The Kansas City Star Sunday November 3 1985 Page 51 A Father’s 6-year search continues Daughter of KCK man disappeared in St Joseph By Rick Aim staff writer Six years one month and 23 days ago Micki Jo West disappeared somewhere between her St Joseph home and a nearby bus stop while on her way to work A nurses aide who was living with her mother and stepfather after her own divorce the 19-year-old left behind all her clothes personal items and a paycheck for more than $500 Detective Jim Wright of the St Joseph Police Department who has been on the case from the beginning believes she almost certainly was murdered and her body dumped somewhere in the thousands of acres of woods near the city A fresh lead hasn’t developed for about two years ‘ I’ve just run into a brick wall" said Detective Wright a veteran police officer He's losing hope Hope is all that Arden Locke has— hope that his daughter or her body will be found The Kansas City Kan grocery store meatcutter recently doubled to $10000 his longstanding reward offer from his personal savings for any information leading to Micki Jo’s whereabouts He and his son Mike 24 of St Joseph have been traveling around the region the past few weeks tacking up on every available bulletin board postcards with Micki Jo’s picture the reward offer and Detective Wright’s telephone number “I’m convinced that she’s not alive" Mr Locke said in an interview “I’m a Christian and Micki Jo was a Christian I have that peace that I know she is taken care of now But at the same time I would like to find her and give her a decent burial” For Detective Wright the case got personal years ago He had vowed to solve the riddle of Micki Jo’s disappearance before he retires in two years “We’ve got a girl that didn’t deserve to get murdered and some running the streets" he said That person “is smarter than I am or at least he thinks he is- “I take this case as a real personal vendetta You don’t know how many nights I’ve lain there at night and couldn’t get to sleep" The detective said Micki Jo’s ex-husband cooperated in the investigation and was cleared as a suspect When she disappeared Micki Jo was caught up in another family’s domestic troubles She had been threatened at least once by the husband police said and was afraid of him She carried a hammer in her purse for protection Acknowledging that some circumstantial evidence suggests Micki Jo could have had contact with that man— a former St Joseph police officer— the day she disappeared Detective Wright concludes that the facts add up to only a coincidence The detective said the former officer’s estranged wife and young son had been in a Kansas motel near St Joseph for several days hiding from him The man who had been searching for them allegedly threatened Micki Jo shortly before she disappeared because she was one of a handful of people who knew where his wife and son had gone police and Mr Locke said Within hours after Micki Jo disappeared the man showed up at the motel broke into his wife’s room and forced her and the child to leave with him police said Within a year he moved to another state Said Detective Wright “The polygraph test showed he knew nothing about (the death)” Her ex-husband also passed a police lie detector test Lacking any evidence against either both were dropped long ago as suspects Detective Wright said Other potential suspects were tracked and investigated and they also passed lie tests Mr Locke 46 a Kansas City Kan reserve police officer for about 10 years has investigated his daughter's case at least as intently as Detective Wright He doesn't hide his criticism of the St Joseph Police Department's investigation He believes police bungled the investigation and suggests they may be covering up for his daughter’s murderer a charge the police heatedly deny Arden Locke holds a photo of his daughter Micki Jo West who was 19 when she disappeared in St Joseph six years ago Although there have been few clues Mr Locke has not given up hope that he will find out wha t happened to her (staff photo by Jan Housewerth) “Mr Locke has been riding (us)” Detective Wright said “No matter how hard we’ve worked he still knocks us I can understand his feelings about his missing daughter I sympathize with him I’d feel the same way But he doesn't know what really goes on” Not leaving it to the police Mr Locke has followed obscure leads to Nebraska and California He’s worked with psychics But he concedes like Detective Wright 'Tve just run out of leads to follow” The reward offer remains his best hope that somebody who knows something anything will step forward he said “I just want to find my daughter” A stroll in the sky A Soviet cosmonaut became the first man to leave an orbiting spacecraft and float in space in 1965 Democrats pushed to counter GOP gains By The Associated Press Poplar Bluff Mo— Rep Ike Skelton urged fellow Democrats Saturday to shed the party’s
