has lived all her life and there through a lighted upstairs window you see her typing away at an old manual machine in her bedroom She's been at it there for 61 years producing and reproducing the sounds and sights of her neighbors and her region in enchanting novels and short stories It all seems so simple even though you know you are in the presence of a great writer Miss Welty admits to using "many a thing I've overheard" and cherishes the phrase she heard from someone who was asked whether he liked spoon bread: "1 have a gnawing and a craving for it" It is rather startling to find that even at her age and with an international reputation she should feel exposed and vulnerable every time she ships a story to her publishers In baseball (6:30 on channels 4 and 13) the Kansas City Royals take the field against the Baltimore Orioles In the series Tony's coarse poker buddies use living room on the (7 on channels 2 9 and 49) and her girlfriend finds one of them attractive (7 on American League West but the baseball team has made a winner out of the radio station that carries it For the first time in seven years KMBZ-AM has taken first place among Kansas City stations Adult contemporary station KLSI-FM rejoined the area's top 10 radio stations finishing in a tie for seventh It replaced soul rock station KPRS-FM which was tied for eighth place last winter The listenership figures were compiled by the Arbitron Ratings Co for April May and June The figures known as Arbitrends are expected to be the same as the quarterly Arbitron report that will be issued later this week Listenership ratings are based on the number of listeners 12 and older and the amount of time each spends with the station The top 10 stations and their ratings: KMBZ-AM 97 (46 last winter 46 a year ago) The Royals have always been magic for KMBZ The station recorded its best rating since April-May 1980 when it also was carrying the Royals To take full advantage of the situation KMBZ must introduce Royals fans to other parts of its radio schedule KYYS-FM 86 (72 68) The album-oriented rock station registered the best ratings it has received since fall 1983 Scott Jameson hired as program director earlier this year helped make the station more appealing by cleaning up some of the clutter) WDAF-AM 85 (116 107) his is only the second time in early seven years that country Nation WDAF finished out of first place The other time was in spring 1984 Then as now the station most likely suffered from temporary defections by Royals fans It's far too early to push the panic button KFKF-FM 79 (81 54) Although it slipped a notch from the rating it received earlier this year the country station did better than in any previous spring since it changed its call letters about five years ago F'urther it has narrowed the gap between it and competitor WDAF to the smallest margin ever KMBR-FM 78 (81 85) Since fall 1983 when it became Kansas City's only beautiful music station KMBR has never been lower than 70 or higher than 98 Some things just don't seem to change KBEQ-FM 75 (90 71) The bad news is that this contemporary hits station slipped from second to sixth place The good news is that it did better this spring than it did the year before The first summer radio ratings in Kansas City history are under way and KBEQ should benefit from an increase in youthful listeners KLSI-FM 60 (35 60 Things had begun looking bleak at KLvSI With one exception the ratings had declined in each survey taken since winter 1984 The huge jump in listeners this spring reflects well on changes in the on-air sound fashioned by Bill Bailey who became program director earlv this year KUDL-FM 6 0 (52 64) It was a good spring for adult contemporary stations Although the increase at Kl'DL was not as remarkable as the one at competitor KLSI it served to reverse a short winter slump Moreover program director Dene Hallam who has resigned effective Aug 15 will leave on a high note KCFX-FM 59 (4 8 1 8) An astounding success story this classic rock station registered its highest ratings ever In doing so it more than tripled its listener-ship in a year That is a tough act to follow KCMO-AM 4 9 (54 68) The loss of Royals baseball has cost the station dearly As a result KCMO recieved its worst rating in six years That not great news for Gannett Broadcasting which is to take over news-talk KCMO and sister station KBKC-FM later this month Other rating results KBKC-FM 3 5 (3 3 3 8) KPRS-FM 3 5 4 8 4 7) KZZC-FM 3 4 (35 4 6) and WHB-AM 2 9 (4 23 2) Mr Jones said there was a chance" that Channel 5 would appeal the decision in an attempt to force Channel 62 to drop the "KZKC" designation He said the opinion by Judge Stevens failed to address testimony that the call letters KCTV and KZKC were rhythmically and phonetically similar Dan Ross a lawyer for Channel 62 said the decision would have little effect on the station He said some materials will have to be changed to drop the "TV" designation but "as a practical matter it was not used all that Also contributing to this story was Joe Henderson said his station also had offered on 10 occasions to drop the part of its call letters only question is how Phil Jones can justify spending $200000 in legal expenses for something to which we had already Mr Friedheim said Mr Jones said that Channel 62 had twice agreed to refrain from using in its call letters they didn't live up to it they said they were going to do something twice and they didn't do He said a court order was needed to make sure Channel 62 didn go back on its word again Referring to the victory claimed by Channel 62 Mr Jones said: If you think you've done something else wrong and you got away with it you might think of it as a victory During the trial which was held last month Channel 5 called several witnesses who testified that the two call letters were similar enough to be confusing "The testimony was undisputed that television viewers do not use a high degree of care in distinguishing call letters" Judge Stevens said "Primarily viewers refer to stations by their channel numbers As a result similar call letters are confusing to the average television viewer By Barry Garron The Star TV-radio critic A federal court ruled today that KZKC-TV Channel 62 no longer may use to identify itself but may continue to refer to itself as simpUF'KZKC" TturHiecision was made in response to a lawsuit filed by KCTV-TV Channel 5 which alleged that the call letters used by Channel 62 could too easily be confused with its own call letters In his decision Judge Joseph Stevens Jr said: "While the court finds that the defendant did not intend to create confusion in adopting its call letters the court finds the KZKC-TV station manager did seek to capitilize on the publicity created by the subsequent controversy with the He gave Channel 62 until Aug 20 to make the change Both sides claimed victory We got the main point done" said Phil Jones Channel 5 general manager "We consider it a total victory We re thrilled" said Page Nader who handles news and public affairs for-Channel 62 We had offered to settle with Channel 5 by paying them up to $20000" said Steve Friedheim Channel 62 general manager He GEORGIA ENGEL Georgette on the Mary Tyler Moore show Emmy snafu rewards wrong soap writers From The Star press services The writers of
