Denpite Speculation '""^9 Romance Fizzles For Matchmakers MONTE CARLO (UPI) - Prince Charles of Britain, the most eligible bachelor in the world, is tall, dark and 22, loves the 8«a and sailing and is devoted to music with a bias towards the classical. Princess Caroline of Monaco one of the most eligible girls in the world, is tall, dark and 16, loves the sea and sailing and is devoted to music with a bias toward the classical. WHATEVER YOU MAY be thinking, the unofficial royal matchmakers have beaten you to it. They seem made for each other, the handsome (better looking than his photos) heir to the throne of Britain and the beautiful daughter of Prince Rainier of Monaco and his lovely former film star wife, Princess Grace. Ever since the spring of 1971 when Princess Grace entered her daughter in a school at Ascot, only a few minutes from Windsor Castle, the speculation has been bubbling. It was helped by the fact the pool of possible queens hasn't seemed to fascinate Charles thus far and that the Princess looks more mature than her years. And remarks, when she was asked her ideal in boys, like "I like tall, dark boys" only bubbled the gossip along. Charles being tall and dark, of course. ALAS FOR THE matchmakers, the trail of romance fizzles out in this pretty principality perched on two hills over the azure Mediterranean. Sources in the pink palazzo of the reigning Grimaldis, where soldiers in picturesque feathered cockades stand guard, point out the obstacles. Religion is a big one. Caroline studies at St. Mary's Convent at Ascot and is a devout Catholic. Charles, of course, will someday be Defender of the Faith—he established protestant Church of England. Thrones have hurdled the religious barrier before but Caroline is young and adamant. Then she has her future planned—more study in France and a career as an interpreter—French, German, Spanish and English are her current languages. The ceremonial restrictions of court life simply do not interest her at the moment. And making everything else academic Grimmy (her school nickname) has never met Prince Charles. Princess Anne spent a few days at the palace as guest of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace, goading the gossips to frenzy. BUT IT WAS just a friendly visit even though it does seem to signal a closed relationship between the two houses. "Why," said Caroline plaintively, "do they try to engage me to someone I haven't even met?" Golesburg Register-Moil, Gdesburg, 111. Thursday, May 10, 1973 17 Spring Specials ift!
