One Thing You Cannot Do. Young man, there is one thing you cannot do. You cannot make a success in life unless you work. Oider men than you have tried il and failed You cannot loaf around the street corner, smoke, tell stories and sponge on some one else without making a failure in life. You must learn a trade or gel into some honest business.

If you don't you will become a chronic loafer, and there is no place in the world for loafers. The ripe fruil is al the lop of the iree and you must climb if you gel ii or some smart man will pluck ii from you. Do something no maii-r now small or how low the wages, it will be a starter. Help yourself and oiln'i will help you. There no r.iy.tl road to success; will, grit and endurance are the qualities thai lead io it.

The Home of ciiildiihod There should live in ihe tic pi lis of every human heari one warm and sunny spot where uesilc the images of earthly love and the sweet remembrances of childhood home. The memory of those first impressions made upon the baby's mind and heart will live forever. Oh, how fleeting are the days of childhood Dear mothers, shall you permit yourselves to be so "cumbered about much serving" that the rich garden of your child's soul will lie neglected with foul weeds choking out all worthy and beautiful growth A Happy Man.

The happiest man in the world is ihe poor fellow who earns jusi enough money to pay his debts. Such a man is possessed of the happiness which causes him to whistle and sing as he goes about his work, and when he meets you on the street, a pleas-am smile, speaking louder lhan words, convinces you of his sincerity. The rich man, with a mortgage on every other house in lown and with a bank account, may be happy, but his happiness is not of the heart; neither does it manifest itself as does the true happiness that raJiaies Iron) the countenance of an honest working man. Generosity Keturned With Peace Alier all the talk that has been heard about hard limes, high prices and the dtlhculty of making both ends come anywhere near together, the holiday season has come and ii has been marked wiih what al least looked like a freedom of expenditure more lavish than has been known in any other year since ihe war began. This is hardly to be explained by ihe existence of ii considc-ranlc number of people whom the war has not impoverished, but enriched by those who can justly be called "profile. rs" and those who from Ihe nature of their business necessarily engaged in large operations and honestly made gains in the aggregaie large. Both of these classes put together would not account for the crowds in all ihe stores crowds thai were lo buy as well as to look.

Il would noi be true to say that everybody "has money." Ii is irue.however, losay thai newly acquired habits ol ihrifi have increased the resources of many people who formerly had luile or nothing ahead, and most ol these, apparently, and almost i vei ybo.lv else, have fell justified in ceiebiaiing ihe end of ihe war and the return of peace by buying more Chrisimas presents titan was then wool in other days. Littleton College, Littleton, N. wh.ch carried an advertisement in this paperduring the summer li id the largest fall opening in several years. The institution is spending several thousand dollars on improvements including ihe completion and hea ling ol ihe new science building Pupils may enter now or at any time and pay from date of entrance. A carload of pity is noi worth a handful of help.

Prices range from $3.50 to $1.25 You are cordially invited to inspect the latest offerings. Swift Company buys more than 9000 head of cattle, on an average, every market day. Each one of them is "sized up" by experts. Both the packer's buyer and the commission salesman must judge what amount of meat each animal will yield, and how fine it will be, the grading of the hide, and the quantity and quality of the fat.

Both must know market conditions for live stock and meat throughout the country. The buyer must know where the different qualities, weights, and kinds of cattle can be best marketed as oeef. IT the buyer pays more than the animal is worth, the packer loses money on it If he offers less, another packer, or a phipper or feeder, gets it away from him. If the seller accepts too little, the livestock raiser gets less than he is entitled to. If he holds out for more than it is worth, he fails to make a sale.

A variation of a few cents in the price per hundred pounds is a matter of vital importance to the packer, because it means the difierenco between profit and loss.
