Presenters in Channel 62 creates a stir with movies In the past people in the office would talk about Alexis or JR or the latest plots from "Hill or "St No more Even in November when ABC CBS and NBC trot out their hottest hits and mini-series there is less talk about what is on the networks than what is on KZKC-TV Channel 62 Especially at 7 pm That is when the station broadcasts its prime-time movie Movies on television are nothing new Westerns dramas comedies and musicals have been on TV for years But for the most part all of the people in them were wearing clothes Channel 62 has caused a stir because every once in a while it shows movies with men and women without clothes Up until recently the only way you could see movies of actors rubbing their bodies together was by tuning into a cable channel such as HBO or Showtime or Cinemax So if your taste in cinema extended to uncut unedited R-rated movies you had to pay about $10 a month for a premium channel in addition to the basic cable subscription service Now along comes Channel the poor cable channel And along came the office discussion's and even calls to the TV-Radio critic On Nov 4 Channel 62 showed Is a Many Splendored A week later the station showed a movie that more graphically depicted splendors The calls began to trickle in Monday Channel 62 showed a movie that reveals more of Barbara Her-shey than merely her acting skills Also there was dialogue you are not likely to hear in Sunday school Again a few callers complained Channel 62 has a policy that except for explicit sexual acts no film will be cut That has made some viewers angry Those movies are immoral filth one man said Yes he said the station ran a disclaimer warning that the movie may not be suitable for children He said he watched anyway just to be sure he understood what the station was disclaiming How could they put such trash on TV one woman asked Well TV has been putting on trash for years The fact is before these movies were televised people paid good money to see them in theaters That is more than you can say for a lot of the trash on TV The irony is that some of the viewers who are most opposed to the nudity and foul language may be the same people who helped make it possible Pretty much until President Reagan was elected the Federal Communications Commission kept a close eye on broadcasters Shows were not censored of course but licenses came up for renewal every few years and it was a lot easier to challenge the licenses of stations that riled the viewing public Mr Reagan swept into office on a tide of conservative morality promised to get the government off our backs At least in broadcasting he succeeded Now the FCC all Reagan say that the marketplace ought to decide what is acceptable on TV In other words if you like what you see watch it If enough people watch naked actresses the station will get bad ratings and will be forced to put on other programs Then only those with cable will be able to watch these shows According to the FCC the American way Problems collecting child support? Los Angeles Singer Bruce Springsteen won some more glory Wednesday night taking two awards at the fourth annual American Video Awards one for best male performer and the other for best pop video for his song "Glory Sharing the spotlight with "the was comedian and rocker Eddie Murphy who won the best urban contemporary video category for his "Party All the Time" The best female performance went to Aimee Mann of the lower-case Boston quartet 'til tuesday for the video Carry" Ricky Scaggs won the best country music video award for "Country Boy" and Sade won in the category of best new artist Best performance by a duo or group went to Wham! for the video She The group took a second award in the best home video category for a production titled Zbigniew Rybcyznski was honored as best video director for his production of Went for the group I Am Siam is a term used loosely for the awards of the National Academy of Video Arts In fact the third awards ceremony was last April meaning that only seven months passed between shows Why not punchier titles PBS? Actually the show examined the roles that the American and Soviet navies would play in fighting World War III The title was derived from the site where their forces would be likely to meet Mr Othmer said that by improving titles PBS stations could increase ratings by 15 to 20 percent "without changing one word of program he Public Broadcasting Service may have a problem with the titles of its programs Consider three of the offerings shown on public TV this year: of and on the Nature programs right? Wrong was a installment on computers of was a one-man show in the series that featured dancer Bill Irwin on the Feather" was an espionage tale imported from Britain Public television is losing opportunities to attract viewers because of confusing and obscure titles on some of its programs said David Othmer station manager at WHYY-TV in Philadelphia Mr Othmer cited the three examples at the recent PBS Program Fair in Philadelphia and urged representatives of the 314 member stations to improve the naming of programs The station officials met in Philadelphia to preview programs for the PBS prime-time schedule next fall and to discuss public broadcasting issues Mr Othmer and David Liroff station manager at WGBH-TV in Boston want the producers of PBS shows to adopt titles that are shorter punchier and more descriptive of the program content The enormous growth of cable TV has worsened the problem for public broadcasters Many more channels of TV programming are being listed in newspapers and weekly guides The size of popular daily-listing grids is limited so lengthy titles get clipped to fit small spaces Mr Othmer said One of Mr favorite examples of questionable titling is an episode of called Battle for the Norwegian 5 PIECE GROUP SALE!
