might have thought that Mr set dragged on too long the audience get enough of its slightly built teen idol with the poofy blond hair Almost all the songs lasted longer than their recorded versions with Mr Jones extending his instrumental solos and urging on the crowd with joyous outbursts of and Such light and airy hits as in One Can Only Get Better" and into Action" poured forth let anyone take away your dreams your ideals and your he said as an introduction to into Action He also performed a rousing version of to Get to Know You which had the crowd singing out the word in the chorus with dizzying vigor thing he seems Indeed Walter speaks three languages fluently can drive like a Grand Prix pro when the situation warrants it and knows Europe like the back of his hand The biggest revelation though is that Walter was at one time a top CIA agent and that the disappearance of Donna is an act of revenge by his old enemies Now all the fa-ther-and-son team has to do is locate one kidnapped woman somewhere in Europe effectively mixes suspense with modest insights into parentchild relationships Mr Hackman seems to have been born for this an absolutely nondescript individual who can burn with intensity when the situation calls for it Mr Dillon seems to be putting the obnoxious punks of his early roles behind him for a somewhat more complex and satisfying characterization Howard Berk and Don Petersen is a spy yam with a difference Indeed for the first 20 minutes we be sure a spy yarn at all It opens in Dallas where a dull-as-dirt lumberyard operator named Walter Lloyd (Gene Hackman) lives with his wife Donna (Gayle Hunnicutt) and teen-age son Chris (Matt Dillon) Father and son have much in Chris has dropped out of college in favor of race car driving (much to irritation) and really got much time for a father figure who never drives above 30 miles per hour Nevertheless they make a showing of unity in order to send Mom off on a tour of Europe on a positive note A week later they receive word that she has disappeared They catch the next flight to Paris where the adventure begins and where Chris starts learning that his old man every great music and awfully nice guy in performance Friday he pranced from one end of the Memorial Hall stage to the other while touching outreached hands (will they ever be washed again?) and vocalizing into his wireless microphone headset During a sprightly rendition of one of several encores the singer allowed one young woman to join him on stage He positioned her hand on the key of a synthesizer and encouraged her to play along as he continued to bang out the song on other high-tech instruments She squander the moment raising her free hand in triumph and giving a new meaning to the term the Antioch Bannister Square Blue Ridge East Plaza Ranch Mart and Springs South theaters Produced by Richard Zanuck and David Brown written by Howard Berk and Don Petersen directed by Arthur Penn and released by Warner Bros with the following principal players Gene Hackman Matt Dillon Josef Sommer Gayle Hunnicutt is a solidly satisfying thriller with a twist that should reverse the flagging fortunes of its director Arthur Penn Mr Penn has spent the last 20 years trying to top his own and may not be that sort of classic it should at the very least prove a commercial success Based on a screenplay by It was 11:20 pm by the time Howard Jones plinkra the last note on his banks of synthesizers and assorted electronic gadgetry Friday night at Memorial Hall But outside the sight of all those mothers and fathers waiting in parked cars to dutifully take their children home made it seem more like 3:15 in front the school yard After playing two hours and 20 minutes of positive-thinking pop music Mr Jones had left about 2000 of his adoring and mostly female teen-age fans with something to talk about at their real schools for some time to come gorgeous and he does Country and rock original songs that caught the somewhat reluctant crowd of 325 off guard before finally finding its mark Lead singer Brian English set a frenetic pace for his four-piece band He hunched over his microphone and belted out tunes ranging from the sprightly cover of a Whole Lot to more than a dozen fiery up-tempo originals that primed the audience for what was to come Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper filled the middle ground of the five-hour musical marathon with a unique if somewhat disorganized 40-minute set of original humor tunes ranging from the straightforward Hate to "Rockin' a lengthy diatribe with lyrics to offend even the most secular of souls Despite the frequently erratic nature of several of the individual performers including Mr Nixon and the two guitarists taken as a whole
