WEDNESDAY, May 11, 1938 The Sun C3 Rim AL title hopes end with forfeiture Hesperia stays in thick of race By STEVE RACE Special to The Sun By CHUCK HICKEY Special to The Sun the Rim coaches to be quiet. Rim coach Dan Drake said no one on his staff yelled at the homeplate umpire. However, an unidentified man wearing a Rim cap continued to berate the umpire, prompting McKeon to tell him to "Shut your damn mouth!" When the man continued he was told to get out of the area or the game would be forfited in 30 minutes. Presumably, McKeon meant 30 seconds. A Her the umpire looked around and spotted the man, he declared the game over.

Drake immediately followed McKeon to the Victor Valley side of the field. "How can you forfeit?" Drake asked. "This is a potential game for first place and you're going to forfeit? I understand why you called it, but you are going to take it away from the kids." McKeon was not impressed by the discussion and said, "That is a weak excuse." After the game, Drake felt he couldn't protest the call which Victor coach Joe Vargas agreed with. "It's just a judgement call; You can't protest it." While the game itself was going on, fans were. treated to a 90-degree afternoon perfect weather to get the hitters and arguments heated up.

The Jackrabbits wasted little time getting; started. They scored three runs in the first followed -by two more in the second to jump out to a 5-0 lead. With the 'Rabbits leading 6-3 in the fourth, the Scots scored four times to take a 7-6 lead. The final two runs of the inning came home on a popup by right fielder Andy King that dropped behind catcher Gilbert Lopez. "(Lopez) did everything right, but back up like he should have," said Vargas.

If that half of the inning sounded weird, just imagine the bottom of the fifth as Victor sent 15 batters to the plate scoring 10 runs on eight hits and five walks. "A lot of the runs were due to walks. It was just a matter of putting things together," said Vargas. "That made me feel good. I knew all year long that we had that capability." Victor Valley's Iti-hit, ltt-run attack was fueled by second baseman Larry Perry's three hits and loll fielder Ike Jackson's two triples.

VICTOR VILLE The San Andreas League baseball game between Victor Valley and Rim of the World high schools looked like a battle to the finish. As it turned out, the finish came sooner than expected. Umpire Jack McKeon ordered a Rim of the World forfeit with Victor Valley leading 16-10 in the sixth inning of a game that featured 29 hits, including five triples. The victory gave the Jackrabbits a 6-7 league record and evened their overall mark at 11-11, while Rim slipped to 7-6 and 12-11 and fell out of contention for the SAL title. The beginning of the end came with two outs in the Victor Valley half of the sixth when Jayven Miller drew the ninth walk from Rim's pitching staff.

McKeon heard someone shout at him and told Yucaipa grabs SAL lead with win over Barstow PREP BASEBALL SAN BERNAR DINO After the first two weeks of San Andreas League play, the Hesperia High School baseball team owned a 5-0 record and looked as if it would run away with the title. But since then, the Scorpions had won only two of seven games and were in jeopardy of missing the playoffs. However, on Tuesday afternoon, Hesperia came up with a key victory when it scored a run in the sixth inning and held on to down first-place Cajon 3-2 at the Cowboys' field. The win improved the Scorpions' record to 8-5 in the SAL and 13-10 overall. Hesperia gained a second-place tie with Cajon, which dropped to 8-5 in league and 14-9 overall.

The Scorpions play High Desert rival Victor Valley in their regular-season finale on Friday and would clinch a CIF 3A playoff spot with a win. "This is a big win for us," said Hesperia coach Bobby Gradillas. "We knew (the game) was going to be close, but our pitchers worked out of some jams and that helped us win it." With two outs in the sixth, Hesperia senior catcher Richard Jara walked for the third time in the game and went to second when senior shortstop Tom Boulware also walked. Jara eventually scored when senior right fielder Scott Crawford (2-for-4) lined a single into right field to break a 2-2 tie. Cajon went out 1-2-3 in the sixth, and in the seventh, the Cowboys squandered a leadoff walk to third baseman Tim Watt, who stole second with one out.

It was the fourth loss in seven league home games for Cajon, which couldn't come up with a timely hit, leaving seven runners on base, including five in scoring position. "We didn't capitalize on our opportunities to score," said Cajon coach Bill Mierzwik. "Hopefully we can bounce back against Bar-stow (Friday). If we don't win, I'm afraid we'll be left out of the playoffs." The Hesperia pitching duo of freshman David Munoz and senior Ed Hoffman combined to pitch a three-hitter, although they did have to survive eight walks. Hoffman replaced Munoz in the fourth inning and gave up a bases-loaded walk to pinch hitter Derek Estes and an RBI single to junior second baseman Gilbert Marquez as Cajon erased a 2-0 deficit.

From then on Hoffman used his curve ball to perfection in retiring eight of the last 10 batters he faced. He gave up no hits and walked two in that span. Hoffman duplicated Crawford's 2-for-4 performance with doubles in the first and third innings to lead the seven-hit Hesperia attack. Hesperia opened a 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to an RBI single by Munoz and a run-producing groundout by Boulware.
