True. And there is no happy family circle around a table spread with uninviting, ill-seasoned, unappetizing meals. The family goes there simply because all must eat-and leaves with bad humor and indigestion.

William Barry of Mile, the CGnnty Hot-ticultturel Committee, pretested: the follow inj: Gentlemen: In nt laat report I endear ored to itire yon a clear statement as to tner tonrse pursaea tb attempt to destroy Ifce apricot scale on fruit trees ia Wathlag- ton 'township. 1 The results are not as satis. factory as we expected, yet it has done an tnmenae amount of good, as could be seen by the appcarnoa -of ths Jruit tbia year compared with that of last. 'in the case of my own fruit I found that the black fenana that accompanies tbe scale, and which leaves the fruit in a black and unseemly condition, was not present this year, except ia a rery few instances, last year it wa quite tbe reverse, as had to wash, my fruit that I cut for dry ice and a ftrfadeal that I shipped to the cannery.

"There is no doubt that the excessive tains last winter and spring, tended to neutralize the effect of the washes, it being al ruost imposuble to get sufficient dry weather to a'low them to do their work thoroughly. There la no doubt that a determined effort will be made to destrov che cale this year as soon as tbe lea yes tall. Several orcuardiate ere disposed toobange the chemical this year and as soon as I can ascertain what they are. I will make it known in inv next report. "In examining orchards tbe second time this snmiuer, I find that the worst localities for scale are Nile, Centerville, Irvington end down the aouih bank of the Alameda Creek to within ore mile of Alvarado. On the north site (excepting in the im me Mate vicinity of Nile) it is not to be found from Decoto to Alvacado. East of ilea, up the Alameda Creek, or in the neigbborLood of bunol, or np the La Costa some miles above Bunol. I failed to find ny.

In Murray township, ia the neighborhood of Pleas-auton and from there to Ltvermore, I could find no trace of it. I also examined some orchards on the-Dnblio road from Pleasao-ton, with tbe same result, consequently' I am prepared td report a clean bin tor Murray township as far as I could ascertain. Yet as they have been shipping frnit from the different stations to ban Francisco and their boxes coming in contact with those from infected districts. I would suggest that all 2 boxes receive a thorough cleaning a a preventative and to save the outlay of many dollars in the future. Before my next report reaches you, I intend taking another trip into Murray township, in order to ascertsin if any youn1 scale have made their appesranee.
