Pass Honors Around A young woman's totter in The Editor's Mail column the tit her day demanded why ships always are christened by daughters of wealthy families. Why not give the working girl a chance at this coveted honor, the writer asked.

While the complaint is probably not based entirely on facts, there is something to this young woman's contention. The Times suggests to managers of Tacoma yards that tho appointment of at least half the launching queens be delegated to the workmen who build those vessels. i Why not, for instance, let the gang of riveters or caulkei-s or the ship carpenter who makes the best record on some certain hull tie permitted the honor of naming his daughter, or whoever else he should choose, to usher the sea bride to her groom? The inducement to set new records might be even greater than the fattest of money bonuses. Anyhow, the innovation would be appreciated by the lucky girls who won the honors. Now It's Steel "From now on," says a Washington announcement, "not one onset of steel wil go for any but war purposes." This is an unavoidable war policy that will certainly hit "business as usual," especially the very important automobile business, and, besides, be felt in every household. It is a good time to look your possessions over and observe to what extent steel enters into them. Tlie re are the auto, the stove, the sewing machine, the tubs, pots aud tools tremendous lot of things that become more precious under the national necessity to conserve steeL Clearly, a period has been reached when it is up to the individual to save steel, as he has wheat, meat and fuel.

The plans for conservation of steel are really very similar to those for conservation of food sparingly and waste none at all. "This is the time when I get busy learning sonicthing about fanning," Miss Mary is quoted as saying.

Forthwith she enrolls as a student at Cornell for a short term course in agriculture. "Not enough men to work our farm (in Vermont) so I'm going to help," she explained. I know a woman whore jewel case is full of beautiful diamonds and pearls because every time her husband has done anything of which he is ashamed he has taken this way of aaklng forgiveness.

"In this case a woman shares the guilt quite as much as the 'fence' that receives the stolen goods," I told Donna Tenny, the other day when we were talking over thla phase of married life. (You see, little book. Donna I and I. being widows, can discusal marriage more disinterestedly and calmly than when we were wires.) Donna, In her sensible way, took up the cause of women, even the women who allowed themselves to be bought. BATTERIES KEPT DRY The Willard factory Is now able to ship all batteries dry, and Its representatives can keep them in condition until ready for use, thru the Installation of the new Willard thread rubber "These new thread rubber separators are a great Improvement in batteries." said It J. Olinger, manager of the Puget Sound Battery company, Willard distributor, "as we can keep a battery dry on the shelf for 20 ears, if necessary, and It wil, still in as good condition as when it was shipped from the factory. "Heretofore it was necessary to put the charging solution in a battery to keep the separation moist, and this made it impossible for any battery dealer to give his customers an absolutely new battery." REPAIRS FEATURE With additional help, H. B. McKldowney of McKldowney's garage, is prepared to take care of all the Ford cars brought in.

The McKldowney garage is making a feature of repair work. All makes and models of cars are handled by specialists. The new battery plant at the garage Is now in working order. Batteries are inspected and repaired or recharged by men long in the battery business. Mr.

Mr Rldowney has added a tire changing machine lo his equipment and racks for car washing are modeled after the newest improvements for cleaning cars. MAKING USE OF SEDANS Motorists are turning more and more to the use of the sedan type of car for all seasons of tbe year, according to A. F. Blangy, speaking for the Ford dealers in Tacoma. "Heretofore the sale of Sedans was restricted almost exclusively to the winter season and even tbt demand was a comparatively small one and no one ever thought of trying to sell one in summer.

Thru a strenuous sales and advertising campaign the people are bej coming educated to the yeararound use of this type of car. It Ms almost as easy to sell Ford Sedans as it is touring cars because the convertibility of the car combines the good feature of both types." ASK THEM "If the motorist has a question about what is right in accessories and is unable to answer it, we will be glad to give the proper answer say Kennedy Schnack, dealers in motor car supplies. They declare that this Is the lime of year to prepare the car for the outings, and that they have everything that Is required. "We have the stock and feel sure we have everything the motorist of 1918 will demand, and a large stock assures a steady supply," says Schnack. GOING GOOD "Altho we have had this line only three weeks, we have closed three deals and have a number of prospective buyers for the new Chalmers models." says Fred Wever, president of the Wever Motor Car company, Chalmers distributor.
