now on
